    Love the look and sound of this. I run the helix rack through a PA at venues and rely on the monitor wedges for some stage volume. Not always the best! I’m curious how this stands up to the new Laney LFR 112 which is like stripped version. I like the idea of being able to run a DI out the back of the cab to the PA so you have the best of both worlds. Any thoughts?

    Subscribed! I'm thinking this would be perfect for live playing, disable the internal cab, use the speaker sim on stage and use the XLR out to FOH and I believe it that XLR out has a mic sim so FOH is getting a miked up cab signal. Best of both worlds!

    • @GearZombie
      @GearZombie  6 років тому +2

      Thank you for the sub!!! Yes I do believe it does. I've been having so much fun with being able to mic it that I didn't try the XLR out yet. But in the editor it does have mic sim options. I also like the idea of not using resources in the modeler for cab sims. Gives you extra horsepower to do other things!

    I have a POD 500x and love it! Running into a fender 100 champion bypassing preamp. Is this a huge upgrade in sound or what?

    • @GearZombie
      @GearZombie  5 років тому +1

      So, the 100 Champion is a 100 Watt 2 channel 2x12 with built in effects. And you're just running it as a power amp and cab basically. As far as upgrade in tone. The helix IMO is way better than the hd500 alone. As far as the power cab goes, it is a true cab emulator. I think you'd have to try it out and see but as far as i'm concerned the helix with the powercab is a killer combo.

      @edruiz1202 5 років тому +1

      GearZombie thanks for reply. I’m not running it in front of amp I’m pretty much using the speakers from it. And the helix is little too much for me, price wise and too much equipment. I use it for country so only need couple cool tones.

    Hi! Great Video!

    • @thekweez
      @thekweez 3 роки тому +1

      I don't own one, but like the concept and from what I've researched the 112 is plenty loud enough (250 watts / 125 db) and more portable due to size, but if you want to run in stereo the 212 is your best option.

  • @ShredRexGuitar

    I am on the fence on this one. I am a tube convert, and I love my helix. My live sound i am very happy with...we have 2 L2T speakers and some floor monitors and the helix sounds great through them. But yet something is always lacking....I want to believe the speaker models in the powercab will solve that. But just can't seem to get there. I guess I need to get one and try it for a few days at home and if I am not thrilled return it.

    • @GearZombie
      @GearZombie  6 років тому +3

      Here's my thinking. I don't know that anything will ever replace the organics of tubes and cones completely. But I feel that present day modelers are there sonically. Of the ones i've used being most all the Line 6 stuff and Fractal and a few kemper test drives. The sounds they produce are good enough for me. But yep that on stage thing stinks. I used qsc k12's for a bit, and Alto's all that belonged to friends and were all what everyone was using at the time. Yep they sounded fine but not like a cab. This feels much more organic to me and being able to pop a 57 on it is fantastic, something you can't do with a PA speaker. And even if you don't feel this is 100% the experience it's 35lbs and affordable. At $799 for the plus street price it puts it right with other decent speaker solutions that don't have the IR's and Sim options. I think if someone thought it was off a hair from a real head and cab that gap is filled quickly by not carrying a ton of heavy gear and once you're playing with the band the sonic differences wont be there either. If you try one, let me know what you think!

    • @ShredRexGuitar
      @ShredRexGuitar 6 років тому

      GearZombie I grabbed the lower end model today...not plus. I haven't had a lot of time with it but first impressions were not good. No bottom end when using my regular settings by comparison with my Alto TX12. Not overly powerful or loud, and the speaker sims are so thin I don't think I can use them. I am gonna have to dig in deeper, and might post a video to show the difference I am talking about.

    • @GearZombie
      @GearZombie  6 років тому

      That's unfortunate and not at all the experience I had. Most of what I do is tuned low and I found it to be plenty loud and bottom end. I do dial my tone in very mid rangey however. Hopefully you get it dialed where you like it! But if nothing else, thanks for commenting back I genuinely like to see others opinions on stuff I post.

      @MrLivebynight 6 років тому +4

      Sounds like a gain staging issue - that is one place where Line 6 could be clearer in their documentation. My guess is that you aren't using a hot enough signal to the Powercab, which seems (from anecdotal reports) to like a certain range of hot signals to sound good. Just crank your modeler's output to where the light on the PC is lighting up orange occasionally, perhaps peeking into red, to see if that is the issue.

