  • Smudges and scuffs seen in bright sun on the panel where easily removed with windex -
Today on HamRadioComms I do a review of the Weize 100W solar panel model SP101W, test the panels voltage and current, compare to the different size Weize panels, show the power coming in to the PWM charge controller, and the batteries that it charges.

Also a Mainer, Casco, I have 4 WEIZE 100w panels so far the Rover 40a and soon (next week) the GIANDREL 2000w 24v Inverter. The panels were bought in full 200w kits so got wires, Z-brackets and a PWM controller in each kit. The plan ultimately is 24v 800w to 'not' grid tie for internal use on a fridge, lo voltage lighting, 24v backup water pump and charging. Essentially a power down basic minimum backup.
Not a ham YET but own a couple HT's, I'll get to that soon enough. Crazy world got to try to keep one step ahead, right?
    So, yeah similar paths, subscribed.

Sounds like a nice system you have going, similar to my 400 W setup. You probably saved a good bit of money getting the kits.
Grid tie systems open a whole can of worms, inspections are required and expensive equipment, and the electric companies pay like 50% of the value of the elect we send them.
Getting into ham radio is a great idea.. nice to have backup if cell towers fail for whatever reason,

Thanks for the vid, price has dropped on these, time to load up.

Is this a 12 or 24 volt solar panel (weize)

These are 12v panels.. though i currently have them in series for 24v going to the controller.

    Another excellent video!.! Thank you

FYI, the spec named "Voc" is not "short circuit voltage". It's "Open Circuit Voltage" or "Voltage - Open Circuit".

Yes that's true, thank you. I should have said open circuit voltage as you mentioned. I meant to say short circuit current for measuring the current which is in the same manner on solar panels.

I'd like to know if I can mix and match? Do different branded panels work if you connect them together?

    • @hamradiocomms

Yes you can connect different brands either in series or parallel as long as wattage is the same and voltage the same. So 100w 12v panels together for example. Check maximum voltage of each panel if connecting many in series as the voltage is added by each panel.

The panel looks a bit dirty. Does that affect the performance?

hI... I didn't realize it had smudges from the factory until I saw it in the bright sun in the video... I took windex and it cleaned up fine. In use, it will get dust, pollen, etc that barely affects the output, but I still hose down all my panels periodically. Plus the rain rinses them off for me, and in the winter, brushing off the snow cleans it too.

@@hamradiocomms I wondered about that. So, how dirty can it get before it affects the output a lot? Thanks for the reply.

@@tubbysailor I think dirt, dust, pollen on it would affect it depending on how obscured the panel gets. Light dusting etc maybe a couple percent down but heavy concentrations would start lowering output by 20, 30% and more of really heavy dirt on it but I think that would be unusual. Normal dusting won’t affect much. We had pine pollen in the spring that turned everything green here in hours and was thick. I hosed down my panels everyday for about three days knowing it was dropping output… it was so thick people here had to clean their windshields before driving because we were unable to see through it !!
