Gen AI pretty much eliminates the need for a lot of junior folks who were responsible for doing the drudge work that can now be performed by an LLM. It doesn't mean there's no demand for tech talent, it's just that the entry bar is higher now. Same goes for the media industry, if your job involved producing garbage content, AI can do it for (nearly) free.

I was a junior programmer at Activision and hit with the layoffs along with other colleagues. And what you say is all fine and good, but this will cause a massive issue as less and less people are needed in most industries that use any form of computing. This means it will be even harder and more competitive for junior positions or people graduating college to find jobs in these industries which may cause a massive unemployment problem in the world. The system isn't sustainable as less and less workers are needed. We need a new system like UBI because at this rate a job will be both a necessity and a luxury that most people won't be able to obtain..

In the limit, i hold opinion ultimately only “researchy” jobs remains. Holding a job will require very high degree of original contribution, such as scientists and mathematicians holding PhDs, such that your work is worthy to train the next gen of AGI, and yeah, “Master AGI” will judge (based on some sort of perplexity measure) whether your idea/work is worthy of employment, or you get fired and go received a UBI. Xbox has released some massive flops - that isn't good for shareholders.
Maybe they should have fired the executives from the studios that couldn't release an anticipated game in a functional state....
Regardless, firing qualified persons drives them to smaller studios to then later be re-acquired by Microsoft, again.

      @NikoKun 8 місяців тому +7

Correct. Whether they admit it or not, these companies are quickly realizing they can significantly downsize their workforce now, thanks to AI. Instead of needing dozens of coders or asset artists, now or very soon, they'll only need a few to do that same workload. And this is a trend that will continue as AI continues to improve. We desperately need policymakers to start proposing ideas for how the average worker is supposed to get by, when AI will out compete half of all workers by the end of the decade. Competition for the jobs that will remain, will be so fierce, everyone will be struggling, and eventually business will slow and stagnate if customers who lost their jobs to AI, no longer have spending money to buy products.

    • @robotquant-app

@@robotquant-app Sure it is. You'd be surprised how advanced AI coding can already get, depending on how you use it. It's certainly surprising me, with the improvements I see every other month. It's not about AI taking over the coding completely, it's about AI significantly lightening the load off a human programmer, in a faster and more interactive way, than a head coder working with a team of humans could ever do. Game development companies can already see this means they can significantly shrink their teams, and many are preparing for how good it will soon be, in just a few months. And it's not just coding either, asset artist teams can also be made a lot smaller now too, by using the generative AI tools that are already being implemented into the editing software they use.

I've got one of those tech jobs (not both) and the salary is indeed insane. However, I do think the work is quite enjoyable. There seems to be a certain amount of pride in working as little as possible but I think in the long run that hurts people who dislike the job but like the money.

And here I thought we were going to be in the cusp of a gaming revolution, how silly of me.
Microsoft ceo: we just merged with Activision Blizzard that set us back $69 billion. We got to do something to recover the costs, how about we lay off some programmers in the video game sector?
Development companies: that sounds like a great idea, by the way, here is a 9 mm, and Will it be the right or the left?
    Microsoft ceo: right or left?
    BANG!
    Ms CEO: OW!!
Development companies: well I heard him say right!
Ms CEO: you shot my foot!
Development companies: no actually you did.

In most of my experience seniors were producing garbage code and working on the Proof on Concepts that didn't make money. Where the juniors were stabilizing forces fixing the bugs in senior code and keeping needed product support running. You're pretty much screwing a lot of the folks who were keeping you paid.
People look down on the 'maintenance' workers but they're the ones who learn the most and have a lot of value.....COUGH. Providing they're doing the work. There were a lot of juniors who didn't contribute a thing feeding like parasites off their peers because they joined the company with the wrong experiences and educations.
Here's hoping the cuts were trimming the fat rather then attacking people who needed those paychecks and deserved them.

Sometimes businesses lay off the most recent hires and it has nothing to do with your work or ethic. When they have to remove a lot of people they can't save all the good ones.
Its heart breaking but I'm sure you folks learned a lot / gained valuable experience working in industry. Maybe some of you can group up with some of your peers, form your own indie groups and work on your own projects.

Expecting the future to resemble the past? Is not a wise idea. Technology convergences have been responsible for the creation and eventual collapse of every social/economic/political system we have created in history. It goes all the way back to Uruk. The convergence of AI and automated platforms is unlike anything we have seen in the past. Its no longer just physical labor being replaced by machines, its cognitive labor as well. Machines that can understand their environment and react to it autonomously are a LOT different from the old blind one armed monsters in factories today.

The interesting thing about most of these layoffs is they all massively hired just to impress VC’s banks, Wall Street and to be able to virtue signal. But as the money dried up the first to go are largely people of color who were hired as virtue signal props rather than on skill levels. LA times laid off a large percentage of their brown, black and Asian employees (granted they were the newest hires) but even their communist loving first daughter Nika Soon Shien who ran the paper into the ground with her ultra leftist wokeness injected into every story showed the only color she cared about was green as did the left leaning executives at Google, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce.

It would be very contraproductive for the people who are rich and own the companies. They are dependent on the human worker to make the money roll.
