Well done Alexander. Howard's story is an important one in his general area by all accounts. You did a fantastic job and I'm sure his friends and family will be glad to have this video in the future.
Take away the background music, hard to hear the gentleman.
Mostly what I had a hard time with was background noise something like air sound. The music was fine for me and like when utube channels use music in the background!
People who produce this stuff have a poor taste in music.
Make a car purring
It might be his music.
His stereo is right there.
I turned on the closed caption
My mother's cousin worked for the Rolls Royce factory in Springfield, MA in the 1920's. I remember him saying that they would test the engines for vibrations by placing a glass of water on top of it and looking at the ripples created by the running engine. They would calibrate the engine until there were no ripples left. Crude yet effective!
I recall a TV ad, when I was a child back in the 60s, showing a glass of water on the hood of a car that was on a machine the car would drive on without actually going anywhere. As you mentioned, it was to show the low vibration as there was just a slight ripple in the water. I don't recall which make of car it was for.
What a perfect way to calibrate. Thanks for sharing this story.
That’s how they tuned the Tanks in Ww two
Boy must be nice to have that good old head start. I see every day why they didn't and Don't want us to have anything but I ain't mad at em...
Not crude but genius.
You couldn't afford to build cars like that any more especially with all the wood. Absolutely gorgeous back when cars had soul
Howard's collection is a treasure especially with the stories behind each car he has acquired. This video is a wonderful documentation of his collection. With all of Howards knowledge, he is the most valuable treasure. I'm sure it was a special treat for Alex to be able to hear the stories and film the collection.
He should call Jay Leno and maybe they could make some deals.
Or maybe have Jay do a tour also. That would be awesome!
Howard’s collection is amazing. His stories about each car brings the collection to life. My husband & I were very proud to have had Howard chauffeur us in one of his cars for our wedding. A cherished memory.
WOW ❤
Hi Lovette That was a wonderful day in your life I enjoyed it also, Howard
No wonder Howard is so social - what a great guy to spend some time with.
My Dad Is A huge Car Buff. Life is Hell for him since 2019. IAM gunna show him this Video and will make his day. Thanks Thanks Howard .
Wow. Really interesting! When my wife and I were married we were in Cape Town and had chauffer-driven 1935 (I think) 20/25 Rolls Royce as our wedding car. The gentleman that owned it was the chauffer (of course!). He also had a an old polished aluminium 1925 Phantom that was once owned by some Maharajah in India. It was actually the car I wanted for our wedding car, but my wife opted for the 20/25 because it was so windy on the day. That's Cape Town!
Interesting the description he gives of "quarter-sawn" wood. To a sawyer, there are three types of cut woods: plain/flat-sawn, quarter-sawn and rift-sawn, and it depends on where the wood is taken from the log. Looking at the end grain, if the growth rings are arched, the board is considered plain or flat sawn. If they are are steeply angled, they're quarter-sawn, and if they are less steeply angled, the board is considered rift-sawn. Plain-sawn wood can cup; quarter-sawn is more stable and the back and front of the board has the same grain pattern. Rift-sawn is also stable but will also have grain on the edges. The sawyer achieves quarter-sawn grain by cutting the log into four quarters along the length of the log, and then each quarter is cut into planks at a 45 degree angle, like slices in a pie.
Yes you are correct about quarter sawn wood, what he is referring to is called book matched and quarter matching veneers.
You should donate a copy of this video to the museum. It's a part of his story and a part of history.
You’re very generous with other peoples things.
Many thanks to Howard for sharing this amazing collection. There is a lot of history here! Thank you, Alex, for bringing this to us. It was a delight to hear Howard talk about these historic vehicles.
What beautiful cars! I've loved old cars ever since my grandfather restored 2 back in the '50's when I was little. My favorite line in this story was how one car just leads to another----sounds like a guy named Alex!
I think what impressed me more than the cars was Howard's memory of all the details from the time he aquired the car to if they had been restored before or after his purchase and how much he had driven each one.
