  • Dealing with stress is difficult, even more so the older we get. But it is so very important to keeping our bodies strong and able to fight off illness, such as BP.
Here's my story... I hope no-one can relate to it, it's not a nice one...but like any great story, it DOES have a happy ending :) And there are still many more great things to come, I know!!!

I ran into your videos while wondering what to do myself. I have had BP for 4 yrs now. My face, at onset, looked just like yours. It is wonderful to see how well you have recovered 2.5 yrs later. It gives me some hope. However, the feeling of knowing there were others out there going through the same thing and thinking and feeling the same way, has given me some strength. Thank you for making these videos!

I just wanted to tell you how helpful, informative and inspirational you and your videos were for me while I was suffering w/ bp.They gave me hope in a time when I thought I would never get better. I had originality had bp in 2009 and recovered very quickly. In September 2011 after giving birth to my son it came back with a vengeance this time my recovery was as slow as yours was.I have not fully recovered but just like you I am happy w/ what range of motion I do have. Thank you for everthing

Thank you for your comments. I'm one week short of a year with BP. I was whacked pretty hard and have some continuing problems. At least I'm no longer scaring children away. My poor wife and son have had to stare at me through all of this and it has been maybe, more difficult for them than even for me. Hopefully my eye and mouth control comes back..but things could be much worse. My best wishes to all of you who are struggling with this nasty afiction.

I know how bad stress is. I'm married, living in Michigan (not my home state) - away from old friends and family and my husband of 7 years and I are retired with 3 dogs (small Pups). He is not very supportive or caring and causes me alot of stress. I am trying very hard to hang in there...and get through this and you have certainly been a HUGE help at that.

I could not agree with you more. I developed Bell's March of 2011 after being told my job was being eliminated in April. There is absolutely a STRESS component of which the MD's are very ignorant of. I really appreciate your updates, it got me through most of my problems, although almost 1 year and I too have residual (my eye and a little in my mouth.) You did the general public a HUGE favor! Thank YOU

I'm on my fifth month with bell's palsy and I am pretty sure, as you are, that it has a LOT to do with your emotional state and the stress you're putting yourself through. Bell's palsy happened to me after a very stressful period. I am a PhD student and I have been trying to finish my thesis for a very long time (5 years). However, things always got in the way, from taking care of a sick aunt to receiving my mother's guests at home, work, others people's issues, random projects etc., someone or something else was always a priority and I was really angry that my life project was always left behind as it didn't matter. That's when I got it. I felt I had hit the bottom, a total failure, and for a while my recovery was almost none. I started noticing recovery when two things happened: I acknowledged my mistakes as necessary in a learning process and started acupuncture. Now I am not completely well, but doctors say I'm at 85-90%. I hope I will finish my recovery and my thesis in the next few months. I truly hope you finish yours too. But you are beautiful either ways. Thank you for sharing your story. I'm glad you are happy now :D

This actually made me cry. When you said "Your life will get better too." I so know what you mean about stress being a factor in this. I did get very sick beforehand with a bad virus, BUT my stress level had been very high for months beforehand and brokenhearted right before it happened. This months makes one and a half years since it hit me and I have leftovers as well. Such a hard thing to go through, but between this and I see you on Facebook and you look super happy with your family. My life will get better too...I hope! I am just recently starting to feel somewhat like myself again, you know? Not so exhausted, but the face thing definitely gets me down. I'm really needing to accept my old face isn't coming back, but it's okay! Do you ever stop feeling it? You know what I mean? I think because it's been so cold here, it's that tight painfulness past few days. Anyway, I'm babbling. Thanks for making this video, really needed to see it today :)

