He wrote this song shortly after his dad passed and around the same time the 9/11 attacks happened. It was a song to honor his father and also the attacks happened and he worked that into the song. This song is an anthem.

I tried to tell my daughter this years ago, that she may never have the chance to travel like this again. I understood the constant moving and making new friends every 3-4 years and tried to make it as easy as possible. She finally came around in her mid teens. She now has a son, has to do adult things and told me a few months ago she misses the change of scenery. lol

    I'm a military veteran.
And as I swore an oath to serve, no flag can or should ever fly higher than Old Glory. Those who intentionally disrespect the flag are disrespecting the ideals we were founded on -- not the flaws and scars we have. Things can always be better, and only by living in America do we have the opportunity to make this nation what it ought to be.
Because at the end of the day, we don't have liberty, we ain't got anything worth fighting for and preserving for future generations.

I did it for my family, for my buddies, for my country (of course!), and for freedom for all of us. The current gov't sucks! The U.S. has a LOT of corruption at high level. It's disappointing and sad. BUT! There are a LOT of good people, it's a GREAT country overall, and we became the "leaders". Not so much bc we wanted to, but bc we HAD to! • @jonandkristen

I just saw an article today on our local news that makes this song just hit so different, and makes his loss that much more hard in this area.
I personally grew up in Indiana and being a military brat (Army) and then myself serving (Marine Corps), I moved around some and only started calling Kansas home in 2013 when I received a job offer as soon as I EASed.
Well, during the invasion of Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a US Soldier from the town we now call was captured and became a POW. Valley Center, KS is a small suburb just about 10-15 minutes north of Wichita, KS. This soldier would sing this song to the Iraqi guards to both annoy them and to keep up his own morale.
This soldier would eventually make it home and as a thank you for his service and a tribute for the pain he had suffered, the entire town threw a parade for him . Unknown to the Soldier at the time, Toby Keith had heard about the story and had arranged with the town to not only show to shake his hand, but also put on a small concert for him where the Soldier sang along with Toby Keith on stage to this song.
Valley Center, even with its growth today, still has a population of under 8,000 people - and back them probably closer to 5k-6k. It just blew my mind and really shows the type of people in the community but also, and very importantly, the kind of person Tony Keith was.

As a Retired Marine I loved this man for everything he did for us Veterans and active duty members. As a man in his 50s fighting cancer now... there are no words to express how I truly feel about his loss. This song and a few others of his have all been anthems of sorts for me at different points in my life. This song and this performance is one that carries meaning and helps me keep fighting.

OEF veteran 2004-2005. Toby Keith was base hopping in a Blackhawk. Happened to escort a convoy to an armored cav base when he arrived. They played for us for about an hour, shook as many hands as he could and got back on the helicopter. RIP to a man who took the time out of his career to play for the troops. He will always hold a place in my heart.

Thank you for the great reaction Lilly Jane! As a 22-year Army vet, this song and your reaction brought a smile to my face and warmed my heart. I remember what an Australian Army officer told me once. He said: "The American soldier has brought more freedom to the world than any other force in history." You're right, we're not a perfect country, Lord knows we have our faults, but I truly believe that we're working hard to overcome them. Keep up the great work!

People forget that as much as they may hate the government, the flag isn't theirs, it's ours. It's not their country. It's ours. The whole reason you can stand up and wave your *insert any other flag here* is because of that red white and blue. RIP Toby Keith and Semper Fi to all my Marine brothers and sisters out there.Long may she wave.

OEF/OIF Veteran Toby Keith will definitely be missed by many! His patriotic songs always seemed to make you feel better even if just for a little while. I can't speak for every veteran, but when I see people do reactions to patriotic songs and react at certain times and moments the way you did it shows that even though you feel one way about the government you still love this country! It was an honor to serve this country! If my body didn't give out I would still be serving!
