    V16 ....(and I am an otto link fan) for the most interesting recorded sound. The other factor to consider is how it sounds to the player....these are two very different considerations. If a mouthpiece records great but sounds....odd to the players ear (and inside his/her head)...then the sax player has to make a decision which is most important.

    d'Addario is just superb. Great control, great projection, up and down the range, the clarity is superb, details too, delivery seems almost effortless. I bet you enjoyed it a lot.

    Thanks for the round up. Great work. The D'Addario Select Jazz has a great tone and wonderful intonation. I purchase one and I didn't regret it on bit. And I own more than 40 great mps for the Tenor alone, but the D'Addario Select Jazz become one of my 'go to' mouthpieces. I play loud R&B, Blues, and Rock music mostly, but I can take this mp to any gig, including to quiet jazz ensembles and get the best sound. And as Bob mentioned, when you play soft you get that FAT sound, but when you push it loud it doesn't thin out as other mp would.

    I thought the D'Addario was overall the best in tone quality up and down the horn. Very even sound, didn't get thin up top, which I felt was the weakness of the V16. I liked the beefiness of the V16 in the rest of the horn, but the thinness up top hurt it for me. The Link had a nice sound, but lacked the clarity in articulation of the D'Addario. That's what I heard.

    Hi Bob, I played this great video via my KRK Rokit 5 studio monitors, and the sound was stunning. Unfortunately, I can't really hear a lot of difference - and yes, they all sound like you. I got a Vandoren V16 7, when I was last in your shop (the old one) and I find it smooth but not as loud as some others. I now use a Hanson Music Florida 7*, which has got a dark rich tone and "punch", and it'shalf the price of some pieces out there.

    The Daddario had most focus and the Otto Link was the silkiest in my ears. Vandoren somwhere in between, but had the most individual 'voice'... you sound great on all of them...

    Would be awesome if you just kept the label of which clip is which on there for easy comparison and jumping between examples rather than having to catch the beginning of each example to know for sure what it is.

    Thanks Bob. I really appreciate your feedback on the horns as I am always interested in something that blows like my 10m, but with a modern keyboard and a little more brights. I love that big, fat, and meaty sound. I am so happy you are digging the Merlot mouthpiece and one of the 2 new ones coming out will be out around May 10th. It will be a little bright for what you like, but the 2nd one coming out will be right up your alley! Be well my friend and we will talk soon. Thanks for all you do for the sax community!!!!

    Great video. Well played and well done overall. I still want to add something: as we are all different the mouthpieces tend to have different outcomes with different players as well. When I purchased mouthpieces in the past I usually ordered four similar ones at once. More times than not all four played completely different even though they were supposed to be identical. Just something to keep in mind. I'm sure all three of the ones you played here are great pieces.

    Fantastic! THE comparison vid I have been waiting for. Thanks for posting. As a Conn player myself I also had my eye (ear) on the new d'Addario jazz but I had no idea how it compares to other popular Link like mouthpieces on a Conn. It sounds great indeed! I admitt it takes a good ear to detect the real differences however to me it is obvious the d"Addario sounds fuller as you concluded and has slightly more volume.
    I wonder if it has some nice resistance to lean against. I do not like mouthpieces to be too freeblowing.
    That said I am not sure if I prefer the d'Addario over the Vandoren V16. The vandoren has a special lighter singing quality
    that appeals a lot too.

    • @curlywoodwind
      @curlywoodwind  7 років тому +1

      Hey Cool Jazz thanks for the comments! It's difficult for the "playing experience" to come across with a simple video but the D'Addario was a far superior piece to play (we sell Vandoren, Links etc so I'm not gaining anything by leaning towards that opinion) - much more responsive with just the right amount of resistance for me, having said that all 3 pieces are good and play, it's purely personal taste. D'Addario have really come up with a great mouthpiece at this price point - it feels much more like a "boutique" mouthpiece costing an awful lot more. Well worth trying!

    Great playing, they all sound very similar. I recently tried a Jumbo Java T75 and was very impressed with it in terms of projection, volume and ease to control the notes, but I live in Brazil and can't find a new one here, so I'm considering a V16 T7. My main goal is to play in a horn (brass) section, do you think it would be a good choice? Thank you very much!

    Bob, I tried the D'Addario Jazz Select based on several positive opinions (Jeff Antoniuk, Bret Pimentel, SOTWF). While not bad by any means, especially for $199, I passed on it. It actually sounded brighter than my metal piece when I played it, and I wanted something a bit darker as a second. Also, and this is documented on the web and supposedly acknowledged by D'Addario- the bore is too small and it's something they "...may address...' How do you precision model Jeff Coffin's mouthpiece, even proudly put the specs on the box's diagram, and then use a cork-killing super-tight bore? You sounded good on it! The Vandoren was quite a bit brighter.

    Whats your go to set-up on tenor, Bob? Is the 10m your main horn? how do the Borgain and the RAW Signature tenors compare for you?
    All the best, Mark

    • @curlywoodwind
      @curlywoodwind  7 років тому +2

      Hey Mark, my usual set up is the Conn Chu with one of your hard rubber Merlots 7* and around 3.5 reeds (D'Addario, Alexander ...) see here ua-cam.com/video/Nco1Bqpu__Q/v-deo.html
      RAW signature customs are pretty good - they remind me more of a Selmer Ref 54 than anything else. They're assembled in the U.K. by the Worldwind workshop who also distribute Trevor James instruments - a very versatile sax that can do it all jazz, pop, rock etc. We sell a lot of them!
      The Borgani is quite different, much darker and has a much more spread, fat sound but not as punchy as a Conn - in fact they remind me more of a Buescher. I really like the Borganis - they're very individual sounding/ feeling and there's something nice about a small factory still making saxes the old fashioned way. There's a pretty cool vid of Matt Stohrer on here discussing Borganis.
      Looking forward to trying your new mouthpieces when they come out!! Cheers, Bob

    Hi...first...great sound !!! Very rich and lush. Second question....in in terms of chamber size, is the D'Addario a lot bigger than then the v16? I play a 10M and the v16's T6 and T8 tune very sharp with the mouthpiece very near the end of the cork. I know they are considered a medium chamber. Wondering if the D'Addario is bigger and won't be as sharp and will allow me to tune in the middle of the cork. I read where the 10M needs a large chamber. How does this new piece compare on your Conn.

    • @curlywoodwind
      @curlywoodwind  7 років тому

      Z Abbott thanks for the comments. Yes I think the DSJ has a slightly larger chamber and yes I think it tunes better on my Conn Chu than the V16. Not sure about the large chamber suiting Conns theory - I've heard that recommendation before, but I know a few great Conn players that use smaller chambers and a couple that use old Selmer Soloists with horse shoe chambers as well. Really depends on what suits the individual - I usually favour larger chambers, they just work for me although my main piece at present is a 10mfan Merlot which has a medium large chamber.
      In it's price range I think the D'Addario is pretty hard to beat and well worth having a try on! Hope this helps a little - cheers Bob

      I've been trying out the d'addario 7m on my mauriat and it's been extremely sharp! Then again I've always played metal mouthpieces so perhaps thats just me switching.. I played high e and the tuner gave me an f... I'm considering trying another opening or stronger reed or another mouthpiece for that matter...

    Bob, I currently play and ebonite V16 T7 as my primary piece, and love it, and also a T75 Java. But I've heard so much about the new Jazz Select piece that I've really got the itch to to play one to see if it plays better for me than my V16.
    Have a chance to get a good deal on a 6m jazz select, but am concerned about going down a tip opening size. I realize I could like it and find it easier to play, but also feel I could really not like it.
    What's your thoughts on going from a .105 or T7 V16 down to a .100 6m Jazz Selecr?

    • @brothermanv
      @brothermanv 6 років тому

      Keith Taylor I have a Jumbo Java and am looking for a new piece. The Jumbo Java is very bright and doesn't have as much of a focused sound as I'd like. So, I'm looking for a replacement. How do you like the Java? And how does that compare with the V16? It's hard to find videos of the Java.

    • @seigas

      Hey Keith! How would you compare the V16 to the Java T75? I'm between the two.. my main goal is to play in a horn (brass) section, so I need to blend in and project well at the same time, which one (or another one?) would you recommend? Thanks!

    • @jimmyjazz78

      I have a 6m and 7m in the Jazz Select. My main pieces are a Yanagisawa refaced to .100 and a Link at .105. In my experience, the 6m is very comfortable for me, but tends to play brighter than the 7m. The 7m is the more flexible choice for me because it retains characteristics of both my main pieces. Every time I put the 6m on, I like something about it though...I relax with it more. But it's definitely brighter.