Patricia 😘 thanks for watching and commenting... these videos remind me of how much I really have been through! Sometimes I amaze myself! But I really do believe that “your life will get better too!!!” Stress sucks, but our society sees many things that are stressors as normal... so we live in a constant state of high stress! It sucks, and breeds illness! We need to stop the madness!!!
      And to your other comment:
For me, I still see all my facial imbalances every time I look in a mirror! But to be frank, that is just who I am now! I squint when I talk, big deal! I can’t smile evenly, so I turn my head for photos! ;) my eyebrow took over 12 months to begin moving again, but now it has full range of motion! It’s mind boggling!
Girl, we should really DM, PM, Chat sometime!!! 😘

That's more encouraging than what I've been hearing thank you for that. I have an MRI on my brain in the morning as I went to see another Dr to get another opinion to rule out anything they can't see if there is something there. I currently have a buccal space mass in my right cheek that I'll be having surgery on in 2 weeks. they say it has nothing to do with the Bell's palsy but everything is just attacking my face it feels like. I appreciate your advice. I'll update ;)

You must have the most documented, and most severe case of BP I know of. Certainly on youtube anyway. I have heard of people not recovering whatsoever, but never seen anyone, or any footage to confirm or deny that.
It's awesome you shared so much. You inspred me to document my case. I almost feel guilty for mentioning it, as its literally nothing compared to your case, but I just added a video showing my journey from day 1 until now.

I was born with a cleft lip and palate, and have had 11 surgeries to correct it. My last was in December 2001, and I awoke unable to move most of the right side of my face. Only recently have I heard about Bell's Palsy, as my doctor at the time clearly felt no need to let me in on this issue I was having, and I've been doing regular facial exercises ever since in an effort to counteract the effects of this. I've gone through many of your videos and really appreciate your sharing of your story.

Glad that you are still making videos on your progress. I am 5 months in with Bell's Palsy and I've been going to Physical Therapy since I was 2 weeks out. Mine was brought on in my 3rd trimester with twins due to inflammation. I'm about 80% better thanks to this therapy called "VitalStim" provided by a speech therapist. I still have residuals about the same as you with a little bit of synkinesis, which I read is a natural way of your body healing. Hope you'll always keep us posted.

    Hi,
I got Bell's Palsy when I had a constant stressful job situation for about 2 months. Also I was not happy with my wife at that time. I had a super bad case of warts on my feet and I was using weird cancer cream to get rid of it because burning out warts did nothing. Burning out part was painful and stressful.
I believe in my case I got it because of stress.
Recovery is very slow. Over 6 years now and now I'm 80% back to normal.
I learned to deal with stress and have a positive outlook on life. I think this is the best medicine. Facial exercises help to.

When I first found out what I had was Bells Palsy back in December 2011 , I was heartbroken. For three months I had absolutely no movement on the left side of my face. I was 6 months pregnant with twins. I now have Synkinesis and go for Botox every 2 1/2 months and do physical therapy. This has helped me so much. I was thankful to have found your videos. Hi, I just wanna say that I have had Bell's Palsy now for 4 yrs and 4 months. It was also a shock, never heard of it. My onset was very slow but since I did not know of it, I would brush it off and tell myself it was probably this or that. Till a co-worker who had Bell's Palsy for 8 yrs told me, she thought I was getting it. I cried, I was scared. Dr. did not do much for me. Needless to say I have the same residual as you. I was a Construction Project Manager who was nursing a 6 month old baby dealing with a jealous husband due to my job (Construction) and the stress of work, a recent root canal and just emotionally and physically trying to keep myself together. I was such a happy person. They used to call me Smiley or Smiles all the time cause I was always smiling. Now I don't smile much.6 months after my onset I was still fighting it with exercises and B12 being positive. Went through a divorce and then lost my job, then I went into a deep depression because I could not find work and I always thought it was because of my Bell's Palsy. I commend you for your positive attitude. Now I've moved on, it's not as bad, slowly recovered but I have the same residual as you. With occasional cramping along my jaw when I laugh alot. Trying to figure out how to deal with that.

make healthier choices, my face was starting to recover. I won't lie I've gone through depression despite putting on a brave front. But like I said, I'm still here just like you're still here.
Glad everything is going great in your life. I've also met someone a year after my diagnosis and he's the best thing that ever happen to me! We're getting married next year. When I ask him about my smile, he said it's the prettiest smile he's ever seen.
Hope to see another update! :)

I haven't watched all your videos yet, but here is one of my questions since you are fitness instructor. I know you had to relax and such, but I just want to know how often and how strenuous were your work outs or did you completely stop your workouts for a while? Thanks for your inspiration again.

