Game & Watch: Zelda (1989 Nintendo)

Game Artwork: Hydef
(Also playable on Game & Watch Gallery 4)
Link has to save Zelda by gathering all 8 pieces of the triforce. He must defeat the Goblin while avoiding the attacks of the Stalfos from beneath. Taking a hit from an enemy will deplete Link's HP by 1. If Link loses all his HP, he will be unable to fight and the game ends. (If you have a water of life in possession, it will automatically be used.) Defeating the Goblin will make 1 or 2 staircases appear. Taking a staircase will advance you to the next floor. After advancing to the top floor you will encounter a dragon, who spits fire and swings his tail to attack you. The best way to defeat it is to have a tomahawk. If you defeat him, you will earn a piece of the triforce. Collecting 8 pieces frees Zelda and you get the Ending. Pressing attack begins a new quest, where you have to do everything all over again. There is also a continue button. (Like Gold Cliff, it lets you start off from where you last died.)
It's truly incredible that they managed to fit a whole Zelda game on a Game & Watch of all things.
this aged well
Well thats because its the same thing over and over again but still pretty cool compared to the others
Hi, I’m from the future and we have a retro style Zelda Game and Watch with 4 games on it now. And a colour screen. 🤯
@@alexcharles8541 honestly probably one of the coolest little pieces a tech to come out in modern day history lol
Imagine my disappointment when this didn't show up on the new zelda game & watch. Just the mole game with link.
a GBA SP, + Game and watch gallery, + gameboy Link's awakening, + NES Classic Zelda cartridge, = winning. I suppose you could also use a GBA emulator on a modern handheld, but all the games and available on Gameboy Advance.
@@nunyabaznus7851 Hell, I could just emulate the damn thing on my phone. I still think Nintendo dropped the ball when they didn't add this game to the zelda game & watch.
Of course, the only way they could've managed that is if the unit had two screens, and apparently, it wasn't worth creating two screens just for one game. Nintendo really needs to re-release the game & watch series.
@@SuperNormalManthat’s not the only way they could have done it. There are 2 screen Game & Watch games on some Game & Watch Gallery games that were made for 1 screen game boys
man, the artwork on this one is incredible
Link had a freaking Tomahawk?!
And they just let that awesome idea collect dust for all these years?
Now you got me thinking, imagine in BotW you could use a tomahawk much like the boomerangs
@@aaronxgaming4042
I'm actually surprised it didn't have ball and chain flails, since several enemies hinged on them in the 2D games.
I remember playing through it several times a little sword icon appears in the bottom left corner when you amass 10000 points
Zelda was the final Game and Watch game to be released.
Edit: Actually, the final Game and Watch game was Mario the Juggler. The history list on Game and Watch Gallery 4 is wrong.
No, it was juggler mario.
@@zielcomedy188 hmm. I guess Game and Watch Gallery 4 had the history list wrong then.
@@vortexlord1127 They didn't have every single one
@@zielcomedy188 I took another look at the history list on Game and Watch Gallery 4. Mario the Juggler is listed on the wrong year.
ik this is 2 months old, but this technically is the Last Dual Screen Game And Watch, Soo your Kind Of Not Wrong?
This takes me back. Simpler times
I loved this as a kid my mother displaced ist sadly
Is it possible to end up at the boss without a tomahawk?
Yes. Its just a bonus you can find. It just makes the dragon easier
Foreshadowing of Tears of the Kingdom
honestly though. in totk you have the boss bokoblin, you have gibdos, and also you have to fight a dragon as the last boss. pretty darn close if you ask me. plus you literally get an axe head to fuse so that covers the tomohawk.
Well, looks like there's another!!
Whos here after the E3 2021 Direct?
I am.
so annoyed that they didnt put this in the zelda anniversary game and watch. like its still a neat system but that shouldve been a no brainer
Where does this fall on the timeline?
Maybe after TAoL? Or between TAoL and TLoZ? I don't think anybody knows.
Right before Skyward Sword according to Brian
Podrías explicar cómo se consigue jugar en pc?
Why isn't this game on the new replica?
where are the pots and chickens?
Z E L D A
This is one of the only lcd I want lol and can't wait till the new zelda game and watch comes out with zelda 1&2 and links awakening for Gameboy and idk why they didn't include this zelda game but they included vermin same with the mario one they could have did marios cement factory or something not ball but I do ball got nearly 1000 but just stopped I was tired haven't gotten close but also haven't really tried
I had this.
What emulator did you use? My old game & Watch us a stain on the center, in the lower screen...😢
MAME
Is this emulator on pc?
Yeah
@@old80s59 where did you find the rom ?
Lol Link has a tomahawk
This shit goes for 300 dollars more

First
It says the emulation is MAME. Can you give me the link where I can download the ROM?
I actually DID beat this without dying, too (finding all 8 pieces of the Triforce, on top of getting ALL of the items you’ll probably ever need). The highest score you can accumulate in this game is 4,050 points. I am not sure if this constitues as a world record, but I think that THIS might be one of the VERY frew Game & Watches to have a Hi-Score cap (and anecdotally one of the VERY few Zelda games to have a scoring system of some type).
WHY this was NOT included in the Zelda Game & Watch, but a reskin of Vermin ended up on there, I’ll NEVER understand. I can argue the same thing about the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch, too. Both games I think stand out right away, and would have been the perfect choice!
Oh, and P.S. I had NO idea the score would continue climbing after you rescued Zelda afterward. I smell a challenge...
Y’all might be like DAMN, THEY BUILT A WHOLE ZELDA GAME IN THE GAME AND WATCH SERIES? But if you were a hispanic kid in the 80s and asked for the new “Legend of Zelda 2, Adventure of Link” game for Christmas for your NES, you know damn well you’re parents would of probably bought you one of these and you died a little inside from the disappointment
yeah, i can see that, but still it is a cool thing to see like 30 years later after it was made
Or just caucasian and poor.
I'm not Hispanic but my parents were indeed poor. I was given this as a child and I loved it to pieces. I really miss it.
22:33 “And so, after Link killed the final dragon, he and the princess married, had tons of kids, and lived happily ever after.”
YOU MURDERER!!!
BOTW2 looks great.
Is this the first ever apperance of charziard
Were and how are you playing this I've been searching for years
Ok they could have had 1 more sprite and made Gannon the final boss after defeating all those dragons
Unfortunately, that's not how LCD games work. Game images/sprites have static positions, are either turned on or off (made visible/invisible) and don't overlap. So, considering the amount of space that the dragon takes up, there is literally no more space up there for another big foe like Ganon. Would have liked to see Ganon though.
I don't understand. Here are you can to lose? Or this inpossoble?
you lose if the skeleton or dragon scorches you and you don't have water of life
My ears 😢
Neat
This is nostalgia, for me.
This game is so simple yet so fun.
I really want one of these
How much you willing to pay I have one in immaculate condition with the plastic film still attached. I so not have the box though.
The final dragon fight(or maybe all of the dragon fights) in this game kinda have, like that musical rhythm to it, y’know?
And the goblins be like, “Congratulations, you killed me, here’s an item to help you on your quest” *dies*

How much it cost this game NOWADAYS?
