I bet people have already told you this, but when you talk about the HDMI-extension at 2.45, the actual purpose of it is for wall mounted TVs. Some TVs has the HDMI-inputs facing backwards (not down or sideways) making the adapter itself impossible to fit, as it would otherwise demand a hole in the wall (which is not so practical).
The reason behind Microsoft provides a HDMI extension instead an USB is because your HDMI port may not have clearance enough for the adapter but with the use of a HDMI extension you can conveniently plug into any port of your TV
The reason why the HDMI plug can be extended is quite simple; many tv's are mounted on a wall and do not have no HDMI ports on either side, but rather have one to three ports on their backside. You have that alot with smaller displays (like 22'' tv's). so it will fit between the tv/ screen and the wall mount
the HDMI extension is definitely not for other people to add a cable to it it would have to have female to female for that all it does is extend it another five inches and make it more flexible for HDMI spots in hard-to-reach places
Excellent video. Quick question: my wireless adapter is very choppy with my surface 3. Videos, inteeacrive whiteboards, really every thing. Ive got excellent wifi and lots of bandwidth and the surface 3 is brand new. any idea why?
Alex Duong yes. It is a brand new surface 3 with windows 10 installed. Mirroring using my note 3 works well. Its just the surface 3 that is extremely choppy.
The reason for the HDMI extension is specifically because in some TVs the HDMI connector faces back from the TV, and for TVs that are wallmounted very close to the wall, you wont be able to attach the adapter because the space is too small. With the HDMI extension cable, you can attach the adapter but have it hang instead of sticking straight back into the wall, allowing you to connect it
hi alex. thanks for reviewing! does this work with windows 7? does it lag badly when playing movies from a hard drive? is the sound coming from your tv or your device? thinking about buying one because I'm lazy and I won't have to get up to plug my laptop in anymore lol. please reply
The reason why they provided an HDMI extension instead of USB is because the USB is meant to carry power to the wireless receiver. Some cheap extension usb cables may not do this.
Pleaaase can you answer me this question: What happens when you turn your surface pro 3 90 degrees? I am thinking of using a surface (pro) 3, a data projector and the wireless display adapter to be able to move around the room and add notes to the screen for presentation (or rather classroom) purposes. However, when you are holding the surface tablet in one hand for a prolonged period of time, it's a good idea to NOT hold it horizontally (landscape mode). So... what happens on the big screen if I turn the tablet? Will I get a more narrow picture on the big screen? I'm thinking that this is what has to happen. However, that would... suck.
Can you turn off your surface display while watching a movie on your tv? Or your surface display has to be also on ? In other words can you project second screen only ? Thanks !
Do you know if there is a way to link multiple computers to this? Sometimes we want to play things from my computer or from my husbands and it would be a pain to have to re pair everytime
You can link one at a time but you won't be able to use both at the same time. Once you have one turned off you can turn on the other device. Hopefully that makes sense.
Hi Orlando, you only need to press the button once to pair with the device you're using it with. i.e. Surface Pros or Windows Devices and the next time you turn on the tv it'll be ready to connect. Your devices do not need to be on WiFi at all to connect to one another as the Wireless Display Adapter has built in WiFi direct. You won't be able to connect to the internet with it, but you'll be able to connect your Windows devices to it just fine.
Alex, I am interested in buying this adapter to remove the HDMI-cable I now have connected between my HTPC and TV in my living room. Would this adapter work with this setup, i.e, one PC connected to my TV as only monitor, or would I also need a second monitor? Cheers, Martin
Hi Martin I'm a little confused about your question. If I'm understanding correctly you want to connect the PC wireless to just the tv? If so, yes you can do that, however keep in mind if your tv will not display anything until you activate the sync on your PC everyone you turn your PC on. Also, being that it is a wireless device it does go out of sync every once in a while forcing you to resync with a monitor physically connected first...to see what you're doing. I do not recommend using this adapter the way you intend and I can't think of another device that can guarantee 100% wireless PC connectivity to tv at this time. Hope this answers your question.
Hi again. If I understand you correctly, I would need to activate the Wireless Display Adapter sync every time I would turn on the computer, for which I would need a monitor physically connected first? If this is the case I would need to find an alternative solution since I want to avoid a second screen. Thanks, Martin
Martin Lagerblad Yes you would still have to hit the Connect icon on your PC everytime you turn your PC on. The only way is to never turn off your PC after its synced, but restarting your PC or logging off would require you to reconnect. Unless you can operate your computer without a screen, I wouldn't recommend using it that way
I have a Windows RT and when I click on the device option. I can't add the device; it doesn't recognize the adapter. I have also tried a desktop and laptop with the same problem. Is there a step I am missing?
The small print on the MS Wireless Adapter says it doesn't support RT. I assume you have a Surface. www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-ca/p/wireless-display-adapter#details System Requirements Computer/Operating System All Miracast® enabled Windows 8.1 tablets/laptops/phones and Android devices with 4.2.1 and later. okay so since my samsung tv is 8 years old I only have 2 HDMI inputs, does that mean I have to use the extension to connect both HDMI together to use this?
No the extension is only if you have something blocking your adapter from connecting to the hdmi. If you don't have enough HDMI ports available you may want to look into an HDMI splitter. If you're just missing a usb port on your tv to power this adapter you will need a usb extension cable plugging one end to the adapter and the other end to a usb wall ac plug
Alex Duong Hey nice informative video. Quick question. I have a Note 4 and a Samsung TV but its not a smart TV. I use a app to watch movies on my phone, if I buy this device will I be able to watch the movies off my phone from the app onto the TV?
i have a 18mbs download but this device doesnt use your internet. It has built in direct wifi. The speed of your internet only affects what you are streaming to your laptop, not what your laptop is streaming to the wireless display adapter.
Hi, sorry to dig this up, but i know of this device just recently. So here my question : did you tried to pair this with an android smartphone? If yes, how was it ( delay, stability, ...). If no, can you do another video please!
Hi Silver, thanks for watching. I did pair with my android phone, a Samsung Note 3 and it works great music and movie. Stuttering on the phone happens at the beginning 5-10 minutes of videos and you will see a horizontal line here and there during a video but it does not happen often. Hope that helps.
rajesh kumar It does not appear so. I am sure there are other ways to make it work on windows 7 depending on your display adapter built into the computer. This following is from Microsoft's tech sheet for this device: Supported Platforms - X86, X64 and ARM, with Windows 8.1+ operating system
Great vid Alex! After watching it, I was able to set mine up in a couple of minutes. I have it linked with Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 and have gotten great results. Keep up with sharing your great reviews!
Hi, great video. I have a question, does the adapter connects directly to the device (laptop/tablet/phone) or does it need a wifi connection? Thank you very much :)
Alex Duong Reason for the HDMI extension VS USB is that the device it's self is in line with the Male HDMI connector - it is therefore useful to use an extension for very crowded ports or if you are wall mounting the TV and therefore the stick would get in the way! - Other than that, good review!
The other reason (this is common to Chromecast and Amazon Fire sticks etc) is that the WiFi reception of the device can be slightly effected by close proximity to the TV/Screen. Having that slight separation can improve the reception considerably.
I can't believe people have asked why a HDMI extension than a USB extension cable? It's so obvious... just look at the back of your TV... the dongl would stick out.. or block other ports. doh!
heres the real question??? have you tried actually playing that game???? and when your car is crashing into a barrier your tv is still in the race... LOL
Hi Bryan, I have played the game and other games many times without issue. While there may be times the screen freezes, a disconnect/reconnect of the software will fix it.
. Shitty review. I have not experienced any stuttering issues but my device is always close to the adapter while streaming. Five minutes of a movie wouldnt annoy anybody if you either a) highlight to what time to scroll to jump over it - OR - b) you edit/move that part of the video to the end of your review as a "plus" to show people an actual, prolonged performance test. In the second case you could just say "see you soon" and tell people they can stop the video if they're not interested in the five minutes test that is going to start. My 2 cents. The HDMI extension is so you can plug the device in on TVs that might have their HDMI ports in a tight space
I wondered why he couldn't see that. I thought he gave a rather strange explanation for that pigtail cord ;)

