I’ve seen two episodes and I’m hooked! Great series “The Forger’s Masterclass” with John Myatt, former art forgery painter. Myatt is an excellent narrator and teacher, both to the students and to the audience. Well Done! And Thank You.
I'm here too binge watching this awesome stuff so many Golden nuggets for artists ! Both externally and the internal struggle of painting so neat to watch him pull that out of them!
I've lived in many different cities across the country & visited many cities across the world. I always check out the local galleries, and its been my experience that the local galleries prefer artist who know nothing about painting because they sell to people who know nothing about art. It is rare for me to find something in a local gallery that I like enough to lay down my money.
Thank you. I'm going to watch all these videos because I should be able to paint because my uncle and father were both artists. I make textile art, and now I'm going to try painting. ilona
As far as I can remember...we were told that the Fauves didn't use white or black mixed with other colours to create light and shade but to use the colours themselves eg green or blue to indicate dark . So warm colours indicated light nd cold ones dark.
Why has this not been a long-running BBC program aired by America's PBS??? It's wonderful! I'm so glad I found this video, and have subscribed. Off now to try applying paint to my "Fauvistish" drawing, feeling brave, bold, and beastly. *applause*
fantastic, both my grandparents were artists and i grew up with copies of all the greats hanging on the walls, my grandmother was particularly good at the french impressionists, the family has credit with a large art suppliers to this day for a handful of copies traded for credit
Just love it, John! THANK YOU! This series really gives me a kick in the ar..e, after a period of stagnation and even coming to a complete stop with painting. Nothing is disclosed about the kind of paints being used here, though. As a matter of fact I have no experience with oils, having mainly used acrylics plus gouache and egg tempera earlier on. I'd be grateful for further advice.
I like the style very much - it has a very embodied feel to it - its like a kind of Music of colours dancing and yet telling a story of place and mood - its a very interesting way of investigating the intertwining of bodymind-place - Thank you for the episodes
Amazing, I learn a lot. I'm not an artist, or shall I say a daily Sunday painter, copier of various famous painters. Thank you to propagate your knowledge and skills. In the future I will try to learn more of the painters themselves. It is even more interesting.. Pierre
I'm absolutely loving this series... In 1981 or so, I attempted to copy Andre... Because...I cant draw...i love to paint .. And I'm ecstatic about color. I loved this very much.
Derain actually did a whole series of paintings, mainly of river scenes, when he visted London. Check em out, I personally think they are his best work.
she was, but when you are a child, you are always trying to 'get better' become 'more realistic' and once you get to that point, it's very very hard to 'regress' again- it goes against everything you've strived for- and it just 'feels wrong' to do it- it's very very hard to embrace and allow the 'wild beast' to take over- because your mind fights you the hwole way- most people anyways-
I feel like the two women were closer to painting a Fauve style than the guy. The man added way too much detail, but yet, the whole point of painting in this way is to paint simple shapes, with some small strokes to show detail.
This series is just right. Though I would like another series in addition, showing John Myatt painting in different styles & describing what and why he's doing. So we thoroughly get to know the artist through his artistic choices...brush strokes, colors, etc.
Right...they do that on ALL of these kinds of shows now. Even cooking shows. Why????? Do we really need music playing while someone is stirring? If the host is interesting enough their presentation should be enough!
Wearing sunglasses is pretty clever; it let's her see only values (what's dark/light) thus she's not so influenced and tempered by the actual colors that are there. Know what I mean?
Am I the only one who feels like the showing of his prison drawings is a bit awkward and even borderline unpleasant? I know that's kind of mean, he did his time and has ostensibly repaid his debt to society, but do we really need to be reminded of that throughout the series? If he has truly moved on, then why the re-hash... Just focus on the art - it's not like we couldn't use more time of the students themselves in the show! ;))
What happened??! I thought the brunette's painting at 20:43, when it had that huge red blotch in the upper middle right - that was brilliant; and it seemed the teacher thought so as well - why then, at the end, was it TOTALLY different?? The red had been absolutely erased, and what was in its place was... like all of the paintings ended up being: quite underwhelming... :( I was really disappointed overall and don't believe any of the artists truly captured the feel of Derain (whose work I had never seen before, but I really like this one).
Into show two I realized he's not letting them do their own thing. He's telling them everything to do. I realize he's a teacher but don't like that part as it becomes not their attempt but their attempt through him.
@@dougg1075 I can see both point of view - I see the importance of his instruction. though I do feel he may be being a bit too "helpful," as in, I feel that he tends to put too much of his personal influence/ opinion onto the student; as opposed to just nudging them in a certain direction, he is half-way moving their feet for them as well.
It's a time thing. If you have a student for days, weeks, semesters, etc.. then you have time for them to find their own way, get off course and make mistakes and learn and develop their own path. But if you are trying to squeeze it all into a half hour program, then there's going to be a lot of hand-holding going on. In fairness though, John's not really a teacher. He has a vast knowledge of other artists and techniques, but kind of lacks the ability to present those to students in small enough chunks they can digest it and make use of them. I've met many great artists and many great art teachers - very few are both. Having said all that, I like John's videos very much and have watched them all. I'm trying to help my daughter with a school project about Fauvism, and this video might be exactly what she needs.
He is a true fake! He is making money selling crap to footballers. Look at his series painting celebrities and endlessly going on about his two minutes in prison,he had to bail and bring on a pre painted work on about half of the episodes.
I would cover one eye and loose all sense of depth. Then I'd think with the rage of a bull and pull out red. Then I'd draw the sketch with my weak hand. Then I'd drink 1/2 bottle of wine and listen to gigues. Then I'd use the wrong end of the brush to apply, then the hairy end to jiggle it about.
Who is this geeza to say "that's what he would have done"? How would he know? Artists tend to be unpredictable, it is a little silly to dismiss his technique as "this is what he would have done"
How could three from England dislike London? Feel it like I did in 64. Three days and off to Scotland. I could feel the beastly dislike of London. But, Detain...his work so great. It's a shame he let Nazi's corrupt him. Thanks again and again for art taught for the lovers.
Interesting series. Andre Derain's style... nope, not my cuppa. My question, could he have painted realism, or was his so--called talent purely infantile?
He’s a very interesting character and due to his amazing sense of observation makes a great art teacher.
indeed, being a skilled forger helped.