What an interesting man !although he’s a collector his house is very tidy ,he’s displayed everything. All the cars are amazing
I'm not a car enthusiast. This video is fantastic. So much history and a delightful guide.
Thanks. i'm happy i could help
wörthläss when you cänt get out after äccident xxD
im präctikäl. after the thing ^ ^
Not going to lie, imay have shed a tear or two, remembering my late dad, who was such a car guy, and restored a few cars of his own-primarily Chryslers and Dodges. He would have loved this for sure! I swear there wasn’t anything he didn’t know about antique cars- makes, models, years, engines, special feature-you name it! But he had a special place in his heart for Auburns, Cords, and Deusenburgs, and he visited the museum in Auburn Indiana every year during their ACD Days celebration. Good memories!
I usually skip the car videos, but this was fascinating and I watched the whole 51.46 minutes! Alex your skills in interviewing were superb, allowing this lovely gentleman to tell his stories in his own quiet way. And you even had a cat in it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I had a boat. It got stolen.
His knowledge and memory is unbelievable!
What a beautiful collection of cars and the history. Howard’s passion for these vehicles is amazing a true testament of his love and dedication.
Simply AMAZING. I could watch Howard and his videos daily. We all know the Rolls Royce name and I now have the highest level of respect for their products.
Alex you must of been in heaven ❤️
Excellent coverage...love your choice of music ♥️
Not a car person, but I’m a sucker for those with enthusiasm for what they do! Thanks for introducing us to Howard.
Guys like Howard are far and few between. Meeting guys like him is a treasure, a perfect example of how humble hard work and effort lead to big things. Listening to his story and quiet enthusiasm is half of the enjoyment.
I'd bet this video gets better long term views, I'd bet a lot of people will checking it out years from now. Thanks for sharing
Happy i could help
Not a car person but enjoyed every moment of the show. So nice to have met Howard.
Very interesting !! ......... how Howard showed us the car in the state it was, when shipped from the factory without the actual body mounted on it. I've never seen this before. Thank you Howard .
i was expecting a hoard. So nice to see someone who actually has a collection and treats it as it deserves.
Howard is so cool !! I have never moved either !! I thought I was the only one.
WOW! Incredible collection, thank you Howard for sharing it.
Wowzers what a collection! Thank you Howard for doing the work all these years. Your passion and loving preservation of that passion are evident in your collection.
That plane resembles a 1946 Swift. Love his amazing collection. He's one of a kind.
You have found your kindred spirit! Howard is an amazing wealth of information and interests. Pilot, luxury antique cars, and farmer!
I am not interested in cars and usually skip your episodes that have to do with cars, but this was absolutely fascinating. Please thank Howard for his time and sharing his vast knowledge. Nice to know there are collectors who aren't kooks!! Thanks to you, too, for your good interviewing skills.
I am amazed at the memory this man has. A wealth of information!
I could listen to Howard all day long about his life and cars.
Great video and a lasting tribute to Howard. Guys like him I'm afraid aren't being born anymore. Or at least not very often. He's a treasure.
Get a grip. He was a rich kid.
No not really I live on the farm and worked out for many years and then I worked with a company in manufacturing and then I became a part owner and then in the recession we went broke and I picked up the pieces and started again and I really was a one man show and mom and dad helped me with answering phone calls and dad helped in the shop building our furnace cleaning trucks. Just lots of work for many years. Not getting married probably made quite a difference also Howard

Never give up. You did everything the right way. I notice the loud speakers you have everywhere. Music is also important for me. Greetings from switzerland and I wish you all the best, especially good health!
@@franzinauen8443 Franz You are very observant . Yes I like old time music and accordion music in particular and listen on U tube almost every night. The speakers are Kliptich ( not correct spelling) all horn speakers for auditoriums , very nice sound We hosted the Grand North American Old Time Fiddle Championships in the Hooper building for two years and they used the speakers the second year.
