While I think this is a good idea, I don't see why almost nobody uses separate preamps and poweramps. That is even more versatile as one could mix and match preamps and poweramps from different companies. For instance, one could use a 6505 preamp for distortion and a fender preamp for cleans. very cool review. i've been looking at these since the fellows at URM showed one being put to good use using the knockoff hiwatt (the cwatt i think) module in a meshuggah song, mixed with (real) recto, engl, marshall, and it sounded pretty terrific. gave it that gritty nasty sound that just blended perfectly with the high end tone of the 'real' amps. i will say that this one sounded nothing like a plexi, and to my ears didn't sound like a tube amp, but more like a really good modern solid state modeler. i'm thinking similar to a blackstar or something comparable. which certainly isn't a bad sound if you're blending it with tube amps, but seems to fall short on it's own. too compressed, not spikey enough on the waveform! i definitely love the idea of interchangeable modules though. and have looked at the older randall amp head that holds 3 modules, and the rack unit that holds 4. especially since all the newer brand modules are interchangeable. i have no idea how they sound in comparison to the synergy. never used either. Hi Glen. I have some questions for you on the synergy amps. What's the benefit on having two preamp slots, instead of just the one slot and a built in clean channel like on the syn-30 head and combo? Have you ever tried the clean channel syn-30's?
This isn’t billed as a “fearless gear review.” Should I take it to mean you actually like it that much, or are you keen to avoid pissing off the manufacturer?
This is like Glenn's video about musicians bringing crappy gear in to record, "I'm using it on the record because I paid for it", except the engineer version, "I'm using it in the studio because I paid for it and need to pretend I like it so I can feel good about my poor purchase decision." lol (Actually I think it sounds decent.)
Hey glenn, Me and my guitar teacher keep having this argument about miking the drum kit in the school auditorium. It’s medium sized. Do you think it is a good idea to mike it?
Really depends on what style of music you are playing. If its rock or metal then definately, but for jazz and bands where the drums dont need to be on top of the mix then no. It also really depends on how good of a PA they have, if its modern with subwoofers and they have enough channels I would ask. However, I've encountered some school PAs that can barely handle a vocalist balanced with the amps and drums from the stage. You dont want your drums going through that.
Greetings from Germany/China, one quick question if I may, would a dark glass alpha omega pedal paired with a g&k 2•10 combo work for recording in a studio? Just found your channel BTW, and I, oh so truly, do, dig half of your content. But, let’s face it, guitars are for princesses.
Glenn, love the channel, lots of great stuff. Quick question if you have a minute: I'm a drummer (at least it ain't bass) about to go into the studio for the first time with some people who have been exposed to recording many times before. (So they say.) I've been busting my ass, learning our songs front to back, playing with a click, etc. but it's feeling a bit overwhelming. Apparently I'm expected to, without any accompanying music, be able to play complete songs from memory doing nothing but counting measures? I'm no George Kolias but I perform solidly live, is this all or nothing approach normal? An empty track with nothing but a click feels so damn sterile, is this really how "the pros" lay down drum tracks? Thanks man. Love and respect from the Midwest!
Cool concept, Plexi sounds nothing like a plexi though...saw a demo with this with the Engl Savage module too that Ola did, didn't sound like a Savage either. Lots of cool tones conceptually, but think they missed the mark with the modeling aspects of sounding like the actual amps they're modeling. The Soldano one sounds great though.
Its not a DSP, its an honest module made of tubes, transistors, and passives. Thus, you cannot call it a modeling amp. Failed clone perhaps, but not a modeler. If it fails to sound like a plexi ( not too surprising since its partly a result of overloading specific tubes and transformers in the plexi ) the question then is .. does it sound good?
you should add plexi to the title of the video if you are going to be doing a series on different ones having the name of the module would make things a lot easier
lots of tube amps have midi in/out for a while now. especially on the footswitches. but some have memory presets that use them too like the Diesel Herbert, hues & kettner Coreblade, Carvin V3, etc...
Glenn: make a video Joyo klon vs. Synergy comparing the amps in common that you have at your disposal. that would be a nice analog vs. analog battle. and use 6l6 in all of them... we must compare apples with apples. keep with the good work.
How safe is the storage of the module's? With those delicate looking pins at the back i can imagine it's a hassel or do you get some cases with it/for it?
Don't see why not. we could see the analog-ness of the individual modules when he pulled them out. it'd be pretty easy to change a capacitor here or there or similar items no?
That was an interesting demo at the end, a little more on the rock spectrum. I liked it.
yeah, just a little different from normal

No. One or the other. But, you could record 2 sets & blend that way
you should add plexi to the title of the video if you are going to be doing a series on different ones having the name of the module would make things a lot easier
Great! Frikkin awesome vid! Are there any modules like the Vox AC30 ... Thats more sound like i taste
yes, there are. a few to choose from if memory serves. especially if you look at different brands.
Great tone, cool song !
Wait, why would one need a MIDI input in Tube Amp?
Channel switching from looper.
Switching amp modules seems reasonable in a A/B configuration :)
Ok, that explains everything. Thanks!
lots of tube amps have midi in/out for a while now. especially on the footswitches. but some have memory presets that use them too like the Diesel Herbert, hues & kettner Coreblade, Carvin V3, etc...
4:15 sounds awesome it reminds me of Opeth Songs
This thing is some goddamn black magic!!
They come in a foam lined box
All it needs now is a Mesa and orange preamps and I’d justify buying one
That sounds sick.
this is... amazing!
I almost bought a modular Egnater back in the day.
I wonder if these can be modded like the Randall MTS'?
Don't see why not. we could see the analog-ness of the individual modules when he pulled them out. it'd be pretty easy to change a capacitor here or there or similar items no?
