The main thing I learned as a mechanic in the Marine Corps was always look busy. Whether that meant making sure I was far enough under a truck with my coverall sleeves buttoned together over my head while I napped or making sure I had a rag and a wrench in my back pocket or a clipboard with some paper, blank or otherwise as I roamed aimlessly around the maintenance yard. :)
LOL Oh how I remember those days....Semper Fi Vern !!!! Even us grunts did the same thing !!! If I cleaned my weapon anymore it would've been polished.
As a 0331 i just held the trigger to look busy. Did use my 240 as a pillow once, but she was clean and ready to roll. Just like Sarah said, clean them before use. Wise words.
A few times won't matter at all, but just for future reference, most of the 'wear' on HID bulbs comes from the higher potential of ignition as they're switched on, not really them being on. Them being on for a half hour drive causes less stress on the bulb than initially turning them on for that drive. It's a gripe I have with several manufacturers that don't use a separate bulb for flashing the high beams, and ignite the HID and lower the bi-xenon flap. It's usually the same cars that have a DRL running dimmed at 8 volts that could just be switched to a higher duty cycle, wearing the $10 bulbs, not the $100 ones... Volkswagen.
The magnetic arm and indicator is used to measure run out on rotating objects, shafts, rotors, bearings etc. Another great vid! I teach my daughter how to work on her car every chance I get. This past weekend she replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, intake hose, oil & filter, and a tranny flush. I point explain and help find things in the Haynes manual.
Putting the hardware back where it came from is a great tip. I started doing this after you mentioned it in another video a while back. Its a smart idea that has saved me a lot of time and trouble. Thanks, Sarah! 👍
Sarah. Thank you for Bring me a lot of joy in the failing time in my life. Thank you for being a real, down to earth , beautiful young Lady with an open mind and outstanding talent. Ted.
Excellent advice/tips all around on this video Sarah. I always make a parts list or to-do list when I work on my cars. My memory is terrible. Another way to keep track of bolts when working on say a water pump, is to place it on a box or piece of cardboard. Then draw an outline and mark the holes and push the bolts through the corresponding holes in the order they came out. Scrap cardboard or something similar works great for making templates too. I dig the bench made from spare parts. Nice to know I’m not the only one that makes things from random crap that’s laying around lol.
So happy AF,Retired, my 91miata runs great! GOOD LUCK Florida Keys Mike, when I worked on the flight line on aircraft I always went to job control and looked at their maintenance board, if you want to make a day off for yourself clear the board , then you get to go home early, I hate cutting myself especially on the inner forearms
This is why you have a successful channel, always mixing it up and staying organized. As you know organization is the best way to be successful, keep up the great work love your videos.
Whoop whoop! Getting stuff done! No leaky leaky, and sweet ass looking tires too. Really like that tread pattern. Haha a mirror, the 1 thing that was always broke in our tool boxes whenever we did ataf 😂😂
Sarah...the main buzz in town (there's still more to come). Re-bolt removal from new jobs, I've often used disposable paper plates; cheap (ie-don't throw them out when they're demoted from the kitchen), you can write on them, ie crossmember bolts, gearbox bolts, and they soak up stains (to a point).
My first thought was, your OCD is 💯. I just washed my engine bay in preparation for a AC compressor replacement for the same reason. To not introduce dirt/debris into the system. ✊🏼
I'm probably in the minority here, but... I subscribed after you purchased the TT. So I would naturally like to see you finish it. New wheels, new seats, and a lemon, tangerine or lime wrap. Then I'd like to see you sell it to someone that had a smile on their face from ear to ear!
Clean it before working on it. Great tip. Most people think it's obsessive to keep an engine clean, but in reality, it's just good practice. I can spot a leak at a glance.
When I was working as a tire tech I found that cloth gloves were an absolute must. If you're doing something like rebuilding an engine or working in an engine bay nitrile gloves are way nicer but if I'm working on suspension or something where dexterity isn't as important I go with the cloth gloves. They both have their places in my opinion.
knexfreak32 I watched two different colleagues in the Air Force lose a finger working on heavy equipment because of cloth gloves. I only wear them, like you said, on instances where I know without a doubt dexterity isn’t an issue.
I’m trying to get caught up with your channel. And I’m glad to see you feeling less stressed!?!? I didn’t realize this channel started out as a two person project. But I do realize how much work actually goes into all that you do. And, I want to say that you are doing an amazing job!! Keep up the great work!! I wish there was more I could do besides giving you words of encouragement. You are Awesome!!🤗
Of course this was useful to me. That white board is an awesome trick. I am going to put one up in my garage. You continue to impress me with your top notch videography and editing, but having you at the center of it all makes it extra special. Love from Michigan!
Great video! I'll try washing the truck before working on it next. Some things I've used in the past for times when I couldn't put the bolts and nuts back from where they came is using ziploc bags with a sharpie to mark down where they came from. Egg cartons come in handy for parts with long shafts so they don't roll around and don't fit in a ziploc.
