    I appreciate the use of the stock military tire. I once asked Victor my school bus driver why he "drove across France" on a bidirectional tread. "So the enemy can't readily tell which way we went".

    I love these old jeeps. They still hold their own in most scenarios. They could use a pair of lockers though, but that goes for most 4x4s.

    Miss my father Willys Jeep after watching this video. Maintaining the engine, gear box, whatever mechanism this iconic vehicle have was a Art. Good to see people are still keeping in shape. A hardcore Grandpa of all off-roaders we have now.

      Yeah, there are literally Army Jeep road queens everywhere these days...at the mall, parked outside of Starbucks, going through fast food drive thrus. Teenager girls doing their lipstick in the mirrors at stop lights in old 1941 Willys. You know she ain't taking that thing on the Rubicon trail. It's enough to make you sick.

    The old Jeeps used within their element are a very capable vehicle, I collect and restore US "M" series Military trucks so I get to spend a bit of time on logging roads with a bunch of buddies with WWII Jeeps its amazingly fun to watch but these are all fully restored to way better than brand new condition and I have never seen anybody push things, not even a little bit!

      Admittedly now that I look at this video, I can't help but frown at all this. If I were a GI, unless there was an absolute need to do this, I wouldn't put a vintage jeep through all this. Then again, thats just me. I'm not a GI, and I have to say it wouldn't surprise me if the GIs back then had to do stuff like this! It's just in this day and age, I'd be babying my vintage jeep.

    Off roading on NDT's, now _that's_ bravery!! :)
    I always liked the look of the rope on the front. I bought some cheap 2" manila rope to hang on the front of my CJ-7. I wrapped it on and spliced it in place since I wouldn't use it for actual recovery.
    Hopefully you can find some period attachment points to put on the front. I suppose those, and factory winches, are probably as rare as hen's teeth.

    99% of the GIs (general issues) in WWII had never even seen a 4WD vehicle, let alone driven one. They must have been dumbfounded at how much more capable a WWII jeep was compared to anything they had driven before.
    OK.Two questions. 1) How does the Freedom Drive II system on Patriots and Compasses compare to stock WWII jeeps for overall off pavement capability? Same question but if you take mud out of the equation i.e. how would they compare (for capability) if you only drive them on primitive (unimproved) backroads when they are dry?

    • @l337pwnage
      @l337pwnage 8 років тому +2

      4wd had been around for a long time by then, but it was rare because it normally *doubled* the cost of the vehicle back then. Imagine if that was still true? Even back in the 80's, I remember most trucks still being 2wd, now it's hard to even find a 2wd truck.

    Can't beat the coolness factor of a WW2 Jeep, but in reality they don't work anywhere close to as good as a modern Jeep off road. Glad to see some people not afraid to get them dirty though.
