Love this video Shane - You've convinced me to buy the G9II - I was having issues matching GH6 footage to my S5IIX, I think I am now going to go an trade the GH6 for a G9II. The footage looked lovely. Thank you for always sharing the great info.
Thanks, man! It's been a lot of fun to use and I have no regrets trading in my old gear for this one. It's the best M43 camera I have ever owned. Glad you're digging it as well.
G100 has a great form factor, but with a smaller form factor, it is likely that video performance would not be quite like it is in the G9 II. There needs to be room for a cooling system to be able to deal with modern video capabilities’ demand.@@Sorennn94
Thanks, Mark. It's been a fun camera to use the last few weeks. I've enjoyed using this a lot more than I thought I would have. I hope you're doing well man.
I would love to have an s5ii and g9ii in a kit together. I think there is enough difference that having both would be beneficial. Loved the video. Thank you!
Nice video. I shoot with a GH5II and am fairly happy with micro four thirds so I thought about ordering the G9II. In the end though I decided to order the S5II. I was able to get it on sale with the 20-60mm for slightly cheaper than the G9II standalone. It just made sense. Now I get to enter the world of full frame with a beast of a camera, and use GH5II as a secondary. Super excited by the direction Panasonic is taking. It would be nice to see a couple new M43 lenses though, to show they are still invested in those users for the long-term
Great video as usual. I'm seriously considering upgrading from my G80 to the G9 II but one area of concern is concerts and similar events at night/in low light. I'm happy to bump up the ISO and of course I'll use a fast lens but I don't want to compromise on sharpness. Thoughts/examples anyone?
With a fast lens ,you shouldn't have any problems in low light up to isi 6400. How many times does such light conditions occur? I haven't faced such yet.

Well I think that the G9Ii is a great camera. I was aiming to buy one in Europe during a trip but I wasn't able to get it because it wasn't available anywhere due it is very new. Luckily I got a GH5 mkIi which I think is nothing to be shamed about as you said. Also it cost me almost a half of what the G9Ii was. I think %80 of the specs for almost half the price is a bargain at least for my kind of use .
I am seriously considering trading my S5 IIX and invest in some good Panasonic Leica lenses. I love the G9 ii so much as to everything I ever wanted on a camera. Light, great grip, fantastic sensor and class leasing IBIS, and the 4k 100/120fps too. The autofocus is so much better compared to the S5 IIX. I did want to ask would it be worth trading panleica 12-60mm f2.8-4 for the 12-35mm mk ii? 🤔
I like watching videos where I can see different knockoffs. If it looks well made, it saves time and I can reconsider if I really want to buy it kislux , or buy the real thing. It would be great to keep watching more videos like this if you have the time.
If 90% of my videos are done indoors under studio lighting do you think the G9ii would be a fine upgrade? I already own mf3 lenses, but debating if the switch to FF is worth it?
Thanks for the video! I wish Panasonic had fixed the audio interference problem on the G9II, which has been affecting the audio signal path since the PDAF was introduced. Recordings with an external microphone on the S5II and S5IIx are disturbed by a low, high-frequency pulsating noise. Maybe I'm wrong, but my G9II now seems to have introduced some kind of frequency cancellation when recording with an external microphone, which makes the recorded audio sound tinny. Did you film the take "My only gripe so far" with the S5II and the take "Overheating & Photograph" with the G9II? Then you might hear what I mean by "tinny".
I haven't noticed that. Usually, interference is related to some sort of wifi or poorly insulated cables. I've shot with this a bunch with a wireless pack directly to the camera without any issues but haven't recorded/tested any external mics. I shot the entire last video with the G9II with the same audio pack but the levels might not have been set up the same between both cameras. I'll check it out cheers.
I have to say, I understand why people say they don't care about people buying fakes or counterfeit goods, or why people should care. However, people don't necessarily "care" about people who own fake goods. Smart people will buy bags at kislux . In fact, people who have money to buy luxury goods and invest in them do so for a reason.
