Great reviews thanks. Watched a heap of your gear reviews and like that you offer decent advice on who and why a given iron might suit. I'm currently trying to decide between these two, and felt during testing it was pretty much down to aesthetics and maybe a bit of extra help with the cast. The Forged does look the nicer iron.
Great video mark .I use the 850 forged 6i to pw. 850 cast 5i & 4i .the added forgiveness helps in the those long irons . You're video doesn't show stats on it cause your very consistent. Where can I purchase a bunker hat like yours ? Keep up the good work . Gordy , vancover Canada
Mark, as always, fantastic video. I am new to golf (23 handicap) and a huge fan of your approach to the game. I noticed at 2:52, the club you are swinging looks to be a RSi (black slots). Is it just a case of mistaken footage or am I way off? I also notice you hitting off a mat. I tried that after a few lessons and noticed it makes me hit fat shots (which some quick research online confirms this is a common issue). How do you address this issue? Special mat or something else?
Hi Mark. I live in South Africa so those irons are not even close to being released yet. I'm a 4 hc and am currently gaming MP64. The 850 forged look like awesome clubs but I was wondering how they would compare to the MP15?
Hi mark, Im looking to buy some 'game improvement' irons and im on love with the fly-z irons (not sure whether regular or the XL version) and the mizuno JPX 850 so could you do a comparison video please? Thanks and keep up the good work!
Hiya, the numbers show higher spin on the cast model, so am I correct in thinking that the cast would be easier to hit and stop faster on the other end?
Mark, So what is the point of EZ irons? Mizuno is keeping up the JPX 800,825 and now 850....was the EZ just for a different color and not a chrome look? I understand why companies release *new products a lot to get buzz going (see taylormade, callaway), but the EZ squeezed in between the 825 and 850 just seems odd to me, especially from a company like mizuno.
The EZ cast is the friendliest iron they make, the EZ forged - the friendliest forged. JPX line is designed for a multitude of recreational handicaps, a bit more demanding of the player. MP line is aimed at the tour market, though the -59//-15 ti muscle designs are pretty friendly for blades.
Not really sure what the market for the forged clubs is - performance no better than the standard cast model which offers more help, a big consideration for the people who would buy them - the sort of customer who would be tempted by the forged are more likely to be looking at the better player Mizunos like the MP-H5s, which seem astonishing clubs, i would have thought - they market the boron as giving increased performance which clearly it doesn't, sounds like market hype to me - the standard 850s are great clubs the forged just seem to be a range nobody would want.
I think the reasons for buying forged vs cast are pretty obvious and well known. As someone who bought the 850 forged before it was even released to the full market I guess that makes me living proof that there is a market for them - and my game improved instantly - fact. Sure there is marketing hype and the Boron is probably a load of nonsense but show me a manufacturer not involved in hype? I wanted a forged club that provided help and user friendliness and this club delivers - fact. I wasn't looking for more distance just more control, predictability and the ability to play more types of shots - this club gives that. Just for clarity, a forged club offers considerably more shot making potential than a cast club and gives a lot more feedback through the increase feel from forging therefore helping you learn and improve more than a cast club ... but I assume you knew that anyway? A cast club is much harder to work - usually only lower handicappers with repeatable swings and much better ball striking can work cast clubs on demand (fade, draw, higher, lower etc.) To me that makes the market for a forged club that offers some additional forgiveness pretty obvious. The added bonus is that they are beautiful looking clubs, whereas to my eye cast clubs including the 850 cast are not. Horses for courses. I notice that you have posted very negatively about the 850 forged on both of Marks videos on it ... seems odd to be so upset about this club!
A fair point - its what i always say - if you like a club and buy it for that reason you wont be disappointed - mine are nothing special but I do like them - really what I dont get about these clubs was using boron steel and that was really my criticism - boron hardens steel which seems mad when you want a soft feel - they claim its for longer performance but it seems Mark finds no evidence of this which is pretty much what i would expect - hence my comment why buy the forged when you can buy forged in another range, you seem to be paying more for little increase - my disappointment is that Mizuno seems to have added a bit of hype which is what you dont expect from a manufacturer who makes such amazingly good classic clubs - really boron steel hardly merits a huge engraving on the head - these are good clubs but really nothing game changing - its what you expect, good quality and good performing clubs from a good manufacturer - i just hope they don't go down the mad hype route taken by some other manufacturers - if I upgrade from my Lynx cavity backs i will almost certainly buy the MP-H5s they look stunning ;-)
Vici Martynov Boron allows us greater design freedom............the thinner portion between sole and frame is what produces the additional ball speed (compared to other forged irons). Fact that JPX850 Forged matches the non Forged in ball speed and distance is the achievement. Some people (like Mark) will prefer the off centre forgiveness of the non forged JPX850 - but if feel is more important to you, the JPX850 Forged is tough to beat as an overall package.
Ah now that makes sense - in fact impressive - I think you sell yourselves short by pushing the buzzwords rather than the engineering - the promotions do not suggest you are maintaining performance to match forged to cast which I do find very impressive - thank you faith restored - smiles
I recently replaced my MP-53 irons with the JPX-850 forged. I hit the 850s further than my old MP-53s, but still enjoy the forged feel. Great clubs.
love the look and eel of forged over cast plus the forged irons can be adjusted if need be while cast irons cannot be adjusted.
You know it's winter when Mark gets back into his teaching bay for reviews!
i feel my jpx 850s shine with a soft ball especially. love em

Why did you use the ProV1 with the forged iron and the ProV1x with the cast?
Mark, what will it run you for one of those gc2's? The GC2 + the head measurement that is.

The numbers show basic shots from the two clubs are similar, what about shot shaping, would you expect much difference in control?
Hi Mark - Great video. Normal result when you test ie not much difference in clubs: club speed the same and carry the same. If than go to..........

Mark, How about performance around the greens,,,chipping...pitching...accuracy...from various lies

Nice review! Thank you.
Have you compared the 850 Forged vs the H5? If not would you? I'm interested compare and contrast between the two.
Mark, have you compared or could you compared the Callaway Apex to the Mizuno JPX850 Forged?
Reviewing the 850 driver soon?
I'd be happy just to see a left handed set!!!
Mark,
I currently play with JPX 800HD. I have the Hi-fli hybirds for the long irons.Would it be worth the money to upgrade. I have a 16 handicap.
blue looks better 💙
boron does do something mark. Numbers don't lie.

P.S. still won't tempt me away from the MP-H5s though ;-)
