Which Mob Series is Better? The Sopranos VS Tulsa King | Sitdown with Michael Franzese

- I’ve been asked this question a lot since we started the Tulsa King series review. What are the differences and probably similarities between Tulsa King and The Sopranos? In today’s video, we are going to do a comparison of these two mob-themed series that many of us love to watch. Some would say, it’s not the same caliber as the Sopranos is an iconic-classic mob series while Tulsa King has a more modern take on it. But I honestly think it is worth comparing this two series side by side.

We all want Franzese in Season 2
Fk yeah ! Why did I not come with that idea...
A neat scenario is Michael is preaching at a mega church in Tulsa and they have some interaction.
@@vanmoody that can actually damage the show.
Plenty of people here are kind of fed up with that blabber how Michael is blessed and thankful to JFK every day.
99,99% of people are here because of his past life, not because they want to listen how JFK have saved his life and whatever.
So no, we want to see him in a lot heavier role.
@@ducedevlstear2471 wtf are you talking about?
@@abc4781 what you mean ?
James Gandolfini was far more than just a great actor he was also deeply loved and admired by those who worked with him. There's quite a few interviews from fellow actors saying just what a wonderful man he was. R.I.P. Jimmy!
Yup, RIP.
the fact that Tony Soprano goes to a shrink adds to the character, so they sacrificed authenticity in exchange for giving the viewers a deep look into Tony's psyche, that could have never happened just from regular dialogues with his associates. So the dialogues with his doctor literally allowed the watcher of the show to be in Tony's mind
But Tulsa King is authentic? lol how about just enjoy both for what they are, great stories
Well i will say one thing: in Tulsa king we get even on start of first episode...but not as much afterwards, a piece of personal narration including introspection and comentary on it as the old classic favoured in film noir genre.... Internal Monologue. Couldn't a show do that for all the exposition into way of thought as well i ternal momentary judgement and at times emotions that guide personal drive like for example the stylized internal monologues of noir graphic novel adaptation Sin City ?
I honestly can not see a mafia tv show character being better than Paulie Walnuts, guy was the most unintentionally funny person ever
Guy was an interior decorator....

I think the writers knew Tony seeing a psychiatrist was unrealistic. But as you said, they probably had it in there because it made the show so much better and gave the viewers an insight into Tony's thoughts and problems. Sometimes there's a tradeoff between making a show realistic and making it entertaining. Which is the whole reason why we watch these shows in the first place.
It was modelled on either Frank Costello who DID see a shrink.
@Zareth The Alchemist which is why it isnt unrealistic at all. Not sure why people say that. The stigma around seeing a shrink isnt confined to mafia life, its apart of normal life as well. That stuff is way overblown.
@@79glane928 It's unrealistic because if he was continually seeing a therapist they'd be wondering if he was talking about the life specifically
have you even seen sopranos?? the whole of season 1 and 2 tony is hiding it because he knew he'd get whacked if people found it. even his mother tried to whack him over it lol
Sopranos wasn't a simple mafioso mob series. If it was that it wouldn't be nearly as iconic as it is.
How lucky are we that we get Michael's unique (and real) perspective? Lots of respect for where you came from and where you are now, Michael.
Hello Big Mike I'm a disabled veteran living in the Philippines I love your videos and how you explain everything.I admire the way you carry yourself.Have a great New Year
The Sopranos is better than 99% of shows made out there, let alone mafia shows.
Closing in on that million subscribers Uncle Mike! Congratulations! Been with you since the first days.
I can not compare any tv show with The Sopranos. The Sopranos have changed the rules of television and opened up a really huge area for other shows to come. At the mean time i really enjoy Tulsa King. Winter is a great writer, i love his works. Stallone is a giant. Great series. Hope we will see 5 or 6 seasons more.
It was totally a joy to watch of comparison this two series. Thank you Mr. Franzese for create this great content.
Finally i have a question for you Mr. Franzese;
I am not sure if you've watched or remember The Sopranos scene in S06E19 which Meadow Soprano and her boyfriend having lunch on a club in New York. A New York made guy Coco spotted Meadow and he visited her table. Insulted her in front of her boyfriend and made some stupid jokes like ''There is a cream on your mouth. I would like to add some.'' When Tony heard this situation he went to the club and beat the shit up of Coco and leaned his mouth on marble and gave his teeths to his hands. So my question is, was it the proper punishment for a situation like this? Or was it a death penalty? I will be glad if you answer this for me.
Wish you the best.
Cheers.
Depression is (like Michael says) oftenly seen as a disease for weak & oversensitive persons. Having witnessed it from close (and those people were far from weak) i have to say i feel deep grief & respect for people who struggle with this. People who oftenly feel deep love for their family & close ones but see no other way than stepping out. Nobody can tell me it does not take a lot of courage to make such a heartbreaking decission. Thanks Michael for giving attention to this subject.
Both are really good shows, but completely different and in a different decade. Can't really compare one to the other, only thing that is for sure is they're both really well done, entertaining & overall a good watch
You are 💯 right.
Sopranos in a complete different class from any drama written since, or any show in general I'd argue. It's my number one show of all time and I've watched all the best rated shows, I watch sopranos at least once a year.
That would be nice if you could have a sit down talk with Sly Stallone playing in Tulsa King . He is awesome in the Tulsa King. Love the series.
I really enjoyed the series.....sly did a wonderful job.
Stallone is amazing. So many classic screen characters over the decades, and now in his mid seventies he’s got another one.
He still looks great too. I hope to look like him in my 70s God willing.
I'm loving it! I'm just 5 episodes in but I'm hooked.