Shame he can’t do. this type of thing on his own personal youtube channel. If he has one
"really a good painting is just a successful exploitation of a series of mistakes!" John Myatt Love this! Really there are no mistakes. Only learning.

The most interesting people in life seem to be constantly defined by the phrase ... "Just do it." Love this series.
true🤔
As far as I can remember...we were told that the Fauves didn't use white or black mixed with other colours to create light and shade but to use the colours themselves eg green or blue to indicate dark . So warm colours indicated light nd cold ones dark.
This piece is freaking awesome.

wonderfully entertaining yet informative
I think that Andre Derain picture is Brilliant! Thanks for uploading these episodes! Cheers - Mike
Too right, Jim!
Yes, my favorite work I've seen on the show yet (aside from the van Gogh, but that's a class of its own, imo)
fantastic, both my grandparents were artists and i grew up with copies of all the greats hanging on the walls, my grandmother was particularly good at the french impressionists, the family has credit with a large art suppliers to this day for a handful of copies traded for credit
LOVED this! Trying to "let go", so hard...

Great video series I really really love them.
The asian girl in the first episode would've been the perfect candidate for this one...

Bingewatchting these episodes and uta cracking the artistic block i feel tye passion being reignighted

I think all 3 of them captured the spirit of Durain! ah yes badge of authenticity jail card.
I like his critique of their work and the info on the artist. Great
Love the way you give instructions!
Hard to do Derain without it coming out child like. Not a fan of his but love this show.
Thanks! really enjoying these.
Alannah was really struggling to comprehend that it was supposed to look child-like, or naive. That was the point.
she was, but when you are a child, you are always trying to 'get better' become 'more realistic' and once you get to that point, it's very very hard to 'regress' again- it goes against everything you've strived for- and it just 'feels wrong' to do it- it's very very hard to embrace and allow the 'wild beast' to take over- because your mind fights you the hwole way- most people anyways-
Alana is absolutely gorgeous. She's the true work of art in this episode.
It definitely takes confidence in your painting skills to paint well.
I LOVE MODERN ART!
I like the biography on old masters that you give...
I feel like the two women were closer to painting a Fauve style than the guy. The man added way too much detail, but yet, the whole point of painting in this way is to paint simple shapes, with some small strokes to show detail.
I likethe doggie
great series
id kill to go on a show like this
i get his point of covering canvas its to bring out boldness in your personality i like this hope he ll cm to india
Haha nice *Velvet Underground* sticker at 9:50 ;)
If i could give a suggestion, i think they should have just done a series of him painting and that's it.
Well how dull! I believe we learn more from mistakes, others' included.
I say Bob Ross it
This series is just right. Though I would like another series in addition, showing John Myatt painting in different styles & describing what and why he's doing. So we thoroughly get to know the artist through his artistic choices...brush strokes, colors, etc.
I wish I had all those paints and brushes haha :)
Love the series, but the repetitious techno piano reduces its watchability.
Right...they do that on ALL of these kinds of shows now. Even cooking shows. Why????? Do we really need music playing while someone is stirring? If the host is interesting enough their presentation should be enough!
A lot of these shows need less intense music and just less music and more actual content. Let me see them actually painting not just progress points.
Man, I wish I hadn’t read your comment before I watched this. 🤨
Derain Derain
Great
what type of wall paint is he suggesting to use?
First video I've seen without him saying many negative things about the artists...
because they are painting like children
Lol. He wasn't THAT critical in the Renoir episode, iirc
how can someone paint with dark glass on the face?
Um, pick up a brush, dab it in paint then push it around on a canvas.
use emulsion paint?? cool
Who knew Theresa May can paint
I love fauvism....
good
Jason's pai ting was the best. Gail had too much help with the lower corner to say hers was the best.
Great. Thank you.
Yes, there are many worse things to be called other than Picasso!
Yeah, like "my little butt buddy" in prison!!
Esp in the klink!
That looks nothing like the actual Charing Cross Bridge that Derain painted in 1906. 🤔
why is this guy painting with sunglasses on how can u see
Wearing sunglasses is pretty clever; it let's her see only values (what's dark/light) thus she's not so influenced and tempered by the actual colors that are there. Know what I mean?
@@atlantic2233 yes, i love painting with sunglasses, it brings out the FUN!!!
All three better than Derain's.......
I'm not a fan of fauvism so I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
if you need to be told to use cheaper paints rather than thinking of the obvious option yourself, then maybe his advice is perfect for you.

