    I knew Signet would be in here. Recently tried it out, and immediately thought that even my parents who are not very used to high abv spirits can enjoy it. Silky smooth coffee-cocoa goodness.

    Kavalan Virgin Oak. It's still the best whisky I have tried. Eventhough this year I had the chance to have a dram of Glenglassaugh 50 years old, nothing has come close to this Kavalan for me. My bottle is going down, I would have to replace it soon.

    My favorite premium whisky of the year was actually on your list. It was the Glenmorangie Signet. Nothing has that Signet profile and I wish more distilleries would try. The roasted coffee notes combined with the Glenmorangie distillate are just special. It's not a gimmick. This is its own thing similar to Chartreuse in the world of liqueur. Signet feels like a splurge which is exactly what I want if I'm paying up for a whisky.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  7 місяців тому +1

      Absolutely agree. Not a gimmick at all. The flavours, compexity, sophistication, and textures all blow me away with this one. Much more than just a pretty bottle. 🥃

    Nice list (I think), haven't tried them (mostly due to my premium dollars going towards bourbon and rye) but will lookout. Macallan Harmony was my pricey pour - nice notes, delicate and well balanced but I wanted more hence I found it a bit pricey for what it offered. Cheers and keep being funny. We should all be on a 'non-budget' : )~

    I've told this story elsewhere, but just a few days before my son was born, completely by chance while looking for a bottle of Maraschino liqueur, I came across a website that was selling Springbank 12 near RRP (never seen it sold at that price before or since). I managed to snag one and it arrived in time to have a dram on the evening he was born. So... Yeah, even if the whisky wasn't as good as it is, that'd still have to make my number one.

    My two favorite splurges for this year each came in at $140 and were well worth the money. Speyburn 18 and an older bottling of Arran 18. Love them both and, when budget allows, would love to replace them. The Speyburn is a bit easier to find. I've only ever seen the Arran 18 once in the wild, and I bought it. I've never come across the new bottling. As for Redbreast, fortunately for my budget the 12 Year Cask Strength brings me all the joy I need, so barring a lottery win, I don't ever expect to lay out for the 21.
    I've gotten into whisky relatively late in life (just as well, I probably couldn't have afforded it before the kids were grown) and this has been my first full year of Whisky Journey and I have really appreciated your reviews along the way. Cheers to you and I hope you enjoy lots of great whisky over the holidays with your family and friends!

My non budget whisky of the year is Signatory 2010 Linkwood Cask Strength. Beautiful. Dense, Oily, 58.3% non chil filled and natural color. Not bad value at about 100 us dollars.

  • @Tobey1003

    Awesome list and it fits with my journey of this year... a journey which often takes paths that are influenced because of good whisky reviews with good entertainment;) A big thanks to you for helping me spend my money wisely and up to this point without any bad purchases :D
    Over the last 18 months, I've been stocking up older whiskies, so a lot have been in the €80-120 (85-130$) range. The price rises this year led me to buy bottles like Caol Ila 18, Ancnoc 18, Tomatin 18, Bowmore 18 Deep & Complex, Glencadam 18, Arran 18, Craigellachie 17 for 80-100€. Up to 120€ it was then Longmorn 18, Ledaig 18 and Highland Park 18. You are responsible for many of the purchases :D However, these bottles also last at least 2-4 years, because I rarely touch them.
    Now to my actual non-budget bottle:
    This year I bought a single cask (for the very first time) of GlenAllachie 2007, 15 year old, PX cask . Every part of the distillation and bottling dates (day, month and year) can be traced back to the relationship with my wife (date when our relationship started and length of relationship, wedding day, etc). Not one of the important numbers on the bottle is without reference to us. I'm not really a fan of single casks, but I HAD to buy this one for 140€. After Glenmorangie Signet, Glengoyne 21 and GlenDronach 21, this was my fourth most expensive bottle to date. I haven't even tasted it yet and will only do so on my wedding day and on the day we came together. But this was a must-have and I would have spent even a bit more on it :D

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  7 місяців тому +2

      Wow... what are the odds with that Glenallachie, eh? I'm not superstitious or anything, but if ever a bottle was destined to be bought, eh?
      Good move buying up older age-stated whiskies while we can. Who knows how much longer that will be an option for people with budgets to respect.
      Thanks for watching and for the kind words, Tobey. Cheers to cracking that Glenallachie when the time is right! 🥃

    My most premium first was the Glenrothes 18 this year, which is prohibitively expensive in my area. The nose was almost perfect - almost over the top (vanilla, sherry), very typical, but high quality Speyside. However, at this price point, I can get two less premium bottles that I enjoy almost as much.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  7 місяців тому +1

      Yeah the reason I haven't tried the Glenrothes 18 yet is that it's quite pricey in my market. Still, sounds like an interesting one. I'll have to keep an eye on it and see if it ever pops up on sale. Cheers! 🥃

    Bought like 3 bottles of Longmorn 18 this year😂, costs $125 at where I am from, it’s one of the best value here. My biggest splurge is the Kavalan solist PX, distilled in Feb 2011 and bottled in Oct 2022, so around 11 years 8 months aging in the barrel. I have yet to open it. The aging seems unusually long for a Kavalan solist so I’m excited and also wondering if it’s due to the cask being less active so they had to age it longer.

Got Speyburn 18 on offer for €72 and Benromach 15 on offer for €58 and picked up the Ardnamurchan peated CS 2023 version for €69.So usually with me I spend between € 50 and €80. I went to a whiskey event and was able to try a variety of whiskies, such as the Octomore, which was surprisingly good. Surprising because I thought it was going to be very peaty like the Port Charlotte 10 yr, which I didn’t like. Mind you, I like peaty scotches like Lagavulin 16 yr, Laphroaig, Ardbeg, etc. I also came across the Glenmorangie 18 yr and Signet. Really liked the 18 yr old, but I was a bit thrown off by the signets even when I was expecting it to be different. It wasn’t bad, but I feel like I didn’t give enough time to really get the notes as I was in a rush to try out others. But I will say that I did buy me a bottle of both the Glen 18 and Signet. Hehe… so I will definitely be able to savor both when I open them.