Yes indeed, screwing bolts back into their homes is a great idea to keep track of them, I do this as much as I can at work, also bags and tags are also good :)
I always give your her videos the thumbs up before I even watch them because I have that much faith that the video will be good you have never let me down keep up the good work.
Nice work, don't like construction work either but managed to install a new fire rated door between the garage and basement and a new walk threw door to the garage, plus a new storm door last fall.
Thank you for providing some great tips. I certainly hadn't considered why nitrile/latex gloves would be a better choice than woven padded mechanics gloves in confined spaces.
In the spirit of this video, I figure I’ll share a couple things I’ve picked up over the years. First, since you were filling your coolant in the video, I got a spill proof funnel to do that on my cars, and it’s great. It comes with attachments for pretty much any radiator cap, and makes it easy to fill without spillage, which always happened to me because there never seams to be a funnel that works well in the radiator. Admittedly, this isn’t as big a deal on a car with a surge tank like the TT, but if it has a regular radiator cap and overflow, it’s the best. Second, I keep track on the date and mileage of any work I do on one of my cars in the notes app on my phone. This way, I know when I last changed my oil/brake fluid/coolant/AC compressor/camshaft/heads or whatever whenever I need to know, since I always have it in my pocket.
one thing you could use that dial gauge on is measuring the runout of a brake disc or a wheel hub. To see if they are warped. Also if you are ever rebuilding an engine you could use it to measure the end float of a crank. But there are lots of uses for it
I'm a relatively newish subscriber, Slowly been getting into watching your content because of your unique personality. Finding out you're a veteran it totally makes sense now, I'm a veteran myself. The awkwardness, wittiness and the Sexual Innuendos, It all makes perfect sense now.. lol
Thanks for the fastener tip. I’m so ADHD that it’s hard for me to keep track of parts. If you aren’t an engineer, you ought to be one. Your problem solving skills run circles around experienced engineers. BTW: Thank you for your service.
Dear Sarah thank you for your service and thanks for the good tips you’re 100% right clean the (the project) just makes sense also the work area your videos always make me smile john for MI.
Of all the female UA-cam channels available, yours is tops. Giving great content all the time without having to resort to “sponsor “ clips. Also, your vids don’t force needless ads to come up while attempting to view the vid. Keep them coming!
If you find that the grip on those vinyl gloves is sometimes lacking, go to walmart and look for Grease Monkey Traction Grip Nitrile Disposable Gloves, they have a texture on the grip that helps big time with holding onto things, but still has all the advantages of the disposable gloves, they are a bit thicker material as well so they stand up to mechanic type work better then the el-cheap-o's
Only 4 years on those bulbs dang! I just recently replaced my projector retrofit Philips HID bulbs that were 13 years old! I did the retrofit in 2004 and replaced the bulbs in 2017.
Most cars are setup in a way that from a cold start, at idle the radiator will lose enough heat through natural convection that the fans aren't necessary. On the TT, the low speed fan switch, F54, closes at 95*C, so actual coolant temp you would read from the ECM or Cluster/49c from the coolant temp sensors, G2/G62 would have to be a several degrees above that, since they're located directly off the head, and the fan switch is halfway down the big heat sync that is that shiny new radiator. Even before the radiator upgrade, you were only sitting at 99* after driving(with fans full on the whole time) so those fans probably won't be spinning up much anymore, at least until you get on it a little. Good to hear they're working correctly now! I've witnessed well experienced, dealership techs condemn $1,000 cooling fan assemblies because they didn't turn on in the shop, only to later find out that the engine had a cracked cylinder sleeve or warped head. Those are fun conversations to have with customers. Glad you decided to drive it before assuming there was a problem.
Yay Teeter Tot is finally cool, do luv a job list, and your look is a good look, it's garage Sarah's working on cars look 😁. Glad the sleeves fitted hope they're of some use.
wow you can do alot with that magnetic gauge holder..you can use a dial gauge to determine how much runout is on your brakes or as for me i use it when BLUEPRINTING ENGINES/
Some good tips in here, some reaffirmation of my own habits. The manic hair may not be your best look but you looked super pretty laying on the creeper with the halo of hair around your head at 7:34
-3 hours of sleep -9 hours working hard in that damn sole factory when I could be an appliance repair man 'cos yes, I LOVE to repair appliances and messing around with vintage cars -1 hour of gym trying to burn some fat -Shower -Dinner... PEACE OF MIND 😇
Love the vids, Audi TT ones especially, as I have an Audi S3 8L which is mechanically identical and have done similar repairs, but my other two cars are almost as bad, a VW passat 3.2 and audi a3 3.2, so with all three I don't have much spare time anymore, they are all projects really.
I was working on my car over the weekend and had a swarm of bees show up in my garage too! It was nuts. Ended up turning on the car and running it for a few minutes to give off exhaust gas to get them to leave. Swarms must be out in this warm weather looking for new hive locations..... NOT IN MY GARAGE!!!!!
Yeah I gotta take a leaf out of your book. I do use those magnetic trays but I cant tell you how many "spare bolts" I have in containers in my garage from working on cars. Not really spare. I just never found where they went back in. In Australia we just call it weight reduction lol

