Today I thought It would be fun to have a discussion on why people feel like they have ownership over their favorite artists. This is something that we see time and time again with music fans. They like to act better than others because they knew an artist before everyone else. I dunno thought it could make for some interesting conversations. I used Tyler, the Creator as an example. Happy that boy won a grammy we are all proud of you. Just wish it was for Album of the year and not rap album. Like, why the hell did Lil Nas X get a nom for album of the year. What a joke.... Anyway comment, like and sub!
when u asked "why is it that ppl feel ownership over their favorite artist?", that got my brain juices flowing, and my opinion on this, honestly, is that ppl who support that old era (not even of tyler, off anything) SEE these ppl who support this new era and KNOW that these supports are physical/clear evidence of CHANGE
which ultimately stems from fear, so its literally just ppl being scared of change, which is understandable cuz we're all human
what we have to do, is keep our mind open and just accept shits gonna change, even if its the stuff that holds so much value and meaning

I went to a Tyler concert and I’d say about 60% of the people there were like this. I honestly don’t get why they even still try because Tyler is clearly not an obscure artist. Like literally everyone knows about him and yet his fans still act like he’s some underground oddity
It is odd how people do that. Like, it’s okay to enjoy commercial albums/music. Not everything you listen to needs to be underground and obscure. Flowerboy went platinum and Igor won a Grammy. Haha How was the concert? I missed him on the Igor tour sadly.

@@UGGMUGG the igor concert was amazing. I was a brand new fan, only having really listened to igor. His personality and creativity really showed through which was something I had not found in an artist before. I love how pretty and aesthetically pleasing it is especially comparing it to his earlier work and thats really what spoke to me and got me into his music. It was cool seeing the diversity of his fanbase at the concert, young teens, college kids, older fans.
I like how tyler has said multiple times that his fans shouldn't think they are special but they still act like this
I think gatekeeping in Tyler's fanbase comes down to the obscurity of his older music. imo, it's much more common to see gatekeeping of an obscure artist than a popular one.
I agree! More mainstream artists their fans are just vibing having a good time.
I was dating this guy for a year or so and when we first started dating, him and his friends introduced me to Tyler. I think that’s when Flower Boy recently came out. I fell in love with his music, style, and self-expression. After a while of dating, Igor came out and I first listened to the whole thing in the shower. I was so excited to talk about it with my partner but he was grudgey and refused to listen to it, SOLELY because it was new. He was saying things like “his album sucks”, “everyone likes it I hate it”, and “I bet people who listen to this album don’t even know his old ones”. Dude wanted to gatekeep and was so upset that he was getting huge. That’s why I feel like most of his fans like that self-entitlement and uniqueness that “oh yeah no one knew him when he first started making music” like dude, that’s not what it’s about. It’s a GOOD thing that he’s growing and getting a bigger platform because he deserves it, that’s how artists grow. They don’t wanna be kept small.
Oh geez. Yeah, I dont understand why older fans can’t just be happy for their favorite artist hitting it big. I saw people getting mad that Tyler the creator won a Grammy. Which is sad. Tyler’s wanted a Grammy for a long time now, he’s been talking about it since Goblin. It’s amazing seeing things come full circle for him.

cherry bomb is probably the only piece of work tyler fans can objectively enjoy and not complain about other fans

i think it's so cool that you're bringing awareness to this, there's so many weird fans that think they're elite or superior to others just because they've been around longer or because their favourite album is goblin. i just wish everyone would care less about who's been around longer and come together on the fact that we all appreciate and enjoy his music

@@crazytigerspy9420 flowerboy is my favorite, than Igor, than wolf. Cherrybomb was to harsh on the ears and I haven’t listened to goblin or bastard get. Even though Wolf is 3rd it still probably has some of my most favorite songs from Tyler. (answer, colossus, IFHY, Tamale) all great songs.

Personally, I think Flower Boy is Tyler's magnum opus, and one of my favorite albums. Not just because it marked a huge evolution in Tyler's discography, but because there are just so many potent and relaxing vibes on this thing that I just love to revisit. I will admit that there is some merit to Tyler's older stuff (Yonkers is a banger, and Wolf is a genuinely solid album), but I generally prefer Tyler's newer sound, and that doesn't make me a fake fan. Every fan of an artist has their personal favorite era of them, and liking one era more than the others doesn't make you a "fake fan". There's nothing wrong with preferring Tyler's old sound to his new sound, but acting like the people who got into him through Flower Boy and IGOR are "fake fans" is elitist nonsense.
Sometimes I just think that people wanna feel special. It’s so strange to see people gatekeeping an artist that has worldwide acclaim ( minus a few countries that he got banned from😭😭) point is Tyler isnt a new artist, and he definitely still isn’t underground