  • @DOF525

    Great choices, signet is indeed a special one. I don't know if qualifies as splurge but i really liked the bladnoch 14, special lowlands scotch, feels older (mine is from 2021) and beautiful presentation!

      @Gwhisky  6 місяців тому

      The Bladnoch 14 is definitely a splurge bottle in my market, where it's on par with the Signet and more expensive than the rest of this list. That said, I really enjoy it, too. Great choice! 🥃

    Thank you Geoff for your suggestions.
    Your choices are not obvious: many people would suggest the 18 yo versions of the most popular brands (AnCnoc, Arran, Bunnahabhain, Deanston...) while your choices seem much more interesting to me.
    In particular the Longmorn 18yo (much appreciated by Roy), the Speyburn 18yo and the Glenmorangie Signet (but this is really costly and far exceeds my budget, perhaps it is more suitable for an elegant gift).
    I wish you all the best for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, I hope to hear many of your new proposals and reviews in 2024.

      Very kind words, Frances. Yes I try to stay away from picks that are too obvious, although sometimes it's inevitable that I go along with the hype train. After all, there's usually good reasons for whiskies to be widely celebrated by the community. Apologies for the slow reply. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and here's to a happy and healthy new year. Cheers! 🥃

    My buddy picked up Yamazaki 18 while I got the 12 (I'm a bit newer to the scene), the 18 is much more of a splurge but it seemed worth it to me. I love my 12 though, still the best I own currently.

  • @whiskyguidedog6558

    An excellent selection! I agree wholeheartedly with all but the Glenmorangie, which for some reason, doesn't taste that fruity to me. But really, this could have been my list, just substitute that one for the mystery one in your glass. We're leaving out the peat bombs and Springbanks for reasons of price and availability, however, honestly, they are my lane, so we could add Octomore 12.3 or 11.3, etc. etc (PC Islay Barley best for value). . Baught a backup of the stunning Ardnamurchan 'Paul Launois 2022 and the longmorn 18, the Redbreast 21, and two backups of the Speyburn 18. The price on Pulteny 18 smarts, but once I got past the spicy oak it's really top class. A good value score was the Rock Island 21 yo for back up bottles. Merry Christmas and better living everyone! Thanks again

My splurge this year was an 11 year old single ex-bourbon cask Kilchoman bottled exclusively for Turkiye and I liked it so much I bought two. I bought the Signet, along with Springbank 15, and two bottles of Deanston 18. The latter went over big time at my 70th birthday. There were maybe four people in the room who knew about the Signet and SB15, and I was drinking Benromach 15, so that's what folks got when they asked to have what I was drinking. This has left me plenty to ply my really close friends who are present in person more often. I like both the Signet and SB15, but I doubt that I will replace once gone.
    I have a Speyburn 15 open and have been favorably impressed. I could see buying up the age statement, particularly if it is on a similar price rung as Deanston 18.
    This year was my year of exploring the modest peated expressions and I came out a Benromach 15 adherent. There are other acceptable peated expressions within my selection (as well as unacceptable ones) and this year, I was pleased to become acquainted with Port Charlotte 10, Meikle Toir The Sherry One, Lagg Corriecravie, Longrow Peated, and Isle of Raasay Hebridean. It has been a good year.

      Hah yeah you've been pretty enthusiastic about Benromach recently. Understandable. That 15 is such a beauty. Nice selection of younger/newish whiskies in there, too. Great set of picks. My wife and I discovered Scotch early this year and terrific reviews like yours have fueled an amazing exploration. We have had several splurges this year foremost was a trip to Scotland in July. Our spluge bottles on the trip were a Longmorn 18 picked up in Edinburgh and a Teapot Dram at Glengoyne. I received a Ledaig 18 for Father’s Day. We purchased the Glenmorangie Signet for our anniversary this year. For Christmas we purchased the Talisker 18 and Kilkerran 16. For my wife’s upcoming birthday I bought her a Craigallichie 17. It is very hard to pick the favorite but I’d struggle to disagree with the Longmorn pick.

    Great list! Thanks for sharing. I haven't tasted the Ardnamurchan Paul Launois yet. But I will buy it after writing this comment. I agree the Longmorn 18 is incredible. My favorite distillery. Did you try the 25? I opened this bottle last month. Oh man that whisky is incredible! (I know it is really expensive).
    My Favorite poor this year was a really special bottle that I opened end of last month to celebrate my new hire. It's the:
    "Glenfarclas 'Probably Speyside's Finest distillery' 1965 Douglas Laing 46 Year Old / Old and Rare"
    Oh boy that dram! Soo complex, so special, so good, …. I was really dam surprised by this whisky. But as Ralfy says "1 minute in the glass for 1 year in the cask", it really needs time to open. If you drink it right away, it's all closed, nothing special. But if you wait 45 minutes, it's a fireworks. This is the proof that what's he's saying is completely correct (not that I doubted). That's my whisky of the year (if not of my life)… Hopefully not. I wish I could send you a sample. But apparently it's not possible from Switzerland. I'll try to do it from another country if I can. Cheers

      As for the Glenfarclas, sounds incredible. I've had some older Glenfarclases, and they have been absolutely stellar. Not sure if I've had anything from quite that far back... no doubt an absolute killer.
      Hah no worries about the sample. I've got plenty of samples to get through here, so absolutely no pressure. Thanks for all your support this year, my friend. Cheers! 🥃
