  • In this tutorial I go over how to make space in your beat for the vocal to cut through the mix. This will help your vocals sound more clear and upfront. You can use this technique in Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton, Reason, Studio One, Cubase, FL Studio, or any other DAW. All you need is an EQ plugin.

    can you make an example on how to create space like this for a lead vocal when you're dealing with a 1 or 2 track wav file instrumental that you don't have the stems for when recording a rap song?

    Hi Jerry thanks for your tutorials always helpful. If you take requests for tutorials then I have a one for you as the last few are vocals this too is vocal related. Can you do a tutorial for vocoding and vocal chops? Using stock plugins and your preferred 3rd party plugins. Many thanks and kutgw

    Thanks! Great info, and awesome teaching style! A question I have is would this work if the beat is already mixed and purchased in a wav form?

      Yeah it would work, but you’d definitely want to be much more subtle with it because it can begin to take away too much of the beat quickly.

    Is it better doing this or using trackspacer ? Or do both ?

      Trackspacer is definitely more precise

    Is it ok to do this on the buss as well as eq on master track

    • @mixwithjerry
      @mixwithjerry  2 роки тому +2

      I wouldn’t make an eq cut like this on the master because it will be affecting the vocal along with the music and the drums. It’s okay to do this on the buss and then do final touch ups with your eq on the master (like adding some high end or boosting some lows) for tonal balance.

      Dude you arent getting the logic of it! If its "space for vocals" then you take energy out of the beat! Cutting on master ld logically down the voice too. The F6 EQ is really a nice tool. If you want to put it on the master theres an overall Mix preset that you can add so it sounds cleaner and you can turn it louder. Also you can sidechain (that dont work for me as I use Garageband) your 808 for a bump. Also I use it without sidechaining cause it just transforms the sound with less energy.

    A better description for your "music" bus would be a "midline" bus then into your tonal bus which is your whole mix without parallel fx . Then into your pre master w your parallel fx then your master

    • @mixwithjerry

      Yeah you can really build your busses to have as much control as you need. I don’t really do any group processing to the parallel fx, or the drum and tonal busses together. I can see though how that would help with organization and if any small changes need to be made at each level.

      @@mixwithjerry indeed, not to mention how unpredictable the algorithm is when you sum your sound. You could be hitting -7 LUFS on your stereo out, then as you sum them into their busses it changes your loudness level . Which in turn throws the whole spectral balance off of your mix when you didn't sum.
      If you are really new, it happens so suddenly. (prob while your ears are already exhausted) you don't notice till you listen in the morning and your like " why does it sound so bad now ? " my opinion , sometimes instead of going for the eq first, match the spectral balance and loudness of the vocal and the beat, then saturate the vocal into the sound your working with . I use spectre! And I grab eq's probably half as much as I used to
