A meditative painting exercise for dark days

- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- In this video, I share a simple mindfulness art exercise that combines meditation and painting to help ease feelings of overwhelm, sadness, or creative block. By focusing on the sounds around you and translating them into art, this practice helps you reconnect with the present moment and your creativity. There's no pressure to create a perfect piece-just an opportunity to express what you hear through paint.
This exercise comes from the book "Drawing Your Own Path: 33 Practices at the Crossroads of Art and Meditation" by John Simon.

You're an open book, and what a lovely chapter.. Thank you.. You "are" the honest mind of the artist. I sincerely know how it can be. Artists certainly do struggle Christina. We all get lost and emotionally drained. Feeling uncertainty as an artist is like you're an autumn leaf just falling in the rain and wind backwards spinning not knowing what or where the wind may blow you too next. Be the leaf. Be fearless, Be Free.. Your personal Art journey has bloomed and will surely swirl you around with the seasons of your life. You must always continue creating at your best, and you certainly will. Remember your art has surely enlightened your spirit and changed your identity by now. Art is now forever intertwined with your soul and you know there is no going back from your true path now, Artist. There is a feeling that comes, I'll call "growing pains" as an artist. Be fearless of them, you are and will always be an talented artist creating incredible, unique, and inspirational artwork for the world, dont worry. So, maybe embrace these emotions sometimes, they too are connected within your honest voice as an artist. You might surprise yourself with what you will create one dark day and inspire even more! Perhaps challenge yourself sometime to maintain your artwork to your own personal standards throughout an unpleasant emotional times. It Builds up your artist muscles dude. Create a painting as a struggle and then work through it and overcome it. I would guess you've struggled through happy paintings as well. So, try to confidently Work through both ends and it will feel even more liberating to see a painting come alive! I know you wont be sad after that, you'll adore the painting and the feeling it gives back to you. You will feel the heal when your beauty is born from the dark.. lotus. You will cross your bridge. Experience yourself channel this into your most beautiful Artwork. Always believe in your abilitys no matter how sad you feel. I know your always aiming to help others and your doing such a great job of that, very admirable! God bless you and your beautiful soul! Note: I'd still not go over 3 days without at least moving some paint around lol it could be painfull. I know how extreme block can hurt and even make us sick. You have all the tools to overcome any challenge in front of you, even while feeling sad. You will not lose your passion for Art. Keep up the good work!! Thank you for all the inspiration!
I'm so sorry to hear you've been struggling. It happens to all of us, the best of us, as sure you already know. I appreciate your being willing to be so vulnerable in order to help others who are dealing with the same thing. I certainly have in the past and no doubt will some time in the future, because it's most likely inevitable. FWIW, I think you're an enormously talented artist.
Thank you :) yes, I hope sharing helps other artists feel less alone ❤️
Your videos are a gift Christina, thank you 🙏
Aw, you are so welcome!
An interesting and fresh idea, I may try this in my garden. I have had a wonderful week and couldn't be happier right now, but I still think this exercise would be a fun one to try. Sorry to hear you are feeling down, but looking for creative ways to feel calm and gain clarity is wonderful advice.
I agree totally agree with everything you said. 👍
Thank you, I’m glad you liked the idea! ❤️
Thanks for sharing this exercise. Definitely trying it out!
Wonderful, happy painting!
Everyone has hard times; it is part of the human condition. I recall, when going through a hard and unexpected divorce, and I had painted a detailed work, in gouache, of several hawks in trees. Which I still have to remind me I have a nice document of a time I had when "nothing else mattered except art" in my life. Take care everyone and have a nice year painting!! ; )
It’s inspiring to hear you found solace in your art during that difficult time, thank you for sharing.
@@christinakentart Bless you, have a great and prosperous new year! : )

When you suffer from negative feelings, know that you're not alone. And things will get better. In the meantime, that exercise will help. Thank you for demonstrating it for us.
So true! Thank you.
Responding to sound with paint is something I never considered and want to explore. Love your interpretive responses to your sounds and what colours you feel they might be.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy experimenting with sound and color 🙂
Thank you for sharing your feelings in this video. It’s nice to know even the best painters experience these feelings❤.
For sure! It's good to know we're not alone. 🥰
