This song makes me cry 😭 when I see Burundian are fight each other they don’t know we have same blood umugabo wukuri agwanira amahoro nimuze twubake burundi 🇧🇮 bwacu atamuryano I won’t forget this song since muyovozi camp Tanzania
Oh my God, this song is amazing, I think this time all burundian must listen this song, ndibaza ko azutse akareba abagabo bari i burundi ubu, yabagaya kuko ibyo yabigisha ntibabyumvise, I really sad when i remember this country in 1980, I am a half burundian, even I live abroad, burundi remain my second country where I born.
Is there any way you could provide an English translation of what's being sung? And is this language Kirundi? There isn't much about this song or Canco/Canjo Hamisi online, but would love to know! Cheers!
Umgabo w'ukuri is kind of a double entendre because it can mean "A real man" or "A truthful man". So the songwriter goes on to describe what a real, true or truthful man is like. "Arangwa n' urucumu" means "He is known for his righteousness". "Arangwa n'umutima" means "He is known for his heart" and it goes on with beautiful qualities a man should have. i interpret Canco Amisi's songwriting to often be a counter-reaction to the macho man, strong man often misogenic man that some (or even many) Burundian men of his time were taught to be. He crooned really soft songs about love and tenderness, not only towards women but towards the fellow human at large. His songs were also sometimes patriotic in tone. In this one he sings "Arangwa n'ibikorwa bizomuteza imbere n'gihugu ciwe" meaning "He is known for his work/works that will advance both him and his country" and the chorus says "Akama agwanira amahoro ahari hose" meaning "He always fights for peace, wherever he is". I don't know much about him as a person. Not much to find online either as you said. You'll have to visit Bujumbura and buy a casette from the marketplaces that still sell these songs. What's interesting though is how East African music from the 70's and 80's has had a real influence on modern American alternative rock bands. Vampire Weekend and more recently Ariel Pink have admitted to copying the production style from this era. Beautiful and unique lo-fi tone on those guitars and a cool laidbackness in his vocal delivery. Make sure to spread the word about these awesome forgotten gems!
Thank you so much for translating. This song is incredibly beautiful, but Google's not too great with Bantu languages yet, I guess, so I didn't know how poignant this was until you translated it.
Oh my God, Oh my God, l'artiste burundais préféré des rwandais dont je suis. Cette chansons a bercé mon enfance et c'est un plaisir que de la réentendre et d'avoir enfin de visu le célèbre Canko. Umugabo w'ukuri was a smash hit, Rip Canko you were truly One of the greatest if not the greatest...
#ImBurundi and have hope that one day the man sung in this song will raise up- men of integrity, men and women of truth, of peace and justice-----where are you? Time is now. All of you who love unity let's unite for peace and justice. Umugabo nya mugabo yama avuga ukuri- speak truth and fight for peace FOR ALL.

RIP brother Canjo ... tu vas nous manquer pour toujours . J espéré que là où tu es, ils apprécient tes chansons à leur juste valeur. Merci pour le message y umugabo que tu nous a legué.
I am very happy to see a new generation raising up in Burundi. I grew up in a town next to Burundi, while in primary school three of our colleagues went to Burundi to smuggle cigarettes. They were caught and come back with " scarifications " on the forehead. The security forces have tortured them and "put" imyotso" on them .Those were primary school pupils selling cigarettes. Someone told them ,in Burundi you can get them at a low price . How wicked one can be to do such act on a child... ? Thank God a new GENERATION is raising up in Burundi . During my university years ,l saw "live," Canjo amisi performing with AMABANO .We need " ABAGABO"s in the region of the great lakes
