I've never thought garbage collection would be that complicated in so many ways. Just launched the game after couple years and, OMG, there's so much going on right now! Thank you for helping to understand the garbage system.
15:20 My personal tips for "multiple small containers" are these: 1) Sort only things that make sense; with houses usually only that matters is biowaste. 2) If you have higher volumes (like from Dnipro flats), more evenly spread containers help to "spread the load" as multiple stands in reach will fill at the same time from different buildings, thus prolonging the time between "half full" (TS truck assigning) and "overflowing" (pollution creating). Not having just one stand for biowaste, second for mixed, third for metal etc. helps this; instead make all of them with double metal, double plastic 5-7 biowaste and rest mixed waste. 3) For even higher volumes it is optional to have only mixed waste in one and all sortable things (except aluminum and hazardous that do not emerge normally) in another next to it. This also reduces the amount of trips for each vehicle. But these "doubles" I tend to spread in densier living parts with high-density buildings, as simple "7 biowaste + rest mixed waste" is a good enough setup for basically all city stands. 4) For large-throughput buildings a road-connected big containers stand (at least the 8-container type) is a must to maintain effectivity. Generally speaking about shops, hotels, hospitals and large universities (and of course all industries). 5) I completele second the "waste-collection yard" idea. That is the best way to unclogg your customs, reduce driving distance of small trucks and to prevent pollution from happening. With added DO near it, there should not be a huge accumulation of waste anyway (just set DO to load from 5-10% capacity and it will go with full container all the time). If your stands fill more than 20%, you have a problem in your setup (either not having a target for that type of waste or something stuck in the chain after this station). Use this as a buffer to solve the issue quick ;) ________________ All in all, thanks for the testing, BB. I like these and I really didn´t knew that trucks either pick from buildings only or from stands only. This was new for me
I feel like the garbage collection with small trucks is seriously broken right now, pathfinding is just terrible and your example shows it well. In my cities I only use big containers because of that, they create a lot less traffic (there is nothing worse than trucks wanting to turn around at every crossroad all the time) which is basically the main concern when a self-sufficient district grows over 10k pop and has some road cargo and buses going through it. And since garbage trucks are driving less, the fuel expenses are much lower too, as well as the overall amount of trucks and their wear.
One thing I found out today: You can actually link up garbage collection stands to lines, and thus get garbage collected without using the technical services office at all! I figure it might well be worth it for mines and ore processing plants, those really produce tons of garbage. In my current game I'm going into steel production next, starting with the coal production, exporting it until I get to use it for steel. I just got the coal mine started, and my technical services quickly got overwhelmed. Next, I'm setting up a dump with a railway just next to the garbage collection stand, and make a dedicated line loading garbage at the stand and unloading it at the dump for rail transport elsewhere. That way, the garbage truck will only travel the short distance between the garbage collection stand and the dump, rather than go via the technical services.
11:30 "Now they are keeping the city relatively clean" LoL - after more than half of the city already died on pollution (from 6k pop to 2,4k pop) it is quite natural for garbage trucks to "be better at overall waste collection". But I doubt that it is the best demonstration of garbage stands effectivity :D :D
Nice, to the point and helpful... I didnt know the thing about the road nodes... I built less footpaths when I tested this... ;) Maybe this actually leads to it being optimal to have a big street through the center of the city, because more other services (secret police, police) also work similar to this. By the way, I think a small container stands needs to be 50% full for a waste truckt to get sent.
Like you said, the logic for garbage collection is calculated only at road nodes. From there it looks like it follows a simple pattern 1) Pick up trash from closest garbage (Prefer garbage stands over buildings) 2) If full, go to drop off point. Otherwise, repeat step 1.
Interesting that the routing requires nodes but realistically they exist even in a mostly path based city. I would add that one of the easiest efficiency gains is simply to build a transfer station (about 3-400m away from the city as it can cause pollution). Limits driving distance for pickup trucks, removes need for them to visit the border and therefore doesn't really matter if they are full or not. Then you can empty that with a DO that has big garbage trucks which will only ever be taking full truckloads to the border/waste processing facilities you have built. It can also be quite useful to keep small garbage stands in the city as it creates a hard separation in your republic between citizen waste and industrial waste which you often want to deal with differently.
thanks for the video man, with this i learned bog standard trash collection is not under the WASTE rap, but infrastructure and then maintenance. 1 hour of screaming at my pedestrian trash cans being full and apparently impossible to empty finally over.
