The Union Pacific Silvis Heritage Donation Move - Departing Cheyenne

- On the 11th of November in 2022, UP put together a Heritage train consisting of 3985, 5511, and 6936, along with several Passenger cars, a caboose, a ex. UP/AMTK E Unit (B unit), and a CNW F unit, all coupled to a short manifest. We head East out of Cheyenne and document the move.

I love that all of these are getting restored. I also don’t understand the UP hate. UP is not in the business of restoring and operating steam trains. They are in the business of running trains for money. It’s amazing that they even run 4014 and 844. But to just give away two of their historical steam trains to be fully restored by people who know what they are doing just makes sense. Looking forward to seeing all of these under their own power.
Their actually going to run them. 5511 and 3985 are being restored to operational condition. They aren't giving them away permanently it's temporary because they don't have the money to restore them in Cheyenne
@@railfanmaximstill7279it’s as good as permanent. Just because there is a clause in the donation that says UP could take them back isn’t a guarantee. UP isn’t contracting these pieces out for rebuild, they are cleaning house.
Most of the hate pretty much stems from the fact that the schedule was taken away and then it went on a detour that was (almost) not publicized. The UPRR Historical Society helped to give note of the detour.
@@davidng2336 there has been hate long before that.
@@PereMarquette1223 I mean, I’m just talking about this particular event.
Glad to see that UP engines 3985,5511 and 6936 are being transferred to a new home & will receive proper maintenance to be later restored back to operating condition in the future.
Nice video, really excited about the restoration of all this equipment that the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America is getting from Union Pacific.
My husband grew up in Silvis! I can hardly wait to see these in their new home!
Heading for my home state, I will definitely be visiting their new home. It's cool seeing Ed riding in the cab of 5511, thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
Where do they plan on running 5511 once it runs again? I heard that two reasons why UP didn't bring it back themselves was due to its lower speed and because it's not articulated (which 3985 and 4014 don't have to worry about). I could see Iowa, Illinois and perhaps Nebraska being good options, if UP allows it.
@@thunderbird1921 In Iowa, and none of those reasons make sense, the reason they didn't themselves is UP didn't have the time nor money to get 5511 going. Same with Challenger.
@@DenverRailfanHD i’m pretty sure they got the money they get 3985 going again the UP is a multi million dollar company I think what’s going on is they don’t have the time to do it the Challenger needs a heavy overhaul and unfortunately at this present moment I don’t think they got the time to do it I hope one 3095 is up and running again she will you reunite with the 4014! I hope!
@@rudycarlson8245 It was a decision to restore one or the other, and they picked the 4014. Even 4014 went over budget.
I'm a former employee and stock holder in the recent years U.P. is all about cutting and cost saving. It's amazing what this company will get rid of to make a favorable impression to an upper level executive.....
Pretty SAD really ,"Greed knows No Limits" ! I have loved TRAINS since I was a kid & still do at 75 ,they Helped Build This Great Country & never get their Due ...MISSOURI PAUL 👍🇺🇸👍👌😎👌🤗🌞👍
Sounds like any company sell anything so upper execs can buy that new multi million dollar house or yacht or plane
Nice catch and I subscribe to your channel! I hope 3985, 6936, 5511 return and rebuild soon!
Sad to see them leave UP hands. Glad you got to catch this historic move. Great video and new sub for ya.
There will never be a fantasticb up lash up like that ever again thanks for this great video
great news on the upcoming restoration! That lead diesel, though, needs serious resto itself!!
Outstanding catch thanks for sharing 👍
The DD40 looks to be in good shape
bro ikr. Love that loco as much as the 4014 UP Big Boy
Saw 3985 pull RB&B&B Circus train into Denver, paced it from Greeley. Satisfying to see it get the attention it deserves! Cannot wait!
Well done Union Pacific, keep up the good work.

I enjoyed seeing the the video and old rolling stock and have great hopes it going to a good home to be very well cared for..😁
I feel’s so good to see 3985 on the main line
Awesome video!!
