This has to be the best DIY cord holder EVER. Outstanding thought process and a good tutorial on drawing the thing up prior to cutting. I would suggest prior to the round over bit, you should make a template out of masonite or something similar for future use. Trying to figure out why I never saw this one before. Must have been off UA-cam for the last couple years... LOL

A coiled cable when working on higher current could heat up due to Induction and could damage the cable insulation over a period of time. It could even start smoking due to heat.

I love and NEED this so much. I own a mobile pet grooming service, so Im plugging a heavy duty extension cord from my bus to the house at every single stop, 5-7 times per day. I just bought a 50ft cord because i only need to full length of the 100ft cord about once a week. Rolling the thing up as i walk back to the vehicle is a nightmare and i dont have 5+mins to roll to perfection. Where can I buy one of these? I dont have a skillsaw to make my own.

@@jaradat -- Wrong... Cables are rated for a certain amperage assuming the heat can dissipate to the surrounding air. When you wrap it in a reel, you are interfering with the heat dissipation and you can end up with a melted mess... I saw it happen at a community center where they were having a fundraising fair in the parking lot. One of the booths had a popcorn maker like you might see in the movie theaters. He figured that he didn't need the entire extension cord, so he left the portion he didn't need wound up on the plastic reel... Everything melted and no one notice until the smell of burnt plastic drowned out the smell of the popcorn...
It is not just the length of the cord. You must also consider the gauge of the wire. If it is a 16 ga vs a12 ga or even a 10 ga cord. I would suggest rolling it up to about the size you want and measure the cord length and the diameter of the whole mass of the wrap.
@@PawPawsWorkShop I made the U cut out 100mm (4in) X 100mm and this was enough to wrap the 50m (164ft) 10 gauge extension cord. The length of the handler is 600mm (24in). When I made my first one I did find, because the 10 gauge wire is rather stiff, that it might kink in the cut out when your starting your wrap so when I made the second one I inverted this cut out and that worked better. I want to say thanks for posting this video. All my cables are now neatly hanging on the wall by the French cleat instead of lying on the floor. One poster mentioned not to router one of the holders and therefore it can be used as a template. That’s a good idea.

Using a extension cable while rolled up can cause it to catch fire one should aways unroll the full cable before using.

What would be the dimensions to make one for a 50m (150ft) lead?

What is the cleat for?
The cleat is so that I can hang it on the wall using the french cleat method. It is cut on both ends so that it do not matter how you hang it up.
add a feature: cut a clip for the ends so you don't have to slip inside the wound cord

"folding the cord in half" makes a weak spot.
Wile that is possible, in fifty plus years I have not had a cord failure due to this method. (Knock on wood). Thanks for watching