@@howardlengert My friends say that I have an 'fotographic view'. I dont see it that way, but I see the details. You have very nice cars. I can only guess how much time you used to build up that collection. Thousands of hours, but it was worth it.
Wow, such a fabulous interview! I could listen to Howard talk about his cars all day! I drove a 1957 Chrysler New Yorker in High School and I love classic cars because of it!
He is a force to be reckoned with. What a wonderful life youve had. I salute you Sir. ❤❤❤❤
This was a beautiful, personal video that Howard graciously offered. People may scoff at collectors, but if you interview them, they will make you smile and cry
It wasn't a Grey Poupon jar but I still laughed hard at the reference 😝
Great collection, it's amazing!
I'm not a car person......but I can say "those are nice cars !" Great video........
What a wonderful story. We had a Rolls Royce for our wedding 50 years ago, and a Bentley for the bridesmaids. My husband worked at Rolls Royce aero division before we emigrated to Canada in 1981. He worked on the RB211 airplane. It was a huge engine and he had to stand on a duckboard to be able to reach.
This post is very much appreciated.
What a wonderful, and personal, collection of historically important cars.
Condition. Condition. Condition.
What an awesome collection Howard has put together. I know some he bought restored but the attention to detail he has and his knowledge of these vehicles is outstanding. Thank you for giving us the privilege of seeing such fine craftmanship. Must be amazing to drive or ride in any one of these .Keep Safe ❤Keep Well❤
Beautiful history beautiful cars thank you for sharing your collection Howard and thanks for the video Alex
What an amazing collection! And a great interview. Howard seemed to get younger and younger as he walked around. His enthusiasm is wonderful to see!
Jay Leno has to come and visit Howard. What a collection. Next , we want to see the salt and pepper collection.
Oh such beauties! Well done Howard!
This interview is pure gold. Not just for your region but all of North America.
Stunning. A friend in the UK used to work for Hooper and have sent him the video as I think he can bring a few of these stories to life for Howard. It's an amazing life lived every day. Wow!
+
Oh my goodness! What an incredible collection! Beautiful.
Howard is one of the unassuming men that has a fantastic history, it really should be written down, but I’m sure your video has gone some way to saving his story 😊 well done 😊👍
Howard has quite the memory and some wonderful stories ! And oh ya some RR's !
One of the most interesting reporting i saw about RR . i'm 60 on october and well, i couldn't bought my dreamy car one day, this is it ...( Silver cloud is my favorite ) thank U to share and big hug from me, from France, Alain

Wow! This interview was one for the history books! Excellent😊
What a gem Howard is!!! He is so knowledgeable and doesn't skip a beat about the history of each vehicle. This could be you someday, Alex, sitting in a recliner and passing on so much information to the next generation!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Such a delightful man. Thank you so much for sharing the magnificent collection of beautiful cars.
what a great story from Howard, lovely legacy. thank you for the journey into his history
Thank you, Mr. Howard for letting us see the collection of R & R . this is my dream car . I was like a kid in a candy store when he was showing them to you for us to see.
Wow, he could take all of those to Pebble Beach and bring in quite a crowd!
The history that Howard gave us cannot be found in any books. Thank you for sharing Howard and to Alex, thank you for another video with substance.
I think some of your viewers need to upgrade their technology. I'm old as Moses and can hear everything clearly using my cheap laptop. I never know what to expect with your channel. It is always interesting. Thanks so much for your content and also your presentation and families' participation.
AMAZING!!!! Thank you for sharing your collection. Howard . Im mechanic and Love it.
This video is one of the best things that UA-cam provides a platform for all of us to see. This is priceless, not only to his family but the rest of us as well. Alex has perfect manners, shows his respect and actually listens to the story. Thank you!
Enjoyed visiting with Howard and all his beauties.
I would have listened for another hour…so interesting and informative.Excellent interview Alexander.
