September 19th 1943 Guy Gibson VC best known for being wing commander in the 617 squadron flew from this RAF base in Woodhall Spa and never returned, the circumstances surrounding this crash has never been clear.
I also go into the woods to explore the abandoned remains of RAF Woodhall Spa.

American and I remember as a young man building a model of the Dam Buster's Lancaster. This video greatly affected me and brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for your hard work!

My late father was a Flight Engineer on Lancasters in the RAF and there was a very strong rumour doing the rounds that Gibson's plane was sabotaged. The feeling was, that he had become rather superior in his attitude and stepped on too many toes ...

Gibson flew a tour as a night fighter pilot in-between his bomber command tours. He was alleged to have flown behind allied bombers in a effort to test the alertness of the RAF bomber gunners. A highly dangerous practice as his twin engined mosquito resembled a lot of twin engined German night fighters, especially in the dark.
There were no flak battery claims for a/c shot down in that area on the night of Gibson's crash, nor were there any German night fighter claims of a/c shot down in the area that night.
A rear gunner of a Lancaster did make a claim for a a/c shot down in that area but, there were no German a/c missing in that area of Holland on said night.
In all likelihood, Gibson was shot down in a friendly fire incident. The Lancaster rear gunner was told to be quiet about the matter, only after the war did his story come out.
As the Mosquito was primarily made out of wood, I would not have thought there would have been any tangible evidence of bullet holes etc, especially after the high speed impact and subsequent fire. I would imagine that the only tangible remains left at the crash site, would have been the engines, perhaps undercarriage parts etc, that would have buried themselves deep in the soil The remains on the surface would have been cleared by the Germans at the time.
Exactly right. Gibson was shot down by a Lancaster bomber gunner, 17:27 Sargent Bernard McCormak who mistook the Mosquito for a Junkers 88. He spent the rest of his life wracked with guilt and left a taped confession with his wife before his death in 1992. Was it right to keep quiet about it? Well, Gibson was a national hero and to loose him in action was bad enough, but for him to be shot down by one of his own would have been a bitter pill to swallow at a time when good morale was crucial.
What, or who, is a Chief Wing Commander? I have not heard the phrase before and am interested.

Hey thanks for the very kind words, I don’t get down about sub’s I have pretty good self motivation the last year the videos I’ve been important mentally and I made a goal of a video a week until I wasn’t shielding anymore (didn’t think it’d be this long 😂)

Hey Gary, I would love to do that - but the biggest ghost stories seem to be from RAF Wickenby and it’s still an active RAF base, they all have their ghosts but that seems the most active.. I will do it some day.
I did Lincolnshire ghost stories over Halloween, check it out if you like.
I might do RAF ghosts for next Halloween.. although, with another lockdown I could do it in a couple of weeks 😂
