Well…………… there texture is a grey thing with a face and the old *leafs* laid on top of it AND a developer said that they would feel like crunchy dry… *leafs*
though before all of this they were just a pig with a tall torso instead of a long one
I mean the creeper hiss I think is from its combustion but it does also kinda sound like leaves rustling and Notch said that the creeper could be coved in leaves

Btw The original creeper was brought into Minecraft on August 31, 2009. Accidentally altering the length and height of a pig, video game programmer Notch reversed the numbers and wound up with a pig was skinny and tall vs. short and fat. He was grey-green and didn't have a name. So yeah the creeper is basically a pig if it was real