I really need some advice. I wanna make film and photography a career and I’ve had a Panasonic g85 for about 4 years as my first camera but it’s just not cutting it anymore. I wanna primarily do video projects, more like short films, but I do like doing photo shoots and just photography in general. I’m just having a hard time figuring out what camera to get as I’m obviously on a budget so I can’t really buy two cameras like what others have recommended. For example they use the g9ii as a B cam and something like a s5iix as their main. I only use micro 4/3 and have 4 lenses already so it just makes sense for me to still use micro 4/3 for now. Would a g9ii be better or the gh6?
I've owned a few G85 cameras and the G9II will be a huge upgrade in terms of quality, resolutions, autofocus, colour science, and features. The slow motion out of the G9II is so good and it'll be a lot better in terms of low light than the G85. That said, the GH6 has active cooling and if you plan on shooting for hours at a time it'll be the better choice - but the win goes to the G9II.
Hey Shane great video. I would like to request a long form video comparing the G9II to the FX-30 as those are the 2 cameras I am currently looking to potentially purchase.
You have shown that you don't get the wobble with the g9m2, but I still wonder about the s5m2. If you shoot in aps-c mode on the s5m2, will the crop get rid of the wobble at the edges? At what mm is your wobble? Thank you.
Panasonic said they replaced the fan on the S5II with a new gyroscope sensor on the G9II, which allowed them to electronically correct for the flapping/wobble and also added a EIS strong mode to emulate gimbals, but with a tighter crop (9% vs 25%). The S5II only has the regular EIS, which is just to smoothen the bumps.
It's probably not something you'd feel like getting around to but I'd love to see dynamic range comparisons between the G9 and mkii, and an EIS test with an ultra wide like a 7mm to see if it really kills all the wobble.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Just watched it, that's awesome! Thanks! Also, sorry to barrage you with questions, is there no DR Boost at 120 fps at all in the G9ii or is it like the GH6 where you just have to be at a higher ISO to activate it?
DR Boost is automatic on this camera so you don't have to set it up like the GH6 - this has a new sensor. You get 13+ Stops of dynamic range unless you're shooting 4k120p where it reduces to 12 - it still looks great though. @@BryanPopeProductions
Shane.. thanks so much for this review as I'm now considering upgrading from the G9. Have you tried using the the om 40-150 f2.8 on a G9ii body and found compatibility issues? I understand that the fxn button on the lens will not work but other than that, I’ve not read about any downsides, particularly related to focusing speed and reliability. Any advice would be most appreciated!
I haven’t tried that lens before but it’ll work fine otherwise from what I hear. The focus system is supposed to work great with any of the Olympus and sigma lenses.
Hi there - The G9II doesn't have direct to web streaming like the GH5II does, so you'll need a live streaming solution or capture card. The camera is great to use. It's got a way better grip than the original GH5 and it's on par grip-wise with the S5II, Sony FX3, and a few others I've owned. If you've used any LUMIX gear you'll feel right at home.

@@GeekyNerdyTechy yes, aspecially after i always hear very subtle movement or noise on og g9 and om1/5 when i use g9ii sensor cleaning is so rough hahhaa.. but is all good apparently thats due to "new mechanism" but thx again for the test
What are your thoughts on the quality of the 200p FHD footage (HFR)? I get very bad results, and I am wondering what the heck I might be doing wrong... Interestingly enough, I get the same results on the GH6. The image just isn't sharp, even nasty looking, especially visible on straight lines/edges.
I don’t often shoot anything over 4k120p where the image quality looks great. I don’t like the HFR frame rates on these camera. I mentioned that in my initial review that it falls apart once you’re in the manual focus modes.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thanks, mate! You are right, the VFR mode at 300p with only manual focus sucks, although it can still be useful whenever the ultra slow mo effect is worth the loss of IQ. However, I thought the HFR FHD at 200p, which is a regular shooting mode just like C4K 100/120p, where you can shoot in 4:2:2 10bit and continuous AF, would provide a much better image. Also, I see many examples on youtube with a decent looking image, which had me confused. I think I will stick to C4k100p as well, and use "optical flow" if I want the footage even slower ;-)
SHANE..X2 Questions PLEASE #1 Is the G9II The Same Exact Body as The S5II ? #2 Does The G9II Have a Built-in Cooling Fan & is it in The Same Exact PLACE as Noted on The S5II ? THANK You SHANE 🙂
Great review as always: Can you please do a comparison between G9ii and Sony FX30? a comprehensive one. because The only way you can get Non-heating Video camera in a Sony is the FX range.