Great video 👍 Thank you so much for sharing what you went through to get to the point of having Bell's palsy. I got it only five days ago and the day after I went straight to the emergency department in the Hospital. They wore great. Did all the tests to eliminate the possibility of stroke.
I live in England so we have free National Health which is FANTASTIC. The Doctor at the Hospital gave me a medication to take first thing in the morning before breakfast to protect the lining of my stomach. Also gave me strong dose of steroids for ten days and I have to take it after breakfast. Eye drops to apply every 3 hours on the affected side. I started the facial exercises and I am very positive about my speedy recovery. Lots of love X❤❤ Anelia

I want to let you know that I've been watching your videos from the very beginning. I was diagnosed with BP almost 3 years ago. It was one of the most traumatizing times in my life. But now, I'm still here... with a crooked smile! I've gone through the same situation as you emotionally (overstressed at work, best friend's wedding, constant dating issues, taking diet pills) before BP! After I got fired from that job, the wedding stuff happened, decided to stay single, and started to (cont.)

you look really well now, congratulations. I had bell's palsy about five years ago and still don't feel myself. Did you ever have issues with vision and the muscles around the eyes?
Also, i really struggle when i go to a bar or somewhere where its loud and i have to speak loudly, i find my mouth will struggle to pronounce words. Anxiety and depression is now a big thing, i used to be realy confident so that sucks, havent had a girlfriend since it started.
Did you ever try electrical stimulation?

I'm sorry to hear that you're spouse isn't supportive. My husband has been and I don't know how I would be getting through this without him,so my heart goes out to you. Just remember a positive outlook makes a huge difference and stressing will only delay your healing. Wishing you the best x

8months on, I walk, run, lift, & have started serious training again to regain muscle I lost while in a coma. I cant fully feel my toes yet. I suffer Neuropathic pain & damage. Hyper-sensitive pain at that. The intensive care unit doc said "you went through the WARS!" but I survived. No matter what life hit's us with, if you're a fighter, u will battle on. And u are clearly a fighter sweetie. Push on, and things can only get better. 1 good thing about B.P? how much cooler a wink have we got! ;)

Hey :) You've done so well in your whole recovery, I have so much respect for you! I am on day 3 of a thankfully very mild form of BP, the condition fascinates me and I'm reading up as much as I can do try to understand it fully. Is this video reversed compared to your earlier ones? It seems like your BP side is the opposite side..?

Everyone heals at their own rate. My face HAS gotten better with time. Best possible progress is recovering 100%... most BP patients do, but some do not. We are all created unique!

I got bells palsy in 2008, but today the whole left side of my face is weaker than my right side.. You can see the weakness of the muscles on the whole left side of my face. I don't know what to do so my face will get back like it was before I got bells palsy. When I lift up my eyes, the right side of my lip also lifts up, like its connected. HELP

I have bells palsy for the 2nd time in 5 years! this time is much worse than the first. I'm miserable. it's very painful especially behind the ear and face. I get daily headaches and im extremely sensitive to sound in one ear. I'm seeing a neurologist but they said there's not much we can do to correct it. I was told it's extremely rare to get this condition a 2nd time so needless to say I'm not really hopeful at all.

Please Tiffany, don't listen to that doctor! (I mean, listen, but don't take it personally!) If you join the BP support groups that have formed on Facebook, it is actually very common for people to get this multiple times! You are not as rare as they make it out! I hear about re-occurences all the time from people who contact me and others in the groups! Don't be discouraged!
Get lots of rest, take the pain meds you've been given... and know that this too shall pass! But your body is sick and needs down time to heal!
