It is difficult to praise this snippet of Aida enough. Celeste Aida is often sung in a way that leaves the listener completely untouched. Not so here. Mr. Calleja has a voice that is second to none and he uses it with such refinement that it is a blessing. The orchestra plays beautifully (love the oboe) with exactly the right volume. I am happy that Decca can continue to make such super-high quality productions.
One of the very few tenors on the opera circuit currently who has a beautiful lyrical expression to his voice and intelligent use of phrasing and timing instead of just resorting to desperate sounding shrieking or vocal gymnastics.
Live this is probably the most difficult tenor Aria. Calleja, he does have a nice voice, good tone, I just find his "Caprino" a little too much at times.
lolliemoon8, yes as in Goat. Franco Corelli had it early in his career, he corrected it later. Lauri Volpi, it was very noticeable earlier. Some actually like this type of thing, it was seen in a number of tenors say a hundred years ago. Today, I hear it a lot in the tenor di grazia singers. I just think it gets in the way of CAlleja's sound, which is quite a good sound.
Wonderful voice. The girl in the silly dress isn’t necessary!! A tone-deaf guy, Murat somebody, posted “out of tune” which says he’s jealous. Thx 4 posting..
I think Joseph Calleja has a more "golden", more colorful and more beautiful and captivating timbre in the high registers than Mario Lanza, especially in the legato.
As usual, Mr Calleja is singing with a very steady secure technique, the voice has beautiful colors, and it is a great pleasure to listen to such a sane and generous voice ... especially after we had to endure yesterday evening the catastrophic shameful inacceptable performance of Mr Antonenko who had been a shame for his partners, Verdi, and the audience ... listening to this is like showering after a marathon of horror (must have been awful for the new legends in the roles Netrebko and Rachvelishvili who had to make their way out of this disastrous partner) ... It is just incredible that the Met Management has not been aware and did not find for a replacement .... BUT 2 questions about this recording though : due to the fact that this is a studio recording : HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO KEEP THE PROBLEMATIC attack on the Bflat forte at 3.53 ???... and on the other hand ... one has the feeling that the final Bflat diminuendo has much to do with the engineers skills that he has to do with Mr Calleja's technique .... I would be very curious about any live performance check if he really ha the ability to manage such a perfect effect ... next question : this is definitely beautiful, but I am not sure if Mr Calleja could assume the entire role on stage ?.... did he do it yet on stage ?....
What a great comment!!! this comment has to get reactions. i totally agree with you....i am sure that the last crescendo is maden by the sound systems...i assume they just reduced the volume and did the crescendo possibilities by the apps......to my opinion Corelli could do it perfectly and after that today JK AND PiotrB.... but both Jonas K and Piotr B are not like Corelli's! its too difficult job to do and need absolute and perfect breath control.... Calleja is one of the best lyric tenors today ....i have heard him live in Lucia Di La.... yesterday in Deutsche oper in Berlin however he catched a cold but still very good with enough volume and less probs. I really dont know what happened to the new generation of the audiences today but i am sure so many things are engaged to make a singer as a superstar!!!!!!! Addio golden age of opera!!!
great! I took part in at least 100 prformances of Aida! Really great singing! Just about video - the lady in the frame is too openly naked for such exalted music. looks vulgar, besides - Aida was a black Ethiopian
Caitlin Maher ...simply type in Jonathan Antoine on UA-cam he has had tens of millions of views already, his BGT audition video with his friend Charlotte has had something like 80 million hits and counting. He did 2 album's with her as a duo and now has 2 classical number 1 album's to his own name Tenore recorded when he was just 19 and Believe when he was still only 21, I'm quite surprised you've not stumbled across him well now is your chance trust me "once heard never forgotten".
Great Tenor, happy birthday Joseph Calleja
A golden tenor. His color is his greatest gift.
Bravissimo Joseph ❤️Your Radames is amazing 👏👏👏👏. Your B flat “acuto” is perfectly intoned, dying, as written by the Maesto Giuseppe Verdi ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Very nicely put.

Caprino as in Goat? Surely not?I am told I have the hearing of a bat! What would you call yourself?

You sir, do not know nothing about operatic singing. nonsense.
Why compare to Lanza? He was one of the best of his time.
isso sim é bonito de ver
Mind blowing!!!Viva Calleja!!!Viva Villazon!!!
Next Lanza, the best I have heard yet. xx
Hűha!!!
RRREEMEK!

@@giampierone010 certo!
Celeste Aida is a little bit heavy for his voice……..Attention!
Wow the last diminuendo~~! In the league with Franco Corelli
The sound is attractive and the interpretation properly nuanced. However, Calleja is on the wrong track. This particular rep is not for him.
Terrific singing, asinine video. How old is that girl, anyway? 16? Doesn't look much like Egypt!

No!
Mi viene da vomitare ascoltandolo.
Concordo
Joseph excellent......girl in video wearing see-through dress disgusting!!!
Love this guy. Most authentic Italian Tenor sound in today's Opera world... in my ears' opinion. :)
Caitlin Maher ...I totally agree, although if Jonathan Antoine ever gets interested in the opera circles he'll take it to new heights!
I do not know who Jonathan Antoine is. So can you explain?
