    That was time well spent.
    Just a FYI regarding the Doppler effect, the pitch actually does change. The sound waves compress as the horn approaches the listener shortening the wavelength and slightly increasing the pitch and then expands as the horn distances itself effectively lengthening the wavelength and therefore lowering the pitch, that is the reason for the variations in the pitch.

    What's interesting is, from day one through the late 60's, Jensen was the stock speakers used in the 122. When CBS took over Electro Music, they switched over to using Eminence speakers. Eminence was easy to identify by the square magnet on the bass speaker. They were an affordable speaker for OEM and sounded good, but I do notice that 122's that have Jensen bass speakers have a more solid and tighter bass response. That's why when I get a 122 in for repair and it has a Jensen Bass speaker, I always recommend leaving it in there. If it's defective--open voice coil or a rubbing pole piece, I rebuild the original Jensen rather than replace it.

    The Leslie has 2 components that spin so that it sounds more realistic like the Pipe Organ because the Hammond was originally designed as a less expensive alternative to the Pipe Organ.

    Let me add to Jim's reply if I may. The upper driver found in most older models of the Leslie 122 is the Jensen V21. The lower bass woofer that is found in most 122 Leslies is the Jensen C15L. You will often find a Jensen P15LL in the 22H Leslies.

    Great presentation. I have a question though. In my studio i have a small Hammond S -6 that was given to me by a local Gospel Church. While it has a more restricted range than the B series, i want to know if its possible to somehow connect a Leslie into this organ? This organ is great for adding fill and range on recordings with other keyboards more up front. The Leslie could offer more tone to the sound. Ive seen guys even plug their guitars into Leslies so, there must be a way possibly? Thanks, keep up the informative vids here !

    I just bought a 1957 M-3 paired with a 44W Leslie. From archival documentation it was purchased on eeby in '02 and it appears to have had little use since. Don Leslie wrote that sewing machine light oil is a non-harmful substitute to service motors and bearings. I stole a Leslie Junior from a Thomas organ and am building a KUSTOM version Leslie (for the other M-3 I received previously in non-working condition with the main shaft of the TG's bearings frozen). I used high-speed bearing grease on the lower Doppler-shifter lampshade thingee and have had no problems. I think it makes sense to do that when you have it disassembled because the lube is durable and stays where you put it. What do you think of my reasoning on it? chrisinbigbear(california)

    In those days, any speaker or speaker system using Jensen was top of the line. I saved cash for a long time to replace the woofers in my large stereo speakers with Jensens....and they still pump out AC/DC to Bach, and everything else in-between from an old friend, MC 2100.

    I’ve had several 122 Leslie’s...Now I have a 715 that’s huge & has, I think, 4 extra stationary speakers in the mid-section...I gotta’ say, I like what I have better than a 122, but so many models are made it just simply depends on how you want your Hammond to sound...The 122 is “Sweet” though.!.!.!

  • @3DPDK
    @3DPDK 2 роки тому +1

    It doesn't really matter because the sound of this combination is distinctive and iconic ... but ...
    Less Doppler effect and more interference waves. Either you the listener or the speaker itself has to actually move to create a Doppler effect. The rotating chamber only directs the sound wave coming from the stationary speaker. It also alternately blocks a straight line path from the speaker to your ear. Once the waves leave the speaker cone they can not bunch up or spread out altering their frequency - no Doppler effect. What you hear is the sound waves reflecting around inside the cabinet when the opening to the sound chamber is not pointing directly at you. Some reflections interfere with each other, acting like a subtractive filter, while other waves enhance each other, acting like an additive filter (look up "interference wave"). Since the sound directing duct is rotating the two filtering effects create a vibrato - a "vibrating" volume (not a tremolo or tremulous frequency) effect. The frequency of the tone being produced does not change, but the harmonic structure of the tone does. What you perceive as changing frequency is actually reflected interference waves causing the harmonic overtones to come into and out of the overall sound.

    Man! I want so badly one of those! (but probably a 145, 147 or 900 model, with that type of amplifier that comes inside a 145 or 147). But while I can't afford to bring one of those to Brazil (or afford to find and buy one here), I am crafting something similar. I have built a big rotary horn and a small portable low rotor. Next steps are gonna be the small rotary horn and the big low rotor. For the big low rotor, I'll have some work with belt tensioner, balance, torque and speed tuning, which are different related to the horn. The other factors/features can be imported from the same project.

