    Thank you for this guide. I noticed driving at night was super tiring and I realised my headlights were only lighting up about 3 car lengths ahead of me... found a carpark with lots of flat space to a wall and found the left was dipped 4.4cm per metre, and the right by 6.7cm per metre! Adjusted back to spec (1cm per metre) and it's worlds better. Thanks again!

      I am also in Sydney with a very similar age car to yours (EE*), if by any chance you want the Taptes woodgrain centre console wraps, I'm happy to give you my second set! (they give 2 in the box)

      Thank you very much for the offer. I've already wrapped my centre console with a matte black one so I'm good, keep it in case you need to replace yours in the future =).

    There are 2 (in Europe) critical things you missed.
    1) You need to have the car on ground that does not change elevation - flat is ideal - but otherwise constant slope. See note on how to do this.
    2) In Europe we have road sign illumination , that is the upflick of light you are adjusting which means you must align the car exactly so that it is perpendicular to the markers on the wall, since the back wheels define the direction of travel of the car and hence the alignment of upflick light illumination direction as a function of car travel.
    To perform both of these tasks you ideally need a laser level which
    1) you put align on the rear wheels, checking the centre point of the front tires - and mark on the wall the incident point - both sides of the car.
    2) You can then find the exact centre point of the car based on its running direction from the rear wheels.
    3) You can find error of wall height measurement based on the laser level height at the rear wheels (how far is it off the ground), how far the front wheels differ from this height, and the offset at the wall you need to add/subtract from your 60cm height of the beam. Ie this 60 cm beam height is a function of the beam drop from the normal ride height of the car from the lights (70cm) to the wall after 9.5 meters to 60cm.
    I can see from your video that you steered your car to avoid the pillar which mean the car is no longer perpendicular to the wall, so your road sign upflick of light will be misaligned left/right. I can also see that the underground garage has an expansion joint/drain between the car and the wall which often means the 2 sections of concrete floor slope in different directions for drainage, in your case , setting the beam too high.
    This is why this sort of operation is done by a garage.

    I think your car was not lined up with the wall. You should mark the center of the rear and front bottom of the car and tape a string to it to project the car center to the tape center when you are backed away. now both your lights are aimed left of the true goal positions.

    • @wonked

    Thanks for your video, I tried to use it as a guide to adjust mine since Tesla had to replace driver side headlight twice in 2 months and in both cases they didn’t adjust my headlights. The thing is that the brightest point doesn’t move left and right. I asked a Tesla technician when he was performing some work on my car and he said that he doesn’t know if they actually could move left and right. I’m not sure why Tesla doesn’t put auto adjust option through OTA update

    • @chylld
      @chylld 3 роки тому

      70cm minus 1cm for every metre between the car and the wall. So if your car is 10m from the wall, 60cm. I just did mine 6m from the wall, so I put tape at 64cm height

    This will get your headlights in the ball park but this will never be perfect. I work for Mercedes Benz and we use a perfectly leveled platform to put the vehicle and and we have track built into the floor for the targets as well as using laser levels to exactly align everything.

    • @81MercTurbo

      All cars allow customers to "mess with" headlight adjustment, and have for decades... Tesla just makes it easier, but gives a disclaimer to not.

  • @NickWindham
    @NickWindham 8 місяців тому

    The lights aren’t supposed to be level. If your country drives on the left side, your right headlight should be slightly lower to prevent blinding oncoming traffic. Visa versa is you drive on the right side of the road.

    • @wonked
      @wonked  8 місяців тому

      @wonked yeah, I saw those and thanks a lot for finding and sharing them. Odds are that's the right way and I am wrong. It just makes more sense to me to have the oncoming traffic side slightly lower. 🙃

    • @wonked
