    Work does not just involve the hours on the job. Its getting ready for work, commuting to work, sometimes over an hour both ways. Involves thinking about work even when not on the job. involves keeping up with modern technology and changes. Add another 4 hours to an 8 hour day. I am thinking about work possibly 90 percent of my day, even when away and on weekends.

      Exactly! I never realized how much time it actually took from me till I retired. Just seemed normal. Affected everything I did to some degree. Now in retirement I can get the balance that works for me. Thanks and take care. Steve

    My wife & I are planning to retire from running our business this summer, at first I was freaking out as to what I’m going to do but now after a few months thinking about it I am absolutely loving the thought of total & absolute chilled mode!

    • @retirementcorner
      @retirementcorner  5 місяців тому

      Exactly how it is. Constant chill mode. Whether you're doing something fun that you want or something not quite so fun that has to be done. The fun stuff is even more fun and the other stuff ain't quite as bad as it used to be. The nervousness and freaking out is normal and happens to most of us. (Me included) Once you retire and start figuring things out you start getting a little more comfortable. Then retirement becomes great and you'll love it. When you go give me a shout and I'll ring the bell for you both. Congrats and take care. Steve

    Do not allow fear of the future to rule your today. Living a simple life does not require a lot of money.

      Just somethings that help my retirement be so good I believe. Damage control for later in retirement, trade offs allowed me to retire a little early and the balance changes constantly. Some weeks I need more R&R some weeks more work and activities. Retirement allows me to adjust as needed. Great weekend. Thanks. Steve

      Being retired allows me to take a break when I need or want. Just love it. Got a lot I want to get to this week and the weather is going to be great. We'll see how much actually gets done. Already penciled in Wed. and Fri. in for fishing. Take care. Steve

    Hey Steve, thanks for the video. Speaking of risk mitigation and trade-offs, this last week was interesting. My wife and I drove to a nearby town where she grew up and I attended college after getting out of the Navy. There is a cemetery there where her parents, her brother and a daughter of ours (stillborn) is buried. We’ve talked about making burial plans for some time now, to have those decisions made and to take that burden off our kids. In that sense it is risk mitigation…we have the plots we want near other family and protection against future price increases. It’s also a matter of trade-offs…pay a big chunk now (more than I expected, honestly) or keep the money invested and hopefully see it grow. We haven’t signed the docs yet because I want to think and pray about it some more. But it makes me realize how little people talk about death and funeral planning. I know it’s a sensitive subject for some. I also imagine most folks are just trying to get by, much less prepay for a funeral. Maybe I’m a little odd that way.

      I agree, better complete that delicate decision-making process sooner rather than later, even if actions themselves wait a bit.

      Sorry to hear about your daughter. We had a miscarriage between our daughter and son. Not the same but still affected us, the wife especially. Exactly! They aren't pleasant things to deal with at anytime but by taking care of things now it can lift the burden on loved ones when the time comes. The loss of a spouse is one of the hardest things we'll go through in retirement. Not having to grieve and make decisions at the same time can be the last and best gift we ever give someone. Take care. Steve

      @@retirementcorner Thanks Steve. I’m sorry to hear about your miscarriage. Unfortunately these things happen more often than we would expect and they are tough on everyone. But by going through it we were able to help our youngest daughter when she experienced her miscarriage. Take care.

    Steve, I have to say that you have come a long way in a short time Brother. I remember when I first started watching you. Your nervousness about taking the jump, which everyone has to now your confidence. Keep up the good work.

      Experience plays a lot into it. I've learned so much in this first year plus of retirement and still have a long way to go. The learning, comfort and confidence gets better each day. Still a lot I haven't figured out but I'm working on it. Take care. Steve

      @@BuzzRetirementGarage Not a thing. Wanted to catch some small panfish first just to get a feel for it. Scared of getting a big carp, turtle or something. So I was careful with where I went and how. Going to take it to the river this week. Definitely get something with it there. If it breaks, it breaks. Should be fun either way. Steve

    The last four or five years teaching I kept track of my time, and during the school year I averaged about 75 hours per week actually working from teaching to planning to grading to responding to emails, etc. That didn’t include commuting or the time e it occupied my mind. That was not healthy. I retired as early as I could.

    • @retirementcorner
      @retirementcorner  5 місяців тому +1

      Exactly! We do it for years and never think about it. It becomes normal to us. Retiring gave me a chance to find my own balance. The perfect mix of active and leisure and I can change it up as I see fit. Take care. Steve

    How many years do you keep in your cash bucket, Steve? So important to buffer for a market drop. All the best from Somerset, England.

    • @retirementcorner
      @retirementcorner  5 місяців тому +1

      Currently I have about 3 years. I like to have 2-3 for the bad market years when I have to use it. I have enough in the stable value fund of my 401k to get me to SS. I wanted that in case things went south for awhile when I retired. Kind of guaranteed my retirement until I could get some help from SS. Been fortunate so far. Take care. Steve

    Looking at putting some cash in a high yield savings account once I retire. Cash will come from sell of second house. That will be one of my buckets. High yeild is paying 4.8 percent. . for now. I am sure it may drop at some time.

      Great idea. We put my 401k distribution into a Money Market for that reason. More interest than something else and roll a little bit of it each month to live on while the rest is making decent interest. Works for us. Take care. Steve