"pay it forward" is not just monetary, your knowledge is invaluable
You seem more at peace in this video! Maybe slowing up some is helping.
Just your smile and quirky antics is all we need, and you make us happy!
Oh my gosh! Thank you so much for the shout out!!!😭💕🙏🏻 you are so inspirational. Seriously thank you for all you do❤️ I always learn so much from you
You absolutely make my day. People like you are few and far between. You just don’t know how important you really are.
You're positive attitude and silliness always make me smile. I'm going through something rough now. Thanks for the laughs.

"This is not my best look" says someone who is always the best looking. Thank you for making and sharing your wonderful videos.
I love it when the garage dwelling Sasquatch has a beautiful smile on her face. Makes my day. And, your worst look is by far your best look.

Hope the G65 is the full issue with the TT.

Never get not awkward Sarah 😂
i love my magnetic tray, it's great for NOT losing your 10mm when using another socket ;) also keeps the wobble and short extention handy

Some great tips
I use the black 6 mm Raven gloves from O'Reilly's. They have saved me so much. Great top.
Would be cool to see a video featuring your top 5 or 10 most used/useful tools

"That has a long shaft; I like that." Lmao!!! I love Sarah so much. There, I said it. :)
I love your channel so much 💕

You have the same stud finder that I have. Mine is useless, of course. It beeps anytime I get near it.

Yeah I gotta take a leaf out of your book.
I do use those magnetic trays but I cant tell you how many "spare bolts" I have in containers in my garage from working on cars.
Not really spare. I just never found where they went back in.
In Australia we just call it weight reduction lol
The arm warmers for bicyclists are very thin, made for winter riding, and don't snag as bad as those emo sleeves. They are also more liquid repellent. Even in the heat, they transfer moisture better and faster, and wont slip
Thanks for the tips makes a lot of sense great video as always
Great vid girl, keep it up.
lol your easy and your puns are awesome
A month ago your comments were blowing up with questions and recommendations for the tt cooling issues. Now that you've upgraded, troubleshot, and temporarily fixed the system to regain proper operation, more people are concerned with how flat your stomach is.
I say job well fucking done.
Just so you know, there are very few techs out there that would have gotten to the root without going through the steps, and new parts, you did. Most probably would have condemned the fans as well.
Oh god, we have that same that was easy button in our lab at the winery (Which has DI water 💧 I get for detailing cars) Just the other day I was pressing the easy button and said the same thing that Sarah said 🤦♂️
Spring!
My maintenance board consists of sticky notes on the dinner table...extra motivation to get them done and off the dinner table 😜
Really liked the video focusing on more than one car :)
Luv your videos 😀😀😀😀😀Thank you
Good stuff Sarah, you are seriously witty!(-:
