I felt so bad for Alicia. Once those mistakes are made there's no undoing them and there's no way you can think about anything else. Everyone else on the team was so kind and encouraging to her.
The Chines are an absolute joy to watch. They've got artistry, beautiful lines, dancing, charisma, and the difficulty. They completely deserved to win.
I think even if Alicia didn't step out of the beam or mat, it wouldnt have changed a thing. The chinese were absolutely amazing that day.
Shawn Johnson- the star and saviour of the US team.
the crowd noise in the 96 olympics was unprecedented. the athletes from other countries literally couldn't hear their floor music. it wasn't with malicious intent or because the crowd hated the other countries, but in 96, it is true that it was unbelievably loud and the fans seemed to have zero regard for the other athletes competing.
I love the Chinese gymnasts.I'm Romanian myself, but they are simply wonderful. Extremely capable, artistic, cute as hell and very fair play. I don't even want to start on the Americans.
I loved on how Deng Linlin started on floor. It was so cute and sassy! She is my FAVORITE gymnast.
I agree, this team is definitely my favorite so far. For their personalities and the gymnastics. The perfect mix of power and grace was here, where as 2012 was all power.
Breathtaking!
I loved how Deng started her routine on floor... it was sooooo cute and sassy!
Johnson's music from this comp bugged me so much, it's like the music from the trailer of a cheesy Pixar movie
I loved this USA team. Seemed to have the closest out of all the teams. The 2012 team was so talented but it seemd to be very cliquey. And like how the whole team comforted Alicia here, when Jordyn Weber was having her breakdown besides the coach no one else seemed to comfort her off camera.
Shawn and Deng linlin are the cutest little things ever!!! they are my favorites
I absolutely adore deng linlin...
kinda funny how the person on the bars when deng linlin was performing got slowed down when bbc played deng's routine in slowmo :)
a.sac and johnson sitting together nice moments from the olympics
deng linlin is the cutest thing, i like the butt shaking.
I agree. Nastia was underscored too.
Deng Linlin is so cute!
i know this is totally random, but the music for linlins routine sounds SO much alike the ending theme for the disney movie ratatouille =P
@strongbad635 that was that code, your deductions are the current code 2009-2012. just like a fall was .8, now its a full point.
She stepped OOB.
@bigsleep32 It has been confirmed that they were all of age and therefore eligible to compete. They did not cheat, and as a team, they performed better than all of the other teams. Fair and square.
@stillers0131 It can be either - just alternate spellings/pronunciations.
After seeing all of this China knows that they don't have to go all out for difficulty now! They really had such a huge advantage! With all of the difficulty and the mistakes of others!
Shawn Johnson was underscored on her floor routine here. She only got a 15.100?! Even with the step out no way its that low.
oh man you're right about shawn's missing twist on her third pass. she did it everywhere else - i wonder where it went?
There actually is newspaper articles about one of the Chinese girls the year before in 2007 stating her as 13 at the time meaning she would have been 14 here, nevertheless amazing work just thought I would say some people opinion is based on more them not looking 16
there so pretty
@138cll They often get foreign choreographers actually.
I totally agree that sounds disrespectful of them, but in 1996 nobody thought America would win so I guess it was a huge shock for everyone (I was born in 1996, so I obviously don't remember lol.) Remember in 2012 when the British men's team got bronze (almost silver) and Beth Tweddle got a bronze on bars? Since it was a huge shock and the games were in London, the crowd went absolutely crazy.
Ohhh you have it all backwards, no matter how it may seem here, this 2008 team was very drama filled and VERY cliquey. There hasn't been much information on the 2012 teams dynamics but there is A LOT on this ones
At 3:53 the female commentator stated that, "she (Alicia Sacramone) didn't plan on making the mistakes."
I would like to think that this British commentator was rather professional.
Anyone who thinks that Sacramone's fellow countrymen shouldn't have blamed her, should appreciate this commentator's sentiment.
actually both Shawn and Nastia stepped out on their floor routines - look closely and notice the red flag going up for both of them - and those were significant deductions
@randomness132
can I ask why this is directed at China?
Every athlete competing has to go through this, I don't see y China is getting all the blame here....
Her tumbling was pretty ace though
OH, so that's what China was saying "ga yau", go give it your all. I just thought it was a lot of screaming when I watched it on TV back in 2008.
Just wondering that why every time is nast first then shawn (i mean the order)
does that mean shawn is better???
like china, they put cheng fei last on floor...
China EXCELENTE.
@lepi4san 03:14 Shawn is well within the line on her double-double. She should not have gotten that deduction.
I think he was commenting on how easy she makes it look.
looking at deng linlin, who is one of my favorite gymnasts to watch, it just seems so unlikely to me that she could possibly be 16...I know most all Chinese gymnasts looks about 5, but she is really pushing my doubts
I like shawns style better. its more about the atheleticism rather than artistic which is what i am here for not art.
@lepi4san Well I wouldn't say significant...one foot out is only a tenth but I get what you're saying
"USA had such bad luck in the team final. Two members got injured... Who knows what could have happened then.."