Hi Michael! I enjoyed the comparison. I see The Sopranos as a show driven by the issue of mental illness and how it impacts daily life, whereas Tulsa Kings is about redemption. Both shows use a ‘mob setting’ to discuss these topics and are entertaining for different reasons. My mother dislikes both shows because of the swearing; she gets so offended 🙄Thanks for a lovely video 😊
How the fuck can you dislike a show for portraying how people actually talk?? Are you saying all the main characters in the sopranos have a mental illness? The HBO show in treatment is about mental illness not sopranos
I mean in this day and age you can say anyone has a mental illness but the sopranos was in the late 90s

Almost a million subscribers. Great accomplishment. I have been here from early on. It has been great watching you grow
I just saw the last episode of Tulsa King, and I'm waiting for the 2nd season. Stallone's Dwight Manfredi as an Italian Capo de la Mafia is a perfect combination within a team that's actually not Gangster at all.
So comedy, drama, and ACTION are addictive to watch.
Highly recommended 👌 👍 👏 💯
The Sopranos is the greatest show ever created. Nothing will top it.
The last episode of The Sopranos was perfect. I admit I didn't like it at first. But, after thinking about it, David Chase designed that ending like a choose your own adventure book. David left the ending up to the viewer. You got to choose what happened to Tony. Did Tony die? Did he survive? Was the family killed? Did Meadow watch it and get angry and decide to take revenge? Did Tony go into witness protection? The possibilities are endless and David gave the viewer the chance to write their own ending. That's what makes it phenomenal.
My favourite scenes in the sopranos are usually the ones with "no" problems, such as the one where the crew chilled infront of Satriales. Drank coffe, read newspaper, played cards,..
Im curious how the relationships within an organization really is in terms of friends, reliability and such.
I watched an interview with a german gangster who said "there are no friends....only money". I would love to see a video where you talk about a very "normal" day of buisness back in your days 🙂
The car ride home from the Indian casino was awesome as well
From what I've heard it's very mundane day to day
My favourite is Marco Polo when everyone is chilling at Hughes birthday party and none of it is mob related, just family issues
It was literally the same thing as sopranos… Italian guys drank coffee outside a shop ..
Well apparently when the FBI listened to tapes when they managed to infiltrate mobsters houses or social clubs, it was 1000's of hours of mundane non incriminating shit and maybe an hour or two of incriminating conversations within that 1000's of hours so...
Thanks a lot for this brilliant analysis dear Mr Franzese.
2 charismatic actors with leadership and strength, I love it so much!!
Sopranos will always be number 1 to me TV show wise. However I did enjoy Tulsa king. Last episode was a little cheesy but to be fair the last episode of sopranos was a little abrupt.
Also finished your book it was so enlightening!
You can't tell for sure if Sopranos will always be No.1 for you.
I mean there is a big chance that Michael's show might very possibly "Burn Soprano's pond" as we say.

I have to go along with Tulsa King because anybody who has been around for a while feels very comfortable with Stallone and although he is older now and has had spinal fusion and a few screws here and there and he's back he's still gives an impeccable performance.
Totally fair! The thing I really liked in Sopranos was the moments where everyone was together and just having normal relationships - but you knew in the background there was a bunch of crime going on. I always find that stuff super interesting, I’d like to see more of the “normal days” in Tulsa King

@brain rot The guy is pushing 80 looking stronger than many guys in their 20's and 30's. It's inspiring.
Soon you hit your first million subscriber. Congratulation Michael, great channel.
Agree to disagree on The Sopranos ending, I think it shocked and surprised people and definitely upset or at least confused them at first but upon rewatching I think many people appreciated it. I mean it’s clear Tony dies it’s referenced in an earlier episode in the season when Tony and Bobby are discussing death and come to the conclusion that you probably don’t even know when it happens, that and all the references in the final scene. The godfather reference about the bathroom, the tension of the scene rising, the guy wearing the members only jacket that was referenced earlier in the show about made guys, the line “Strangers blend in” even plays the second the guy walks in behind AJ. The way David Chase put it was that he didn’t think we deserved or needed to see Tony’s head with a hole in it in a bowl of pasta in front of his family or whatever, we watched and cheered Tony on along up until near the end. I also think that scene is so full of tension and the sudden cut to black and silence as Tony looks up is far more disturbing and eerie than a simple scene of him getting whacked would have been. Even the whole final episode is about the decay of that life but also life in general. Like when Tony visits Junior and sees how bad his dementia truly is, everything he chases in such petty ways was not just for nothing, he didn’t even remember it. Anyway that’s just my take, sorry for the long comment. Great video by the way!
Great take on the last episode.
@@danm2400 Thank you.

