As an actor & an artist you take on the role you agree to do without any discrimination otherwise, what is the point of taking on any role. Good response from Benedict Cumberbatch. I only watched the film once but it was enough to make an impact & put a few things to question but otherwise it was an interesting story for the time period & the choice of actors were well chosen for the roles they played. Well done everyone.

If you’re portraying a character to audiences, it doesn’t matter what is going on around that character - you owe it to the audience and that director to portray that character, be they Gruff Ranch Owner or Sorcerer Supreme, with as much authenticity and integrity as possible. Also, do everything as if it were the last time - double amen to that 🙏

Definitely! He was offered to portray a certain type of character. Shady, complicated, manipulative characters aren't everyone's cup of tea. They are not always mainstream either. That doesn’t mean the actor has to modify it or tone it down by ruining it's originality - just to be acceptable to the mass. It was a job and he was committed to it. Character like Phill is very real and he played it just too well. Benedict Cumberbatch should play these types of roles even more. Totally suits him!

And my question for Campion would be - Don't you think a great director could have more imagination and be an effective filmmaker without having to actually show animal cruelty?

It's perfectly fine that she doesn't like superhero movies, but at least four of the actors in her movie have taken roles in them, so her comments made the press tour for Power of the Dog pretty awkward.

It's bullshit to say shoot 'em up slaughterfests, or everything filmed in front of green screen, that relies on atavistic ignorant stereotypes, can be artistic. You can't separate film and art because regardless of genre, art films in numbers are required to make and print a cinema film. But film which seeks to edify and tell the damn truth are another kettle of fish. Of course Cummerband cannot afford to bite the hand that feeds him, but he took equity fees for plenty of roles; that's where critical acclaim and awards lie. Not in green screen.

I’m not a marvel fan but marvel movies LOOK harder to make. Everything in movies like ‘power of the dog’ is practical. You don’t have to IMAGINE anything. MCU has an actor with a green screen and you gotta imagine a whole mess. No thank you. 🤣
I definitely see where you are coming from but I think the marvel franchise movies are much much more formulaic than something like the Power of the Dog. The former definitely requires a gigantic skill set and budget (and yes is far out from our normal human circumstances), but the latter requires a certain vulnerability and inner searching to make which I don’t think can be seriously said about a marvel movie. It also requires a lot more nuance as a director

Everyone is singing its praises and I was bored.
For me it’s about the quality. Wether it’s a blockbuster or independent film I look for a good story, amazing actors, cinematography, and the soundtrack. I do enjoy good special effects, but they’re not really important to me to appreciate a film. Actors should never have to choose one or the other either. Well said Ben.

There was actually quite a bit of cgi in the Power of the Dog for the cattle and many of the buildings.