Let's do the "if": If China's Pang Panpan wasn't injuried, she would do bars (with a higher start value than Jiang's); beam (better than Cheng); and floor (better than Deng). If Jiang didn't have elbow injury right before Olympics, she would do vault with a 6.5 start value.
I know the flag was raised for Shawn but 3:21 it doesn't look like her foot is out!!
honestly i think she was on the line on her double double.... but oh well
china
@GymFloozie we may be the laughing stock to the world, but we have produced the last 2 all around gold medalists, and that is nothing to scoff at.
or the USA were fortunate that they were such a strong team
It seems as if the Americans go into the World Championships the year before the Olympics, without any pressure really, and do great and win. But then they go to the Olympics and succumb to the pressure and earn the silver. It happened here and in Athens. I'm not saying that silver is horrible (it's great!), but they could do so much better.
I thought the same thing. I usually like the BBC commentators because they remain mostly impartial but that @3:40 was just so rude.
lawl at people who thought this was choreographed "by the government". it's especially ironic that at around 8:05 the female commentator mentions that they brought in a foreign choreographer to specially make these routines. as if the chinese government has the time to personally construct gymnastics floor exercise routines... ha!
Shawn was underscored on floor :(
and small
Chinese Team 👍👍
this sport is called ARTISTIC gymnastics u know that right?
Do I have a right to my own opinion about how old they were? Yes. Was the 2004 Chinese team of age to me? Yes. To me, they seemed a little under age, and don't get me wrong. They were a great team to watch! America was beaten by a team that was better, it's just whether that team was legit or not. It was almost 4 years ago, LEAVE IT ALONE and GROW UP.
@FlicTuckFull 2004 was definitely not the strongest competition, but I disagree that 2008 was weak. The Chinese alone had 3 gymnasts that could have easily taken gold had they hit all of their routines.
@bananas1and2 Except they were under the age limit. As great as a team they were, they didn't deserve it.
I love Shawn and love watching her on floor, but this music doesn't seem to match the routine at all.
i know that! omg but i can still not like that right? god....i have my own opinion deal with it.
would you please be quiet and enjoy the sports without being offensive towards another country! the olympics is supposed to be a respectful sport and degrading another country by uttering hurtful, unintellectual and outright rude comments does not help anyone in this situation.
People are going crazy in the stadium for their home team--which is normal. They are loud, maybe too loud for what the typical gymnastics meet is accustomed to, but it's understandable--they're cheering on their team. WELCOME TO 1996 ATLANTA. Can people please stop whining about the Georgia Dome now? Here are the Chinese cheering on their amazing gymnasts, & they didn't even have a dramatic Strug!Vault, they were just urging on their team.People cheer for their home team--gasp! I know, shocking.
Oh dear. I think the team is reliant on Alicia to lead them and when she doesn't do well, they don't do well either.
i think that shawn johnson should have gotten a higher score then that
Why sudden switch of topic? Oh I see, you reached a dead end in ur arguments.
Why does everyone assume Americans hate every country but their own? I 100% agree with you, but you didn't need to bring America into this-that guy isn't even American.
This is completely a hunch, but maybe it's because Jordyn comes off as so conceited that the other girls were glad she didn't make it.
@bananas1and2 how can you say they deserved to win when half they team was under age? If America had cheated nobody would be saying that.
lol, no they didn't, China was loud only for their gymnasts and actually cheered when the USA fell.
Alicia Sacramone really let down team USA! Those mistakes were very costly!
well, u could have told me it was a joke without insulting me! how do u know wat kind of a person i am? u r judging me even when u say that u dun like to be judged as well. im sorry i offended u in any way, but u could have been nice about it. i didnt even say one single insulting thing to u. WTH!!
The female commentator was just as annoying here. She had to say "it makes you wonder about the selection process in America ...." referring to Sacramone's falls. And to rub salt in, put the entire blame on Sacramone. The girl is only human and looked devastated at her errors. The commentator didn't have to crush her spirit as well. B*%#@! Sacramone is a great gymnast.
Well yeah, they were great. They were so enthusiastic and supportive of everyone, not just China. I don't know why that guy got thumbs down, though-it's true, but that's just home crowd advantage. Of course they're going to cheer loud when athletes from their own country succeed. Happened in Beijing, happened in London. It's nobody's fault.
These commentators mentioned at least half a dozen times that a step out was a .1 deduction. Someone needed to tell them that under the new code, one foot out was a .3 deduction and 2 feet out is a .6 deduction.
haha...i think the US team would suck at that too
the commentators are very rude towards alicia
is that all you think about? usa winning? poor sportsmanship indeed.
Innocent until proven guilty. Sure you have your opinions, I also have a lot of bias opinions too but if there was DEFINITE proof (something more convincing than "those girls are too small to be 16" and something about one of the chinese athletes' baby tooth) then then the metals would have been stripped from the chinese team, and your opinion aside the fact still remains that there was no proof to support they weren't 16.
@138cll There's nothing sheese about Adriana Pop's work. In contrast, the americans' are horrible!
much has been said. we all know, asians do it better.