They need to actually shoot in Tulsa. Like The Sopranos actually was in Jersey and to this day u have Sopranos fans going to where a lot of the show was shot like Tony house

Sopranos for me. I loved how it showed tony being a Mafia boss but also integrated with his family life and effects of living two life's.
Terrance Winter was also a key writer of Boardwalk Empire. For those of you who may not have watched it, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

That's funny .
I grew up in a Mobster family.
Had to witness a lot of things a child should not ,and the day I found out there was a hit on me for revenge on my family and we caught them in the middle of family rivalry and they set up a hit ( and it went through)on the ones that attempted to hit me .Phil Collins ,I can feel it coming in the air tonight always brings back that memory .
I Moved far away shortly after ,just packed up ,changed my name and never looked backed .I never talked to my family again ,I never ratted on them ,just moved on .46 years later as each member of the family is dying off and yes,I would keep up behind the scenes and watch so many inside go to prison .
This is too much to discuss behind a keyboard but the Phil Collins song always brings me back to that as does the AC/DC Dirty Deeds

The Sopranos always holds something special for me. My dad was one of the guys who got indicted during the RICO/early 1980's thing that they mention in the series. I remember guys like the Soprano crew when I was young and I miss having them around. They were colorful people, and generally good-hearted. And once they were gone, those times were lost forever.
Who?
I'm having a hard time getting into Tulsa King....not sure why. I see Stallone and instantly think rocky and sing eye of the tiger!

@@Butterfingers1989 I'm literally singing the song!
@@kayKay-yj2eq Wait till the final of the series... He takes off his shirt grabs a machine gun and he goed full Rambo.
Stallone is great, but when you see him you only see "Stallone" - not the character he's playing (with the possible exception of Copland). Gandolfini WAS Tony Soprano and there was never a moment where that character didn't resonate as authentic to this viewer.
The Sopranos is near the top - if not at the top - of the best shows ever made. It's deep, it scratches your eyes, it hurts, and it pushes you against the wall and takes your breath. It has a massive cast of unforgettable characters with interweaving and solo storylines, fascinating and strong even during episodes when Tony Soprano is barely in it.
Tulsa King, in my opinion, seems to be a pretty formulaic star vehicle for Stallone, notable only for watching how cool he can be at 76 - which, admittedly, is pretty cool. But I never feel like I'm experiencing something real, but rather just watching a great Hollywood star doing his thing.
The two shows aren't comparable. But...ya know...just my opinion. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Came to say the same thing. Just can't believe Stallone as a mobster. His beard also doesn't help.
Michael is the truth, he rationalize things that always make sense to me. I haven't seen Tulsa King but it has big shoes to fill. And I'm not sure I liked the ending in Soprano either. The show was so good it left you wanting better.
I agree totally about Tony Soprano's character seeing a psychiatrist, but I loved the Sopranos characters. 😏👍 Of course it took time also.
@@michaelfranzese I think you better articulated WHY someone in the life would be killed in this video. I had not understood it previously because I had thought it was the diagnosis itself that was a stigma. It is actually the potential to divulge criminal acts. Thanks for the clarification.

Much love for you brother 🙏🏼
Is this really even Fair? To SLY? SOPRANOS GREATEST SHOW OF ALL TIME
Very interesting comparison of the two shows. IMHO seeing the characters in the Sopranos shows a glimpse of everyday life of a Mafia family on the east coast, each one has the same mindset; to earn, know your place, show respect and be respected in a business that doesn’t have a good retirement program. Learning how to swim with sharks everyday. Tulsa King takes the fish out of water scenario of one capo, throwing him into the deep end of an unknown pool and way of life, and watching how he navigates his old school gangster mentality in a completely different and foreign place, seeing how the ripple effect of bringing his way of life and doing business to not so like minded thinkers. It is an interesting and complete 180 perspective of how to navigate the people who’s world he’s trying to fit in...adaptability is the key to survival for Stallone, where as Gandolfini is surrounded by like minded and equally cut throat characters trying to hold their place. Equally great but different shows!
I like how Sopranos ended. In fact, I really can't think of a better ending.