This guy has such great knowledge and memories! It's wonderful you did this video to capture it all!
What an amazing collection and such a lovely man. Howard is so down to earth and knowledgeable. Very enjoyable tour of gorgeous cars. Thanks for sharing.
what an amazing story... can me visit Howard again... chance of a lifetime... wow... Harold
The '29 Boat Tail is outrageously sexy. Would have liked a walk around to see all aspects. It just shines with the best of early era RRs.
You can see more of it in a video Alex made when he first visited the museum.
@@GuyWithTheDogs Thank you.
Thank you Howard for letting Alex have this rare interview, Amazing!
What a beautiful opening. Perfect showcase of his car collection.
Thankyou Howardfor sharing your interesting story!
I've never saw Alex so excited...
That will be you one day, Alex.
You too, are a legend.
Sound advice! Great looking car collection. Hats off to you Howard!! 🎉 Thanks for bringing this to us. I know you had a good time.
I remember in the 60's when i was a boy a guy in our neighborhood had a TV in his car.
It had a Boomerang shaped antenna mounted to the trunk. He also had a record player
mounted in the dash that played 45rpm records. You fed them to the player just like a
CD player. It was really for listening to records when you were stopped, not driving or the needle would skip.
Alex, you were very good at this sit down. Interviewing people and hearing their stories of why they do what they do is interesting as well as seeing their interest. I'm sure there are endless amounts of fascinating people there with not only stories but hobbies to go along with them. Weather it's eccentric people just enjoying life and their love for things or modest laid back people like Howard, I enjoy it. It reminded me of a long loved weekend show called the Texas Country Reporter. Now it's episodes are on youtube. If you ever hear of or come across more people with time capsule basements again, I would love to see more of those too. Well done!! The cat is so cute. I always enjoy your jokes LOL
Great video. Howards car collection is magnificent. His knowledge of them is amazing.
Alex- I hope you had a chance to swap car restorations stories. And I can see this being you in 35 years!
Words fail me. What an achievement. What an individual.
Howard's not fooling me! At 24 he was a gangster & obviously still is! LOVE this collection 💘💝💖💝💘
Love your collection Howard 😊
An amazing collection and the property of a most interesting and unassuming gentleman! Everything housed beautifully too! Thankyou Alex, for being able to present this and introducing us to such an informed and genuine character! XXX
Wow! What a beautiful collection! Howard is so sweet and soft spoken.
Beautiful cars! Howard is an interesting person, and the interview is a treasure!
So interesting...saw you and Stephen go to the museum. But this was so fun meeting him.
Wonderful! My favorite moment was when you were discussing how the carriage holding the driver being outside the coach was likely a transitional design relatively shortly after horse and buggy era.
0ne of the best historical tutorials Ive ever watched!!!!! please bring more?
I'm such a easy mark for a car with style and flair and this collection is all of that and more. The story behind the collection is just lovely to hear.
Thank you very much, Alexander. Although I don't know much about cars I enjoyed watching this.💗
Wow what a collection! Thank you Howard for sharing and thank you Alexander for bringing us his story.
What a fantastic car Collection thanks for telling us all about it Howard .
What a beautiful collection and such a lovely man.
I worked in the Summers, while a teen, at my Uncles car shop. He brought Rolls Royce, Bentley's, London taxis and double decker busses back from England. What fond memories I have for these cars and the engineering involved.
AWESOME VIDEO...Thank You BOTH so much for sharing ...as I live in North West Michigan and realistically speaking i most likely would never have seen this collection or recieved all this history had you not made this video Alex...or had Howard not preserved and restored all of these Beautiful Rolls Royces...A RESOUNDING HORRAYYY Again to you gentlemen..! Keep up the Fantastic work...
Wow, I take my hat off to that guy. He is one of the most enthusiastic and driven people I have seen. Tell him he is incredible. David Hoy
I wanted to say something smart or cool or funny but … WOW … is the only thing comes to mind … 😂