    @ToyKingWonder 3 роки тому

    You mentioned connecting this to a B3 or C3. Can it also be connected to an A-100? That is what we have, and obviously it has its own internal speakers. Is there a way to do it?

    • @KeyboardExchange
      @KeyboardExchange  3 роки тому

      Absolutely! Your A-100 can have a Leslie speaker attached to it, however, a proper kit will need to be installed by a qualified technician to get the best result and then you need to purchase the right model Leslie speaker. There are several ways to go about this and generally we suggest you consult with your local technician to see if he or she understands the parts required etc. We can provide a NEW Leslie 122A and have it delivered directly to your door. Another thought is to consider trading your A-100 in for a B3 with a proper Leslie speaker that you can hear and know in advance what it will sound like. Adding a Leslie to your A-100 has many unknowns. For example, is your A-100 up to its full potential, or does it require an internal restoration to obtain that potential. Then there is the kit installation by a qualified tech and then the purchase of the Leslie speaker. Trying to put all those moving pieces together with an unknown outcome can be frustrating as well as expensive and potentially disappointing. Our company exists to help you eliminate the hassles mentioned and provide you with a great instrument and possibly even a MINT condition Hammond B3 which is what most people want and may have settled for an A-100. Lots to think about! Where are you located by city and state or country if you are outside the USA. More information at: www.keyboardexchange.com

      The 5 pin connection is at the organ end but the 6 pin connection is at the Leslie end. These cables are called Leslie speaker cables and in your case it is a 5X6. Often a cable can be repaired if you have someone who is handy. Where are you located?

    • @alberttatlock5237
      @alberttatlock5237 4 роки тому +1

      @@johnbishop5316 the answer should be why not, the Leslie speaker was simply an invention to go with an electric organ, Hammond wanted nothing to do with Leslie and tried to put them out of business.
      Hammond himself had no musical ability whatsoever, he had already invented 3d films, the electric clock and a few other things and was looking for a product to save his then failing company.
      So experiments should always be tried, back in the early 60s people were plugging electric guitars into Leslie speaker's, some people were asking why, a few years later Fended made an amp very similar to the original Leslie and Leslie themselves also manufactured one around the same time

    These organ only have 40 watts of power, therefore they don't have alot of power and the overdrive of the tubes cause the organ to distort. The 122 is a great organ however, Hammond made a 222 that has the same internal parts as the 122 but in a fancier cabinet. The JR-20, HR-40 are the first speaker that was created for the sound of the organ however, Hammond made other speaker desined for other organ that can work as well, however the Solid state Leslie give more power and is more accurate.

    The 122 sound good but you get more speaker if you get the 710 leslie. The 710 is a rotosonic leslie. It has all the parts of the 122 but an extra speaker for the mid's. You can get the 710 for cheaper then the 122 because most people don't know about them or could not afford them years ago as they are the surround sound speaker of the rotor speaker sound. 710 has a bigger sound and is more reliable because it solid state. The 122A is not as powerful as the 710

      21-H is a single speed unit : off and fast. It also uses a different tube amp than the 122.

    • @KeyboardExchange
      @KeyboardExchange  2 роки тому

      The Leslie 21H is much older than the 122 model. A 21H Leslie can and will sound great when properly restored however parts can be challenging to source and finding someone to work on the 21H is also more difficult. The 122 is very much the standard in our modern times. The connection to the organ will be the same for both models so if you have a 21H now, a 122 would use the same connection.

      ***** That's called the scrim cloth cover,what that is used for is to isolate the aerodynamic noise you get from the rotor(wind noise)so that if you were to mic your Leslie you wont have a repetitive wind noise from it on high speed,other nice thing is it keeps the rotor from getting all dusty ,and the Leslie rotor will coast down a little bit longer from the added weight of the cover.the originally came with them the first Leslie 30A and all the others had them expect for the 70s Leslie 122's /147 with the white and the beige Styrofoam rotors

      +Sluff Adlin Measurements I have made both with and without the cloth ("scrim") cover show a marked difference in final RPM achieved. With the cover, the example I measured spun at around 270 RPM, without the cover, it was more like 180 RPM. So, it seems that the cover is there to reduce air drag at high speed.