like you said, i think everyone’s been guilty of gate keeping at some point, but as long as people don’t act fake and try to bandwagon, i couldn’t care what people listen to and i don’t think anyone else should either
realest shit ever, i feel like tyler fans and alt/indie niggas as a whole been on this weird ass shit, they feel like they’re unique for enjoying an “obscure” or “unknown” artist so whenever they see someone enjoy something they enjoy they feel like their originality has been stripped from them, also they have this weird thing against mainstream anything (ie that whole drake-camp flog gnaw situation and their new hatred for skinny jeans)
While ownership over an artist is fucked up, but i feel like tylers old music is definitely a teaching moment. The ppl who found him during flower boi could benefit from knowing how he grew as a person/artist especially given cancel culture. Like i have friends who straight up don't even believe he ever had a troubled past cause they heard igor and just ran with his current branding
Ive never told any of these friends that they have to go back and hear him say triggering shit btw, i just think its a perfect example that ppl can grow and change so maybe a celebrity or artist is in their bastard phase now but if you give them a chance to grow instead cancelling them, one day they might reach their igor phase

I think people find artists, or any creator really, during low or nostalgic parts of life and feel a personal connection to those early days, and the newer fans seem like bandwagoners because the art is more accessible/popular.
I knew about Tyler since 2011 but never actually listened to his stuff until 2018 and I pretty much like all his stuff except for a lot of cherrybomb

I see the same thing happening with Joji fans. I understand how great it was when he was Filthy Frank and Pink Guy but it really undermines his accomplishments and is detrimental when old fans gatekeep as if it is the right thing to do. We should be happy people also enjoy his music even if it was as a result of him leaving his old persona. The Filthy Frank era is nostalgic but it has long since passed and we must accept it. All these examples are applicable to Tyler and his fans in my opinion.
I think it is rooted in the fact that Tyler's earlier music garnered much more of a cult like fan base. This is bound to lead towards more than a musical appeeciation, it's incredibly more of an emotional and personal connection. Whereas when flowerboy came around, it was much more of a typical fan base that many artists have. There's a lot of casual listeners and very few religious listeners in these bases. And I think that struck a bad cord with a lot of the older listeners who came up on being against anything that was typical and normal. Personally, I can't stand to see when newer people come around purely for the aesthetics of being a "fan" and not for the actual music, and when you try to introduce them to his works previous to cherry bomb, they write it off as trash and raunchy. But that's just my two cents.
I agree with that sentiment. What I more mean is when a new fan comes in and older fans write them off immediately. I’ve sadly been seeing this more and more with MF DOOMS passing. Older fans are getting upset with these new fans checking out his music. But, honestly I’m jealous of new fans of any of my favorite artists. I wish I could listen to Madvillian for the time again or Mm.. food. But yeah, when people just use it to look cool or for aesthetic that is kinda odd to me.
I dont interact w/ ppl like this ever really but i see them fucking everywhere online. It occasionally would make me self conscious cause im like "fuck i did start liking this band after their one album popped off" or "i do only like the one really popular album by them" and id be worried i was a """fake fan""". But these days im more like "music is something i enjoy, its not my job" so i dont let it bother me anymore

Like are you gonna be mad at literally every newer fan? Just be happy someone you support is doing well for themselves. I personally am a “newer” Tyler fan meaning flower boy onward are some of my favorite albums ever, but I used to date this girl who another guy liked and he told her she should break up with me to be with him because I was a “new Tyler fan” and he “knew all his old stuff” and that actually blew my mind. Eh they can like what they like but that vulgar shit ain’t for me. Glad Tyler is growing and making music he enjoys and I’ll support him even if the music isn’t always exactly what I want it to be. Exactly! Seeing Tyler get a Grammy was a great moment. That’s thanks to the newer fans propelling Tyler to a mainstream level. I think more people should just celebrate good music together rather than pushing away new fans.