This game has some really awesome ideas and mechanics, but is built on a very poor roading/pathfinding system. I really hope that the devs can fix this, or even just create a sequel from the ground up, learning from the mistakes
And what to do if i have big stand for big containers for my steel plant and my technical services with trucks for big containders don't go to collect trash? They have place to get mixed waste off and everything is connected
One or more of these things: a) wrong type of vehicle collecting it - you need the big container truck to load waste in big containers, little "citytrucks" won´t do jack b) wrong collecting building; for building from left side of the menu (with white symbol in their icon picture) you can collect with TS only; however from container warehouses from RIGHT part of the same menu (no white icons and having factory connections) you can load ONLY VIA DOs. c) If you have the right vehicle in the right building, you probably miss something else, like - not enough trucks - target area is not selected/is full - vehicles without both fuel and refueling option in reach - residual waste of different type onboard of waste trucks, so they do not move Check this and come back for more if needed ;)
I am not that stupid... They have everything... They even goes and take that waste. But there is 24 containers, 18 of that are still full even when trucks are idle in TS. I have more trucks than I need but they do not getting trash off
wow, thank you ! The road node thing explains why I'm struggling with trash in one of my cities that mostly relies on foot paths. Maybe this also explains why I partly solved my problem by installing small big container garbage collection points (partly because I got fed up with the small ones) on the road : It added collection points for big trucks and at the same time made new nodes for the small trucks to decide to turn back ! Anyways, I went the route of "install small big container collection point along the roads, install big footpath small container collection points inside the path networks". Maybe I'll design my new cities with more road connections and see what happens ? maybe also test with big road small container collection points as well.
I have a residence that my garbage trucks cant see. Its over flowing and they will drive right past. Has yet to be picked up once in game. Have placed nodes everywhere. Can you think of anything I could be missing that would cause a building to be invisible? Does not have road connection.
It's it invisible because there is another trash collection place in range? Or is it a mod that requires a road connection? Or do you not have suitable truck to pickup that container size??
@@bballjo Removed all other trash collection near by, no mods and this is small container mixed. Do the trucks only see one node ahead? Meaning if the bin is hidden behind several nodes could that be it?
@mjr7991 hidden behind nodes, probably not, but if there are a lot of places to go, then it's possible this bin is always at the bottom of the list, because algorithms...use collection stations to reduce the number of places to pickup from... eventually they should get this one
Hey, I'm looking to build an industry off scavenging imported waste and recycling it to produce more valuable resources for internal consumption and export So far I've got a separation station up that's clearing out most of it but I'm starting to notice a lot of biowaste and fertilizer left over (with some other things mixed in I can't recall off the top of my head) and I can't find a way to separate the two Can I just run it through the composter and trust them to sort it out or will that gunk everything up? Also, is there a way to separate Burnables from everything else? I'm considering the possibility of burning trash for heat and electricity, but I don't know if I can do that without having to burn things that could be more valuable when recycled
First: it's no. Worth importing waste and running it through your separators...it works with small volumes of hazardous waste if you can get a high enough concentration, but you cannot move enough waste to make it work. Second: you can only separate what the separation plants tell you, if they don't (like biowaste) then it won't be separated, the compost plant will also not accept mixed waste, as the input is biowaste, not mixed waste. Lastly... didn't I just give you the suggestion of not trying something for the first time in your real save? Go and try things, it will give you much better answers than some yahoo on UA-cam...
@bballjo Weather update in case you cared at all, uhh I've been crunching the numbers for a bit, and Idk how I did it, but the operation is actually turning a bit of profit Even when accounting for the increased fuel expenditures associated with hauling all the garbage in, the aluminum scrap tends to pay for the cost of import and transport on its own Though after having looked through the books for a bit, I can see why you said it wasn't really worth it. The profit margins are pretty slim, and when taking into account the cost of building more facilities, it takes so long to make a return on the investment that it's not really something I can run an entire Republic off of It'd be more trouble than it's worth to take down all the infrastructure at this point, so I'm just gonna leave it as it is, but thank you for calling my attention to this. I will have to be more careful about such things in the future.

This is so frustrating. I have both stand for small and big containers. everything is full of trash yet these trucks just do not move. I also selected the overlay to see the trash on the building like on your video (04:13) but the little trash icon did not appear. If I highlight a small truck and try to click on a small or large walk-in container stand the container is red and I cannot assign the truck to it/them, what is happening?? - I do have a separating plant and so I create steel, aluminum, and sell those at the border. I store the bio waste and the hazardous waste and burn the rest. I also import waste to process it and get $$. What do I do with the ash? The bio and the hazardous waste? my storage places are getting full! I follow your suggestions for the plant with conveyor belts to storage and the burning plant and than uses trucks to carry things around. My next republic I want to try using trains, so I am binge watching your videos on train stations right now! 🙂
Small trash... assuming you are using an appropriate truck (trucks are either for big container or small, never both) then the TS should just be able to pickup trash from there if there is a path...you don't need to assign anything. Ash...that's the final product of trash, and will disperse over time...you may need several ash storages to have enough surface area for them to disappear fast enough.
@@bballjo Thank you. I think I found the flaw: not all path cross an actual road so the truck never enter some paths.! Ok I will create bigger surface areas.
