I am surprised how well David's voice sounds while singing live...and the whole performance is so great...What an outrageous band Japan is, not only in that aspect :)
@@badmotorfinger8335 That's funny... I guess they're playing over the recording. The drums really sound live in this video. And at the end, the vocals sound duplicated.
Adolescent Sex must be one of the best first albums ever. Much underrated this band influenced much that followed and remained relatively uncommercial.
We must not forget that they were massive in Japan since 1978. This album sold more than 100 thousand there that year and in 1979 they filled entire arenas in Japan.
One of my favourite songs by Japan. Always had the hots for Dave n Steve. They looked better in the 70's me thinks with those long locks. I'm feeling nostalgic and old!
Agree. Sylvian even wore tight trousers sometimes in 1978! The baggy clothes which followed were such a waste of a great pair of legs. And as '82 approached, he started looking more and more like my eccentric great aunt. 😲
Just an incredible band. I recall CFNY playing the hell out of them when they first came around. And Yeah, he sure did reference a lot of Bowie lyrics throughout his career. I guess he thought of it as homage. Nonetheless the first two albums were right up there with the best of the scene. Which is to say they were as good as Television and nothing less.
This is the Japan I fell in love with. I saw the cover of their first album in the window of our local record shop and bought it on the look. I've just reengaged with it after all these years and fallen back in love with it. It's fab!!
@@kdp8133 I'm the same, played this album so much on Spotify last year. It's a classic. Is there any footage of them actually playing live from this period on UA-cam (this is clearly a mime :) but brilliant all the same)
@@girllionness5944 People are just do fixed on that idea. Japan and Duran Duran are to totally different bands. Ok Nick was so much influenced by Sylvian, maybe a little bit too much. But saying that DD stole Japan's style it's just a bullshit. Back in early 80s DD looked exactly like each new romantic era band....
2bewiz You're welcome. I have the Human League cd Dare too. I wish they (surviving former Japan members especially David) themselves wouldn't put down their glam funk days. I love some of the songs from their pre-Quiet Life days as well especially this one.
ooo he is playing guitar. I kinda love this early and different style of Japan; Honestly agree with Sylvian on how it doesn’t have as much value and quality as their later stuff though.
I love when singers that aren’t known for playing guitar can actually play guitar… DS with LP Custom here is a natural, you can tell he grew up playing unlike other front men that wear a guitar look silly and uncoordinated.

man!!!! fantastic - such happy memories.... I was gutted when Japan went all weird and stopped rocking - they would have been bigger than all the 80s metal rubbish
It's great getting to see Rob Dean get to be a bit of a rock/guitar god for a change. I love the musical direction Japan went in, but I also like their earlier stuff.
Rob Dean also plays on it. Numan was supposed to work with the entire band Japan but it didn't happen. I didn't mean for Dance but for something else. wonderful, wonderful...why did they stop this look and sound? they could have been massive in the 80s????? I adopted it at the time and thought I was the mutt's nutz!
hugobear1 Well it might be that outside mainly Japan (the country) it wasn't working as well as can be for them. Plus they were very young, their tastes were changing and so was the musical landscape. They were massive in the 80's and split at their peak of popularity so could've got even bigger maybe, but yes it looks like Hanoi Rocks were inspired by is look of theirs

Dead my ass!
The best and most accomplished band for their age ever.
I think Japan's problem was timing. They came with Glam too late, and with New Romantic/Electronic too early.
Lol they literally switched just after 2 albums that came out in the same year.
Yeah way too late for glam and essentially was proto New Romantic ...then left before they were nabbed as scenesters

初期のJAPAN 最高
Cool vid deffo a live lead vocal to the backing track going on here though these guys were excellent live.
CLASSIC. I got into japan about 1983
Here are the lyrics:
With the sidewalks trading love
As subway lights grow brighter
We're just another hype
But the pressure's getting harder
(Get up, get up, get up take it much higher)
All lover's etiquette
Make love on first impression
And adolescent sex with juvenile intentions
(Get up, get up, get up take it much higher)
Whatever gets you through the night
Just keep on dancing
Whatever gets you through the night
Just keep on dancing babe
Well the lady buys a thrill
Excitement in succession
But a heartache won't partake
In articulate obsession
Well pretty things at rest
No courtesy surprising
For love is heaven blessed
All catastrophes denying
(get up, get up, get up take it much higher)
Whatever gets you through the night
Just keep on dancing
Whatever gets you through the night
Just keep on dancing babe
Well you're out on the street
With your lover's infections
Count impossibilities by limination
And your body still damp
From your one-room apartment
And your heartache reminds me
Love's ?? any doubt
You submerge again, emerge again
Just get out the strain
'love is not the antidote'
I think is the line you are missing in the last verse?
"just get out the strain" i literally have always thought he was saying "just get off the street" i can't believe i've been singing it wrong this whole time omg...

1978, I was 14, in to the Jam The Police, Specials et al and dismissed Japan as 'pretty boys' - how wrong I was.
I think they're deeply embarrassed by this now , but I love it.

Rather rough cacophony than music at the beginning, but the boys would have grown up very soon. Pure talent.

@ztcatchy The first comment on this video - well done & THANKS!
So Japan was more glam rock-ish in the beginning before they moved into the more sobre moody sound new-romantic look...
Rob Dean was just as good at posing and looking cool as the rest of them, Sylvian was a total tit for booting him out!
Oh jeez, this is fabulous. :D

Glad you are amazed ! 😊
The 'whatever gets you through the night' bit is very similar to Lennon's 1974 single. So, Bowie fans, Roxy fans AND Lennon fans, eh?
There's a pic out there in internet-land of John Lennon on a sail boat, wearing a Japan t-shirt.

Not a crime for both bands to be influenced by Bowie. This is very Duran tho to be fair
Japan came out first though.
what I meant was that Duran likely copied Japan. my original comment wasn't clear
+parallelsuns1 So Lou Reed and Bryan Ferry, then?
+parallelsuns1 oh yes, I'm sorry that I didn't understand it :) I would agree with that by the way
Ferry vocals are good, the Eno connection. I never got into Lou Reed so I cant comment on that
@2bewiz sounds perfect :)
Duran imitated then a lot
Indeed !
Why didn't he just continue to use this voice instead of trying to be a ferry wannabe?
Too much strain to his vocal chords