Thank you!
Big Boy and Challenger, I live about 20 miles or so from the U.P main line here in the Cornhusker, probably missed it, would of liked to see it. It snowed here this morning, would make some beautiful pictures. Thank you for the video.
Very good video, but it broke my heart to see Challenger 3985 (4-6-6-4) in such bad shape. I remember about 20 years ago, 3985 was 'on tour' to the Pomona area in So. Cal.. I saw it up close and personal. Thought it was colossal, but not as big as Big Boy 4014 (4-8-8-4) which was at the Rail Museum in Pomona at the time.. I've actually sat in the engineers seat when it was there........There's nothing like steam power!!!!!!
American trains are beautiful.
Looks like a lot of Oldies but Goodies headed for Rail Road Nervana!
A U.P employee at a steam shop open house explained that they were not going to restore 5511, as it was from the age of slow freights in the early 1900s and its operating speed was 25-30 mph making it unsuitable for use on excursions and special trains. The same employee also said that 3985 had been cannibalized for parts to restore 4014 as some parts were used on both locomotives
At that time, 2 years ago it was scheduled to be sent to an undisclosed location as a static display.
Honestly 5511 wasn't ever on the priority board with UP to be put back into service. Makes a little more sense to run on IAIS though.
Some art were cannibalized off a Big Boy back in the 80s when 3985 was restored. So it appears it's given some back. Back then Big Boys were static display.
So what is the plan for Challenger ? She was running not long ago.
@@trespire What Ive seen is that 3985 will be the first to be restored followed by 5511
3985 had a fire a few years back and hasnt run since as U.P. put all their resources into 4014 and even scavenged parts off 3985, which will have to be fabricated since only one other Challenger still exists as a static display.
Super video, great captures! Thumbs Up & Subscribe
Quite a collection
I see the schedule for the trip has been taken down and the web page says no public viewing. I'm just wondering what the deal is because I'd like to catch a video when it comes through eastern Iowa.
Apparently it's because they do not want to disturb the freight network, and having a set schedule, for this train especially, wouldn't work since it's going slow the whole way there and there has been things that pop up on the train that cause it to stop periodically, therefore not making the "station stop" on time for a lot of places.
@@DenverRailfanHD All the mechanisms in the steam locomotives have to be kept lubricated.
Awesome catch nice
Up 3985 going to Nebraska state fair museum with 5511 & 6936
Is #5511 a Mikado 2-8-2 or 2-10-2 with semi-vanderbilt 4-axle tender. WOW! To have one of those in Union Pacific back in action would be a real treat. It looks like a heavy Mikado.
Its a 2-10-2
Looks like the Union Pacific will finally have the big four in full operation.
Oh, so they're being donated for restoration, then given right back?
@@A88mph Probably. But they have to focus on the UP 844 and the “Big Boy” 4014.
It was written into the donation agreement that if The union pacific wants 3985 back the group that’s getting her now will give it up but the group will get something in return for it
@@rudycarlson8245 Interesting. Well is there a chance that UP 844 and 3985 will have a reunion?
@@matthewpastrikos7383 I think the chances are good! Of 844 and 3985 Will have a reunion at some point! I think I even think that the 4014 and the 3985 will be a Reunion
Awesome Catch!
Qué maravilla! 🤩
Don’t think I’ve ever seen a DD40 before.
Awesome to see the CNW Covered Wagon being saved !
Awesome that ALL of it saved !
We tried for years to get the CNW 8701 and 8646 saved but failed 😥😥
CNW 401 was given to the Boone and Scenic Valley. It’s currently waiting for brake repairs in Council Bluffs, where it was dropped off after the RRHMA equipment went through detour.
What an awesome VIDEO, 😁 historical trains!!!!! 😉👍 Certainly hope it make it to irs destination, may I ask where did this train ORIGINATE FROM? I DONT THINK CHYENNE HAD ALL THESE ENGINES AND CARS/CABOOSE IN STORAGE ALL THIS LONG.
Yes they did. I was up there a couple years ago when they had an open house at the steam shop
The C&NW unit was outside, the DD40, 3985 and 5511 were in a roundhouse across from the steam shop.
Several of the passenger cars were also outside.
Awesome
If the 844 and 4014 needed restoration and they went on this train where would they be on this train.
Fictional Question obviously
That was freaking awesome.
If the US ever fully electrified their rail network it would be interesting to see the number of wind turbines, solar panels and batteries required to power it.
That must of been great to see!
If I Were to See this Live I would Love it!
Me gusto mucho el video
For a second, I thought that Challenger-Class was another Big Boy.
Similar
Fantastic catch liked it and subbed
Cool video and channel just subscribed
Love the 3985 and 5511, but boy the DDA40X is a site to see too!
I’m surprised they didn’t remove draw bars for transport. Nice looking f unit and B unit.
leaving the draw bars on keeps the drivers "synchronized" while rolling down the track....
they did remove the pistons....
Do you know why it stopped at 7:55?
Crew probably saw something, they stopped multiple times on the way out of Cheyenne.
Flat tire? uhuh uhuh uhuh!!
Probably the only time you will see Young Valve Gear (on 5511) in action. And what a strange sight it makes!
Definitely not the only time. 5511 will be restored to operation!
@@chooch1764 We hope!
@@cliffleigh7450 Confidence is key, buddy.
I live in Cheyenne and I'm not happy about the leaving of my favorite Diesel.😪
UP local Y802 with 8330 leading as it meets another manifest S702 with 5716 leading!
hey i thought it had to be certified to be on the mainline ?
Over a certain speed without precautions maybe, but this is going pretty slow.
4014 and 3936 need a “worlds biggest steam diesel duo excursion
3985 and 844 need a excursion
5511 needs a standalone welcome back tour
And up 9000 needs to be saved,
They could have used a "Cleaner" lead engine
And a sweet sounding EMD would have been nice instead of the dingy old chugging appliance.
I'm impressed one locomotive could pull all that weight.
@@1940limited Well the extra cars on the end are empty, so that helps, plus I am sure there is a serious low speed limit on the tow job.
Anybody know how many 4-6-6-4 UP had?I think there a few more left around the country.
There is only 2 UP Challengers left in existence, the remaining 300-ish... scrapped 😭💔
@@firehawk0 At first I thought it was another northern then I took another look.Looks like they started then stopped.Anyway this is gonna take a whole to fix up.
Other than severely cutting the budget for the steam operations, its amazing that U.P. is getting rid of all these units when they likely have the best equipped shop for fabricating obsolete parts anywhere.
Anyone who knows even a little about mechanical devices and machining and has been in the steam shop knows that its a machinists wet dream. I seriously wonder whether the facility they are being transported to has anywhere near the capabilities of the U.P steam shop.
Upper management may have looked at what they spent on restoring 4014 and said ...."enough is enough"
Who knows, maybe the Silvis Shop has some of those machines as well. Ed is overseeing the project however.
@@DenverRailfanHD Thats one bright spot, but the rest of the crew there seem to be extremely knowledgeable and proficient at their trade as machinists and fabricators.
As an aside, they had the components and seals for one of the brake servos (4014) laid out on a table, and my wife remarked how enormous they were compared to servo seals in an automatic transmission.
The machinist at the table gave her a rather strange look..Im sure he was thinking "how would a woman know about this?"
Shes rebuilt transmissions.
I have a feeling UP management is happy to dispose of all this old stuff.
That thing looks like a nightmare to run.
Union pacific donation move
Geez that lead engine sure is a real smoker of a unit. Looks to become a toaster by the time it rolls into Silvis.
Okay. I have seen several versions of this rail movement but there was no audio to explain the move. Why are these items being moved? Where are they going? Are they going to be repaired, restored, and especially put back into operational status? Anyone out there can answer my questions?
The heritage equipment has been donated by Union Pacific to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America. The new owner will restore them to operating condition and operate excursion trains with them on regionals and short line railroads, when the restorations are complete.
