After watching other people throw, all body types, for 10 years. Most people that play regular, throw between 275 and 325 feet. I know everyone on the internet can throw much further, just being real about it.
5 years into my DG journey. Almost 50 years old. This year began consistent 360 to 400 with stable high speed drivers. I can say there are dozens of aspects to a backhand form that will unlock distance and you have to piece them all together and burn them into your muscle memory. There is a mental aspect to this where you can visualize what your are trying to do in every aspect of your forn, understand what each little thing does, why it does it, and recognize when you are not doing it right, so you can make the adjustment. Take some video of yourself and I bet you immediately start seeing things you want to work on.
Drew Gibson’s tips for Brodie in the video they did on distance helped me. Drew’s advice was to “be an athlete” and explode when you throw. Working on form and smoothness is crucial but at some point you’ve gotta push.
I just started playing Disc Golf last summer and really got into it. I must say that no matter my form I was limited by my built up fast twitch muscle. One day I would work on throwing hard. The next I would work on form. The next I would practice my approach and foot work. Rinse and repeat. With tips like what we see here and from other pro players I am now throwing at 300+ feet regularly and getting out to 350ft at times. The more I throw, the farther I go. When something clicks I see a distance increase so I practice that. There is no "magic tip" unless your form is really screwed up:) It takes work.
It all comes down to form. It helped me to do field work with someone better than me. He was able to give live feedback and how to improve. There is also a difference between throwing a Zeus under control with not much fade 425 and throwing 480 with a huge full flex shot with a light weight hades
I’m 18 been playing for 4-5 months now (I played baseball my whole life so the explosive hip and arm motions are natural for me) and my best max distance throw is about 370 ish. I can throw for accuracy around 300-320 is. My best recommendation is generating power in your hips. It really helped me get the edge up on my friends who started playing with me with no prior sports experience where torque is required.
I’m 21 and have played baseball my whole life, I’ve played disc golf for 8 months now, and my max distance is 550 to 600 and accuracy for me is around 400. 4-5 months in, I was not throwing 370 max. I see big potential in you man. Only if I could play a round against ya!
I’m 5’5 and 37 years old. I started a couple years back. Man, why didn’t I start 10 years ago?! Lol. Backhand flat throw, I’ve hit 400 occasionally and 370 and up consistently. I’m realizing I’m barely generating power with my hips. I’m currently working on this. It’s tough but so enjoyable!
Look if you can throw 225 250 300 and keep it straight it’s much better than throwing 350 400 and being way off course. For the most part I believe the second shot is much more important than the drive
I played casually for years. Finally quit the drink, smoking, started focusing on my health more and hit 509 ft after about 13 years total of playing disc golf. I was 300ft, then 350 for years, then 400, then 450. Each bracket took a few years
I was getting frustrated with my distance but after a couple of us got range finders I realized I was getting better distance than I thought. When in doubt go to a local football field to throw. I believe its 360 between goalposts.
Kind of... actual distance is different than internet distance. I can generally throw around 360 ft actual distance, but around 460-515ft internet distance. It has become the norm to increase it online, so it IS exaggerating, but it's also become accepted.
Im 15 been playing for almost 8 months and have an avg max distance of 355 feet I hit a new pb of 363 feet (forehand) I haven't been measuring throws lately but I think I can hit 375 with the proper angle and disc
I'm 5'5 on a good day with shoes, I can throw a Frisbee (ultimate) roughly 120 yards. But I just reached 300 ft (100 yards) like last week. It would be awesome to hit 350-400 consistently.
We have a local pro thats 5'6" and goes 500 with fairway drivers. Fantastic form and understanding of wing and nose angles. You wouldn't expect it when you first look at him but then he just smiles and throws a bomb.
@Dave Munsie rough estimate. I can get from 1 end zone to another on a football field and if it doesn't sky too much pretty close to the back of it. So no world record for me.
I maxed out at around 420-440 about 3 months into playing this sport. That was 9 months ago. My problem was that I didn't have enough spin. Now I have the spin, but my form isn't buttery enough to put my full strength in to my throws. I can get a smooth nuke s curve over 400 almost every time, but I don't know what my next step is.
I'm putting a fraction of my strength into my drives now and am hitting the same max distance. But when I try and crank it I turn it over too far or throw nose up.
Dont worry. Break down you form into sections. When better: Sew the sections together (grip, arm, upper body, lower body, feet, disc release angle, disc release pressure etc) i went from backhand 280 feet to 420+ and forehand 220 to 400ish in under a year by doing this. But the secret to score well is the upshot and the putt;) Good luck this season from Norway;)
My advice, buy some high speed plastic in various stabilities and figure out how to make it fly. The "throw plastic that suits your throw" advice is not for serious players. Last summer I bought some 13 and 14 speed plastic, and at the time I could throw a Wraith just over 300 feet. I'm over 50 years old, 6'3" and 270 lbs. I could not get the high speed discs to stay flat or turn over no matter what I tried for the first month, but I included them in my field work. They require more speed, and most notably, more spin, more snap, if you will, to fly nose down. It really pushed me work on my form and alter my workouts and try different things. Now I throw 9-10 speed downwind and 13-14 with no wind for max distance, and 12 speed for max accuracy. My furthest hyzer is around 350, but I can throw an understable hyzer flip shot around 450.
You guys didnt mention a strenght training at all.. I started discgolf about 8months ago and I am throwing 430feet. I have been working my form alot and there isn't too mutch to improve. But I think that my backround in bodybuilding and powerlifting has had a huge carryover to the distance that I can throw and why my improvment has been this fast.
Ezra Aderhold and Drew Gibson would agree with you. But look at smashers like Calvin, Eagle, Emerson. Great form for their different body types. So I suspect that speed is also important. Conrad generates huge speed and spin which translates to greater distance quicker before gravitational drag begins it’s work on your plastic, bringing it down. Our football coach even gave us speed drills to keep our quickness muscles strong as well as the power muscles. Quickness must play a part in that whole body torque at a very high speed at the right moment. That probably varies slightly with each body, so that’s probably why so many have different forms and follow throughs. Plus timing that speed and power to get that snap at the right moment and angle. Just like playing a piano, practice until your body does it without thinking.
Calvin and eagle are long and lanky. So they dont benefit from it like a smaller Guy would. Also they have been throwing Many years.. I wanna have the 500feet distance under 2years Ofc the clean form is crucial as is arm speed. But my argument is that in order to develop it faster you need to have strenght training. + it helps you to not get injured
@@torfinnfuglestad2003 form, agility, fundamental stability. In a field I'm happy to throw a whole Football field. But it doesn't really matter on a disc golf course when you put 300 feet of power into a tree 40 feet away. Want to gain strokes? Work on your putting. Get good at long putts.
There is no normal. Its what's normal for you. Today I threw every disc speed 1-10. Then I only threw 7 speed. Focusing on elbow moving in time with hip shift.
