    Every cast iron pan, whether Lodge or another brand, deserves proper care. How to season them is one of those significant things we need to do after every use. Remember, a well-maintained skillet ensures delicious meals for years to come. Let's make sure yours stays in top shape!

    After cleaning out my CI pans with warm water, there is usually enough animal fat left inside that collects on the rag I dry the pans with. This is enough to spread over the exposed areas on the bottom that wear off from the heat. As long as the whole pan looks black, I know it is well coated and ready for use again.

    I have been cooking with a lodge 12 in. Skillet since Christmas. I have a glass top stove, so I haven’t tried oiling the outside of the skillet. Would the maintenance oil on the outside just burn onto my glass top? How would that affect my glass stove top?

    i do after i oven dry it for an hour so that way the pores of the item are opened and subject to accepting the oil better. i do the dry stage in a 250 degree oven after i remove most of the water from the cast iron with a towel

    Thanks Mike. Good video. I always put a thin layer of oil on the outside. Say hello to Mrs Cast Iron.

    I start out oiling the inside and outside of the pan. After I have cooked in the pan a few times, I occasionally oil the outside, not every time. It depends on the condition of the outside. If I feel the pan needs it, I will oil it and put it back on the heat.

      Same for me, occasionally wipe the outside down and when I do it’s usually with the paper towel I was wiping the inside with and just give it quick all over wipe. Obviously if I see something like seasoning wearing thin I would give it more love. 😜

  • @krazmokramer

    Of course I do. The oil is already on the paper towel from wiping down the excess oil on the inside. No sense in wasting it. So I wipe down the entire skillet. Otherwise, that expensive avocado oil goes into the trash with the paper towel.

    • @MrCastIron
      @MrCastIron  7 місяців тому +2

      Yes indeed!! Might as well make good use of it right!? How do you like using avocado oil?

    • @krazmokramer
      @krazmokramer 7 місяців тому

      @@MrCastIron I like avocado oil for cooking and for cast iron seasoning/maintenance. Avocado oil is healthier than olive oil. I tried flax seed oil when it was popular a few years ago. Flaked, peeled and stunk like fish. Cleaned the one pan I used it on and started fresh with avocado oil because that's what I had to cook with. Works well and looks great, too! Absolutely no cracking, peeling or flaking. And no stink! Since I don't eat pork, lard was never an option for me.

      Maybe where you live makes a difference. I seldom oil the bottom of my skillets. After watching this video I looked at
      At them and only one had very slight rust, the rest had none. There's not much humidity here.

    • @krazmokramer
      @krazmokramer 4 місяці тому

      @@dougwebster8868 Whatever works for you. I prefer no rust to "very slight rust", but that's what works for me. The other advantage of seasoning the outside and the inside is that it forms a complete shield. Like a wrap of the skillet. This aids in cleanup if you have something boil over or dribble down the side of the skillet and get baked on. Again, that's what works FOR ME.

    I have a few frying pans that look like they were seasoned heavy on the outside and not so much in the inside. They still work but some are ugly. I usually do not do the outside unless it looks like it needs it. But that is just me. Thank you for the video, Mike. Stay safe and stay warm

    Can i use any oil ie olive oil? Also when you oil the outside of the pan can u use it on the stove? (Open flame) or only in oven?

    • @Grizzly907LA
      @Grizzly907LA 6 місяців тому

      Olive oil has a low burn point, meaning the oil will burn at higher temperatures. You need to use a high temperature oil like peanut or canola oil. You can also use bacon grease, or any animal fat.

    It seems to me that the extra tiny bit of maintenance will go a long way. Way cheaper to maintain than repair.

    Doesn't the oil on the outside just burn?

    • @MrCastIron
      @MrCastIron  7 місяців тому +1

      Well, kinda, but not really, lol! It does thin down by the heat, so that’s another reason to add a thin layer every time.

    Wait a min. Am I supposed to oil my CI? I thought that the rust in the pan is what gave me the Iron that I needed in my diet! Just joking as usual. Yes I do the inside when I clean them and only do the outside if I use them heavy. Nice video Mike.