Is it possible to setup your adapter and pc so that you can use a monitor wirelessly?

can you connect this adapter to desk top PC, for mirror surface pro screen on desk top PC, without need a wireless connection. Thanks
I can't confirm that since I don't have a pic with hdmi
Thanks you
+Gonzalo Ramirez Yes, you only need an HDMI input.
can you connect one source to mutiple wireless display adapters at once?
Thanks for watching! That would not be possible unfortunately
Great vid Alex! After watching it, I was able to set mine up in a couple of minutes. I have it linked with Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 and have gotten great results. Keep up with sharing your great reviews!
hey thanks Lucas, it's great to hear you're liking it! stay tuned for more reviews of various tech gadgets!
Hi, great video. I have a question, does the adapter connects directly to the device (laptop/tablet/phone) or does it need a wifi connection? Thank you very much :)
connects directly
+Alex Duong (morphalex) thanks a lot!
will this work well with lcd monitor to computer tower system
You have a smart tv right? Could I use this without a smart tv?
You can and no I don't have a smart tv
Alex Duong That is awesome!!
does it need to connect to your wifi or does it make its own
HE said he can connect it to his laptop without connecting anything to the internet.
Can it be used with Android phones?
how can I tell which monitors are supported?
if you have an hdmi port it's supported
Nice video does it work the surface pro 2
It works with all surface pro devices, thank you. Please subscribe to my channel, more and better video reviews to come!
how much dose it coast ?
Slightly bizarre reasoning as to why HDMI and not USB extension, but good review otherwise, and thank you :) God bless you.
Thank you unlokia, I agree a USB extension would be easier and cheaper.

Yessir
can use without net connection
Is ti just for surface?
In the video he said he used it with his laptop.
it will work with macbook pro?
I do not believe so as it does not have miracast technology
it looks like that it doesnt work so smooth,or is it just me?
Can i contact it to iPhone
I cant get any picture just sound, please and weed back.
Hey Mark I'll definitely get that made as well, make sure to subscribe to keep up with my videos!
so u can only use this with Microsoft not with apple products
you can use it with Android or Microsoft devices that support Miracast technology. apple doesn't support that
hi how to connect with my Samsung Galaxy tablet ?
That's on the purchase list for when I get a surface.
Thanks for great review. I hope it will be great if xbox 360 and ps3 too. because my all hdmi port are full
Windows 10?
Useful review.
antti202 Thank you antti202, please take a look at my other reviews and subscribe!
I think this little machine thats very good , because the time that delay its just about 0.02 sec or something
I can't believe people have asked why a HDMI extension than a USB extension cable?
It's so obvious... just look at the back of your TV... the dongl would stick out.. or block other ports. doh!
Dang it, my TVs don't have a USB port so it won't work for me
u do realize there's auto-focus function on camera..!?
Actually, no I have a DSLR with a manual lens so no I don't. Thanks...and I prefer it that way
don't worry about my other comment, I wasn't up to the part were he says that it doesn't.
heres the real question??? have you tried actually playing that game???? and when your car is crashing into a barrier your tv is still in the race... LOL