    I recently purchased the Line6 Powercab 112. After turning it on I've noticed allot white noise/hiss coming out the speaker. Is this normal? I don’t have experience with “normal” amps or cabs. I play my Helix LT trough the studio monitors…

    • @justinTime077
      @justinTime077 3 роки тому

      Are you using noise free cables? Line 6 Link, Trs, or XLR ? Other than that, yes, often these PA /FRFR things tend to do that.
      I hate that, I haven’t tried Powercab, but I did put Celestion’s F12-X200 into a similar powered cabinet from tech 21 (Deuce Deluxe), and I didn’t have white noise issues. If that PC+ really does pump out the white noise I’m going to skip trying it and get another F12. That was simply good shit.

    How does running your IR's or cab sims through the "Full-Range" mode sound? In other words, not loading IR's into the cab, but using IR's on the modeler into the Full-Range mode of the Line 6.

    How does it sound with low volume? Can this be a home practice cab or not?

    • @GearZombie
      @GearZombie  3 роки тому

      Yep this works pretty great for that. Since with a regular tube amp you have to consider pushing the amp a little bit to get tube saturation and then even harder to get speaker saturation, in modeling situation that's all accounted for. I use this a lot when I want some room volume to just play and not wake up the family.

    • @Jeedan
      @Jeedan 5 років тому

      I use a 1x12 and powerstage and my opinion (ive tried the powercab though I dont own it) is that I prefer the powerstage. Both because i find the onboard eq more useful than speaker selection, and because its more versatile- if you're playing a gig where cabinet is provided as backline you can just bring the seymour duncan rather than your own specialist cab. The powercab can change speaker sims, but it can ultimately not be a 4x12.

    Nobody seems to explore the “mic sims” that are in the Power Cab Plus. What do they sound like? After all...if you use the Power Cab XLR direct out to feed FOH at a gig, doesn’t the mic modeling get added?? Confused as to what I’m actually hearing when people say “Power Cab DI”?🤷🏻‍♂️. Nice video otherwise.👍🏼

      Biggest difference is the ability to load your own IR's. Here's the quote from Line 6. What’s the difference between Powercab 112 and Powercab 112 Plus?
      Powercab 112 Plus adds the following:
      2-inch, 128 x 32-pixel LCD display
      128 user preset locations
      128 user IR locations
      MIDI In and Out for recalling presets, IRs, and most parameters (can also be recalled via USB)
      AES/EBU | L6 LINKTM digital In and Out
      Additional input for use as an FOH monitor (post-DSP)
      Powercab Edit connectivity
      USB audio interface for jamming along with or monitoring backing tracks from your Mac/PC/iOS* device
      User-selectable mic modeling and distance on the XLR output (Powercab 112’s output uses an SM58 model only)
      Powercab 112 Plus is about 2 lb (1 kg) heavier

    • @neilxify
      @neilxify 5 років тому

      GearZombie The ability to use the L6 digital link between the Helix and Powercab 112+ will presumably eliminate a digital to analog conversion at the Helix and an analog to digital at the PC+, but I don’t know what value this has. I assume it would make a difference to sound quality.

  • @funfreq9282

    Good demo if the heavy thing is your deal! but nothing for the clean, standard gain/edge of brake up guys. It seems like Line 6 has always always leaned towards the gug gug buzzy fizzy thing. Where's the warm edge of breakup or chime and bell like tone of an rolled back AC 30? In my opinion these are the hardest tones to get right from any modeler using any type of speaker.

    • @AndrewBonicaRR
      @AndrewBonicaRR 5 років тому +1

      Fun freq did you personally play through a Helix using the Essex A-30 model into a Powercab using the Essex speaker model? All the die hard AC-30 fans I know say it’s spot on. Give it a try. UA-cam audio is never going to replicate playing and feeling it for yourself.

    • @funfreq9282
      @funfreq9282 5 років тому +2

      @@AndrewBonicaRR I had a Helix and an AX8 when they first came out, obviously before the power cab so no opportunity for me to try the Power cab back then. I liked the helix especially the front panel interface! The tones were good but not quite as good as Fractal. I have been using FAS gear from day one (early 07), so I'm still kind of partial to it. Modeling has evolved greatly which is good for everyone. I stayed with the FAS AX8 and CLR combination and I am happy with it. I do however want to try a Power cab just to give it a try as I do like the concept. The low gain tones and especially AC30 chime are harder to get but not impossible, though I did find it easier to get with the AX8 with the CLR.
