Don't get me wrong, the anime is one of my favourites of the season. I really liked the idea of showing the scenes from the two sides after one another and not just cut in to one side and then cut back to the other like it's usually done. But the competition is really strong as well. We are only in the spring season and 86 has to go against things like To Your Eternity, Vivy and Shadows House (which I guess will not win, since most didn't give it a shot, but that's a really good show which has a very unique take where they switch cute and creepy mixed in with a good mystery). Then next season, there will be The detective is already dead and later this summer the second season of the Madoka Magica Side Story is releasing as well and that series was always incredible when it comes to visuals and music and while I was a bit disappointed by S1, there is a lot of potential for a super interesting S2. And then there is also Wonder Egg Priority with a super interesting direction, animation and also music and theme which will broadcast the last episode on June, 29th and since they had time I am expecting a really bombastic ending because they showed they are capable of doing that despite being a small team.

i need to know that others noticed in the show that there were 5 birds that slowly faded, i don't know what happens in the books but I really hope its not each bird fading representing each one of the dying as they progress because then makes this scene even sadder.
I also thought it meant the death of them, but then a few scenes later we see them fading away one by one as they enter the new territory. So it might just represent what the birds are representing (them going in the unknown...)
To me, it represented that they are finally out of the grasp of the Republic. They're like birds now who are free to fly and just got out of their miserable cage. The Pararaid got cut off only because it is out of signal coverage already, it didn't mean that they died.
In a sense, the birds are shown from Lena’s point of view at that moment. They are heading to their deaths in Legion territory, and she will never see them again. The only thing she can do will be to bring flowers to their final destination.
Interesting fact, the red flowers showing in multiple scenes are called "Higanbana" are flowers that grew on the path to the afterlife according to Japanese folk lore, representing that they may not survive. Hats off to the director creating thes heartbreaking scenes!
