Requiescat in Pace.
Saludos Mandalorian 66.
I always cry at the end of the film, when Peckinpah plays again this scene. It looks like a way to Heaven, because they've finally got redemption and peace.
This is a very moving part of the film, where this song fits in with the mood of the moment. A way of life is changing for the group. I agree Peckinpah was genius indeed. As they ride out the village, the "Farewell song is sung to them, very dramatic.
Yes that is another great scene, the Ed O'Brien monologue, but those two scenes are so different that it's just a matter of one's own tastes. I think the whole film is a masterpiece and it teems with potenially favourite scenes!
the end of a time ... the time of great spaces , of free men , of violence , but the time of " honneur " and " amitié " also ... Sam Peckinpah had made a " chef d' oeuvre " , an extreme violent movie , but very shakespearian in the ambiant ... i see that always and always since ... a lot of years ! Personnaly , one of my best movies forever ...
It was unfortunate that when this film was released most of the attention centred around criticising the violence in it, and too many people overlooked what an utter work of genius it actually was.. and is. Forty years on it still ranks as the best Western ever made. This scene is perhaps the most poignant in the entire film, symbolising the resignation of men realising that their time on Earth was drawing to a close. No matter how many times I watch it I always end up with tears in my eyes.
The song "La Golondrina" (The Swallow) was sung in the middle of the movie when The Wild Bunch rides out of Angels home village for the final showdown and again with the closing credits of the film.
*THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR "LA GOLONDRINA". I love this Mexican song of Narciso Serrradell Sevilla so much. I have now more than 810 versions of "La Golondrina"/or "Las Golondrinas"/or "She Wears My Ring"/or "Cet Anneau D'Or"/etc... -instrumentals and songs/ world-wide. WHO IS MORE INTERESTED TO GET SOME IN .mp3, PLEASE LET ME KNOW, THNX! Regards!
It was no accident that Sam Peckinpah chose "La Golondrina" for the middle village scene and end sequences of the movie. Right before the Wild Bunch decides it is more honorable to die attempting to rescue a member of their group whom they betrayed (Angel), they leave a brothel (while a prostitute complains in Spanish about not being paid - i.e., cheated, betrayed, and left behind) and the camera suddenly focuses on a stunned, paralyzed swallow on the dirt floor. This is clear symbolism. - "golondrina" is the Spanish word for the bird known as a "swallow" in English.. Angel IS the swallow. And the lyrics of the song, translated into English (literally, so forgive the stilted Engliish) prove it: "To where shall it it go - fazed and worn out - the swallow, going away from here - where will it go? Seeking shelter, and yet it will not find any, Oh, heavens above: and unable to fly! Next to my nightstand I will set its nest, where it may endure the cold season, Here I am too, also in the realm of the lost, and unable to fly." The song describes Angel - wandering franticly without a home or safe haven (his village is repeatedly being ravaged by opposing factions of the Mexican Revolution, and his love-interest has betrayed him by running off with Mapache), and he cannot even find shelter with his Wild Bunch because thet have betrayed him and hand him over to Mapache. The Wild Bunch are like the narrator of the song - finally sympathizing with the Golondrina (Angel) and doing what they can to succor him - although they too (like the song's narrator) are just as lost and unable to "fly" to any true sanctuary, .
It was Princess Christine signing at the funeral of her father Prince Bernard. prince-cohort of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. The texts of La Golondrina all differ slightly in Spanish. Who can give me the definite Spanish version the way it was written in Vera Cruz, Mexico?
@tommytruth I appreciate this great tune featured in this film but I also take great exception to ignorant comments like: "no Anglo in this world could have written or sung. They don't have it in them." I'm not sure how you define "Anglo" or what you mean when you say (we) don't have "it" in (us). I suggest you check out: "Minstrel Boy" by Thomas Moore or "Danny Boy" by Frederick Weatherly. If time / space allowed I'd list a lot more. Learn to appreciate music for what it is, not it's origins.
Why would poor Mexican villiagers sing a song to a bunch of outlaws, gringos, from America? What did they do for these Mexicans, except to get rich from those who looted the villiage ? This sentimental scene was what the director wanted, "honor" for his outsiders. And in the end they all got what they wanted. Money from the poor, duped, impressionable, and sentimental fans.
La Golondrina (The Swallow) - Check out the film "Big Wednesday" it runs the theme all through. AND it'sxc a great film. I learned to play it just because of the film. Isn't life inspiring sometimes!
@tommytruth I somewhat but can not totally agree with here . . . for THE BEST scene in this fine movie look up: "THE WILD BUNCH-1969-THEY!" (also on You Tube)
shit ....ahnold swarzenneger and co stole the the last battle scene for the predetor movie.... all the slow motion explosions and gunshot victims grimacing in pain..right down to ahnolds character "Dutch" nothin is sacred.. they even had that small gattlin gun...please!!!

I agree with Tommy. Mexican music is so distinctive and uniquely beautiful. No disrespect to the other fine airs you quote, previous poster.

Thankyou my friend
A very old song,I have asked my sons to play this for me when I check out...
@majarein It was Princess Christina singing at the funeral of her father Prince Bernhard, cohort of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands.
This month is the 40th anniversary of Sam Peckinpah's master piece.
Beautiful song and interpretation. What was the name of the film...if any?

It appears that the film name was "The Wild bunch", then, Who or what is the name of the siging group, choir or musical band?