      Sparky Marshall Interesting....One thing I have noticed and can hear in a lot of recordings especially from the 70's (and even live some live shows) a "throb" coming from lower rotor (which I find desirable). I'm not sure if that is a miking technique or the way the speaker is set up. Going to assume it's a miking technique but I can't get it from mine when recording, Leslie 251...Hammond A100.

    What is the difference between the 122 & the 147 ?? Leslie??

    • @KeyboardExchange
      @KeyboardExchange  6 років тому

      They can sound the same as each other. The main difference is that the 122 can only be used with a Hammond organ while a 147 can be used with many different brands. The motors in a 122 are DC controlled and AC controlled in the 147. Both are great Leslies! Hard to find either. We like to match the 122 and 122a speakers to our B3's (most traditional). The 147 we like to match with our A-100 series organs. Control kits are different so we like to standardize as much as possible. Same wood cabinet, same speakers, similar tube sets...they have much in common but are clearly different in a technical way.

      My first question to your question is who is the "they" to which you refer? If you got this information directly from the good people at Hammond Suzuki then follow their suggestions. We do not sell enough of this model to be totally up to speed to be able to give you a correct reply but willing to ask our factory rep the next time we are talking with him. Meanwhile if you have an owners manual that will be a good place to start your research and if and when you figure this out, please let us know so we can all learn together. It would seem logical that moving parts may require some form of lubrication from time to time unless everything is sealed. It will be good for us all to better understand and thank you for your question.....

    Just want to get clarity on something:
    Does the Leslie 247 rotors turn in the same direction?

    • @richardisley9063
      @richardisley9063 4 роки тому

      No. They rotate in opposite directions which is better for balance. Also, only one side of the upper rotor/horn is open. The other side is just for balance and is closed.

    • @scottbc31h22
      @scottbc31h22 3 роки тому +1

      On one speed model Leslies, (21H, 44W, 46W, fast/stop), the rotors turned in the same direction.
      On two speed models (122, 147, fast/ slow) the rotors turn in opposite directions.
      This is due to the fact that in one speed models, the motor for the lower rotor mounted under the shelf. In two speed models, there was not enough room for the motor stack, so it was mounted above the shelf, inside the middle compartment.
      Three speed solid state models turned in opposite directions.
      Horizontal models (or as Leslie called them Decorator models) such as the 222,247, or 351, the rotors turned in the same direction, if memory serves.
      Balance was not the reason for changing the direction. Most techs will tell you there is no audible difference.

      If you have a 1/4 inch output on the organ, you could use a TREK II combo preamp. With the TREK II combo preamp, you use use many different Leslie speakers. I have not seen the Farfisa you mention and I think it to be somewhat rare. It might be a good time to think about getting yourself a restored B3, C3 or A-100 to get the real sound you might want. Saud Cokjat Leslie manufactured a series of Leslie speakers with a 9 pin connection. We recently obtained a model 330 that is in working condition. Other models with 9 pin include 760, 900, 910, 925. There are a few others. I would suggest either the 760 which is the same size as a 122 but with black Tolex covering, or the model 330 recently received. Our 760 is currently hooked up to a Hammond Porta-B so either Leslie could be demonstrated with our Hammond Porta-B. Where are you located?

    What is the purpose of the little box in the middle compartment to the right?

    • @scottbc31h22
      @scottbc31h22 3 роки тому +1

      Some Leslies were equipped with a reverb system. The reverb played through a 6x9 speaker in the side of the cabinet.
      That 6x9 is inside that box. That box is to prevent the bass vibrations from interfere with the 6x9.
      Models equipped with reverb came with an additional amplifier (called the Reverb Amp) that was mounted on the top shelf, next to the horn. The reverb tank would be mounted on the center rear panel.
      Some cabinets came ready for the additional amp and louvers cut for the 6X9.
      I do not see the Reverb amp in this Leslie. The reverb system may have been removed (common) or may have never been installed at the factory.

      Replace the relay. The relay picks and holds thru a set of points if those fuse then it will stay in the high speed even though

      DO NOT attempt to oil the low rotor bearings. Oil usually makes the bearings worse.
      I clean and re-grease the bearings.
      Replacement bearings are available from Hammond parts suppliers,
      or
      they can be obtained from a bearing distributor.
      The bearings are of a standard size and are usually cheaper from a distributor