Ive been an fan of Tyler and Odd Future since 2012 and I get excited when theres people who are new fans and know the songs because during those years I barely knew any tyler fans irl and I love how he has evolved through out the years into what he is now like my fav album of his is wolf but I still like the new shit alot I dont like Golf Wang as much anymore because they come out with alot of basic designs and Tylers not in charge creatively as much anymore and you can tell the difference
I feel like fans feel special when they find artists that they relate to and then they feel like they know them. Then when other people come along they probably feel neglected in a weird but true way just like someone would feel if someone befriended your best friend, leaving you behind. Don’t really know any gatekeepers when it comes to Tyler but know some people who only fw pre flower boy Tyler and shit on anything related to his newer stuff.
But when it comes to gatekeeping I feel like the hyperpop community is the worst, they deadass tried to cancel pewdiepie for listening to the charli xcx pop 2 album. At least the drain gang/sad boys fanbase aren’t as bad even tho they rank fairly high on the music gatekeeping list.

the most recent example of this for me is 100gecs fans getting mad about people who found out about 100 gecs through the gecgecgec remix. tbh i don't think it happens as much with the hyperpop community because it's such a new genre that everyone who's a fan just gets super excited when someone is new to the scene. maybe this is the case with a lot of smaller communities.

Great Content! i love seeing these kind of videos, i thought this along with your other videos are really well done. Honestly i've never been that huge of a Tyler fan, i heard bastard maybe a month or two before yonkers dropped. Prior too this i was almost only listening to mainstream music. I feel like i used tyler's music/odd future as a whole to immerse myself into underground hip hop. And at the time i feel like tyler was at the epicenter of underground hip hop and skater culture. I think a reason why older fans may gatekeep him is because his newer music doesn't have the same allure, and isn't really rooted in the style of his first 3 projects. I imagine the older fans might think that his music will get washed out if the majority of his fan base doesn't respect, or identify with his older work.
i feel like it kinda does matter tho (not for tyler but in general) only bc especially now with tiktok and everything people hop on all the time on new songs and artists just because they want to be validated and accepted bc its the popular thing. ppl literally take music taste so seriously now and they generalize types of ppl over that sooooo much now

From someone who is mentally stuck in 2012 I can’t get down with flower boy or Igor not even cherry bomb,I don’t have a problem with “New fans” my problem is that some of the new fans try to claim someone who was a “OG” fan as a “Fake fan” because we don’t like the new sound of Tyler.That’s triggering because who are you to tell me what being a real fan of something is and you just found out about this artist maybe a year ago same with Xs fanbase you got the “Look at me” fans who try to call out others for not being with the wave from the beginning and the whole time they weren’t even there it just makes you look dumb as a “New fan”

i guess theres gatekeeping cus older fans feel like newer fans only like tyler because he’s popular, that they don’t appreciate tyler as artist and instead they see him in a materialistic way.
the old fans feel that the new fans don’t deserve credit for being a fan since they ‘jumped on’ with everyone else, while the old fans have been there for tyler because they love him for him, so when they see new fans it annoys them cus they think those new fans dont love tyler, they just want the clout of being seen as a tyler fan; it makes the new fans seem shallow to old fans, which is why they gatekeep, to “protect” what the community they had before the new fans came along
But they aren't making music
Tyler is only guy who's making music and he called out his fanbase many times but they won't listen
Tyler makes music for everyone
He doesn't give af on what others think about him
He just express himself in his music
I feel like also when someone calls out tyler for doing insensitive stuff, such as saying the f slur and saying "gay" means stupid, and also some weird colorist things hes said, his fans just call you snowflakes. As a result of this, tyler says his gay fans are ok with him saying the f slur, but as a gay person it makes me really uncomfy that he just throws out slurs that isnt his to reclaim. None of his fans hold him accountable. I love his music, but i wish our fanbase held Tyler more accountable.

I feel like specifically for OG Tyler fans they connected with him because he was an outcast who didn't care what other people thought and his fans resinated with him and OF heavy because of that. him always doing what he wants and giving a big F U to normalcy is what really connected the artists to the fanbase. for years people mad fun of Tyler and his fans, and since his new rebrand its brought the complete opposite of (almost) of the what his fans connected with. Especially now that his fans are full of teenage aesthetic girls, Id understand why his fans are gatekeeping. they're basically trying to hold on the the past and what made them love him in the first place. now I'm not saying I agree with the gatekeeping because i love that Tyler has finally learned to love his life and be able to do things bigger even outside of music, but I also understand as someone whos literally been following for 10 years why his OG fanbase would get upset. Ngl I def was gatekeeping heavy when flowerboy came out for a good 2 years, but I've grown to learn that there are people who genuinely love him even if they didn't get to experience his story like I did, and I've learned to put myself in their shoes and try and understand from a new fans perspective. I only got into tyler thru an online friend one day after I had previously only like earfquake, who dat boy, and yonkers, I can say now that I like goblin the most but igor is second. I do find it funny how ppl hate on new fans tho, never wanting their favorite underground artist to blow up sounds idiotic to me. I listen to so many underground ppl and all I can ever think is "How have they not blown up yet?"