@@chooch1764 That is fricken great! Where may we donate. Can't wait to see (if I live that long) a UP 2=10-2 operating under steam!!!!
Are those hoppers at the end revenue freight or additional braking?
Since there was different freight cars I kinda thought there was some revenue freight, but could be both.
@@DenverRailfanHD I thought they might be revenue, too. I was surprised just one locomotive could pull all this weight.
@@1940limited There was a second locomotive operating as a DPU just in front of the two flats with (railroad) trucks on them.
I hope they keeping dd40x
If it's on that train then im sure it wont be coming back.
Will all of that equipment be rebuilt and made track worthy?
That’s what they plan on doing. The only concern would be money
@@SouRwy4501Productions Well alot of money has been raised already, $436,136.36.
Big up NREC SYLVISS NICK ARE U STILL THERE
Correct me if I’m wrong but is that the 4014s tender attachment to 3985
Yes. 4014 currently has 3985's tender. It's original tender will be restored by the RRHMA and trade it back to the UP in exchange for 3985's tender.
After that donation someone is gonna have a lot of space in their garage
I thought they were going to move them 1 at a time
What's the deal with these engines Are they going to be exhibits or running Or restored
Restored to running condition.
Honestly, despite 3985 will be restored, I like 4014 better than 3985 because it is bigger and heavier. Anyone agree?
Funeral train ?
Yes, to be transformed into operational equipment again by its new owners.
Funeral train? Oh hell no! It is what is called a hospital train! To steam locomotives that are on it are there way to be rebuilt by the new owners in Illinois
Be nice if they had cleaned the filthy lead GE.
i have to say at least they appear to have there planning right - i live in northern california, and became stuck behind a malfunctioning signal in escalon california, again - i take this route about 5 times every 6 months and this was the 3rd time this year signal was on gates were down and no train - about 25 minutes into it an amtrack passed real slow but the signal still didnt go up - there in escalon the train horn is mounted on a pole, its kinda confusing actually - the time before there was a train on the crossing stopped, so i went to go around it about a mile up the high way got to intersection that was open no engines in site - there is no way that many cars broke loose and they didnt know- escalon sucks, its a shitty little illegal sanctuary, and speed trap, and it suits them just fine - and it stinks, and its ugly -
As a stockholder in Union Pacific Railroad I would like to know why all this railroad equipment is being given away. These are assets of the company. Centennial 6936 should have stayed with UP. UP 3985 could have been restored by the UP. Seems like UP 3985 has been shipped out because it was former UP manager Steve Lee's favorite engine. Union Pacific owes an explanation to the stockholders about this issue.
Do you want profits or to restore them?
The equipment has been donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America to be restored to operating condition.
Dividend man dividend man dividend man cry as you can
They are a liability, not an asset. UP wants them restored and a charity is the best way to do it. It would cost UP about 2.5 mil to fix them up themselves, and the profit is nil.
@@jstep4146 So when UP restored BigBoy 4014 to operation that was profitable?

The DDA40X shouldn't need much. Union Pacific overhauled both both diesel engines in I believe 2014 Era. Should be a very good candidate for any museum as a running locomotive. But I have to assume that the upkeep and maintenance on that old girl would be expensive!
I saw the CNW F unit at Fox Park in Council Bluffs yesterday. I wonder if UP is going to fix that one up themselves for their passenger trains. THAT would be cool!
@@jstep4146 In my opinion John, and I've followed UP's heritage fleet for years, I think 6936 is inevitable to run again, and soon, so we can guarantee that one. 3985 is supposed to get a full restoration to running condition, we'll see. As for 5511 and the streamliner, I'm gonna say those will likely get cosmetic restoration paint jobs and be put on static display. The reason I think this, is that we have to consider what kind of money we're talking about JUST to restore the challenger. It'd be pretty expensive to do all 3 locomotives.
Could have just used 6936 to pull the whole thing.......
It’s currently unoperational.