That the the whole idea of this series, somewhere you miss the point.

The worst forgeries I've ever seen are John Myatt forgeries or copies. Whoever believed his work was genuine needs to go to specksavers!
Into show two I realized he's not letting them do their own thing. He's telling them everything to do. I realize he's a teacher but don't like that part as it becomes not their attempt but their attempt through him.
Carolyn Brt what would be the point of him being there?

haha I can't stand this guy -_- his "art tip" is a quick talk about housepaint, that leads into a talk about his jail time. grrr.
He is a true fake! He is making money selling crap to footballers. Look at his series painting celebrities and endlessly going on about his two minutes in prison,he had to bail and bring on a pre painted work on about half of the episodes.
i like this series. Helps me learn about relevant artists.
I love your enthusiasm,Your knowledge of the art of paingn, your personality, you talk and work with your heart. Well Done Thanks
Where are you ? I miss these classes and looked forward so much to seeing them. You could do many more artists for your classes. Please come back!
So easy to learn from, very well presented. I love his modulated voice as well.
he has a wonderful controlled voice
John is truly a great pedagogue. I would love to know where he picked up all his incredible knowledge. Love all your videos. Thanks!

lol why do they always have an airbrush guy in his 30s, a hobbyist older lady and an art school girl in her 20s?
When to stop is always an issue. Mix that with the courage to start and I have such a great time painting. Yikes.
It would be quite difficult, imo, to have that time limit as it is--one day?! Yikes!
haha nailed it
Alhana just copied Jason throughout!
im trying to copy Paul Gaugin art....
Derain was probably consuming local wild plants.mushrooms. that painting is LSD before LSD.
Tony M or maybe simply colourblind and inpatient
@@lindahl458 HA! good luck from one starving artist to another.
Maybe he was starving?
this is my favourite of the series. great shows. i think this is my favourite period and ive started copying derains fauvist styles.
Allana, her painting is very Matisse. Jason's I love it, wonderful. Gail's painting, is Fauve totally. love it.
I don't get the old style frame. The old lady did beat the young guys🙌
Fauvism
, inspiring. Freedom to be yourself on canvas.
Why do you keep having them use acrylics to do oil paintings? This frustrates me every episode.
Great series! Thanks for uploading! Big fan of Myatt!
Yup Gail's was a Derain- absolutely- most like his-
This is terrific stuff!
Would love to take an art class with John Myatt
After watching several episodes,,as,an erstwhile painter, our host has a genius: his abity to deco structure the PROCESS ande.otio al auotient
e.otiomal quotient of each practitioner,. makes it clear why forging. was the serious way. to demonstrate his enormous gift...
I will set the wild beast free!
The guy did extreamly well

I love that he has the Andy Warhol’s banana on the wall . I assume that he took it away from the velvet underground album cover.
Solo veo una persona que quiere hacerse propaganda:-(
What if he faked his time in prison
Huh? Lol. Im pretty sure he has some tats to prove it.
I don't get how you can be an art student and never heard of derain, fauvism etc
Interesting series. Andre Derain's style... nope, not my cuppa. My question, could he have painted realism, or was his so--called talent purely infantile?
The host said that Derain changed to a classical style later on.
yeah...bloody well go for it....
Man id love to give something like this a go
I tried everything else, may ha a go at this
Absolutely love this lessons!♥️
Another great episode!
gail
thanks.
give them bigger brushes, good lord
Bahahahahaha, why dont they have their own fing brushes?