Hi Shane, the footage looks stellar. I assume you’re shooting in ‘aperture’ priority. I’ve been brainwashed by so many UA-camrs who swear you can only create a good video if you shoot using the 180 degree rule using ND filters. While this is the best way to get the “cinematic” look, it’s a right pain in the butt. Your videos are proof that shooting hassle-free from fiddling with ND filters is a valid alternative. Cheers
Thanks mate. I generally use Aperture priority mode to keep things simple and I will still use an ND when shooting outside, but that's it. I use the 180 degree shutter speed when I am in the studio or in controlled conditions, but never outside anymore. Most people can't tell the difference watching. Cheers :)
Hi Shane, thanks for this content... By thé way, did you post a vidéo comparing outside shots Taken with a VND filtre @ 180° vs without any filtre and lower angle ? If not, I'll bé very interested. Thanks
The G9II has the DR Boost feature built into the sensor so it's always on unless you're shooting above 60p. On the GH6, you have to turn that on to get the best results which bumps the ISO up to 2000 in Vlog and 800 from memory in the normal picture profiles. The Advantage goes to the G9II there, but otherwise the end result is very similar. I still think the GH6 has some of the best color science of any camera out there. The G9II just makes the process a lot easier thanks to better autofocus and not having to worry about DR Boost.
So are you seeing visible improvement in low iso. It is now difficult to use my gh6. Using dyn boost makes too noisy and not using It is a pity because gh6 has so clever feature. In fact dyn boost is not increasing dyn range because there is no latitude in darks at iso2000.
I gotcha. I'm a big fan of Pana MFT and have quite the investment in lenses. Rumor is GH7 will have inbuilt ND filter. That's going to be worth the wait for me.@@GeekyNerdyTechy
They do have a number of primes at f1.4, but their zooms wouldn’t offer anything over what’s already available from Panasonic or Olympus/OM Systems, so probably not worth their while.
M43 lenses are going super cheap on the used market too, people are selling it for Sony A9M3 the best camera ever conceived by baby Jesus. Well, let them waste their pension on that, I grabbed a whole bunch of M43 lenses for 70% off, hard to say no thanks to that! The 12-60mm F2.8-4 is also another brilliant lens for the system.
Love my s5ii, but the micro 4 thirds sure does look tempting. Lapel mics are cheap! Gotta lose that massive dead cat hanging off your shirt, it ruins an otherwise pro looking video. Nice to see Perth represented so nicely too.
So far, after a month of using G9II... let's say I am kinda disappointed... AFC setting is pain in the *** and it will take a time to try all possibilities and set it right... on original G9 I was using AFF (sadly missing on G9II) when taking photos of my kids and lets say 80% of what I take was in focus... on G9II with AFC 20% is in focus (talking about kids playing around, bobsleding - meaning moving towards me)... perhaps I am missing something out... But I had G80, G90, G9 always used AFF and always was satisfied with outcome... Now with G9II I am not :-( If someone can enlighten me, give advice... I will be thrilled... otherwise the camera is a beast and autofocus is really fast (but out)...
If you're tracking people turn the human detection on. It'll bring up a yellow box around the subject. If you're shooting photos just turn it on from the photo -> focus options in the menu. Also take into account old lenses like the 20mm F1.7 will still perform bad as that had near zero AFC. I hope this helps.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thanks for quick response. Human body/eye detection is always on and tracking works just fine. Yet when I take a photo of moving object it's usually out of focus... I'm using mainly 35-100mm F2.8mk2 and sigma 56mm f1.4 (around f2.0-2.2)... It's frustrating... I have to look at "AF prediction" setting perhaps it helps... Or perhaps my unit is faulty...
If you need a specific area in focus try the one area plus mode. I tested it for burst photography in my initial review on a moving subject and the hit rate was nearly perfect. I haven't tested sigma before but try putting a one area box up over someones face and giving that a shot. @@nejlidr870

😍 I imagine a New Version of the Revolutionary Lumix GHS Line. A Lumix GH6-S, a camera with A new M43 Sensor with a x1.7 crop factor, instead the x1.8 crop of the GH5S, or the x2 crop traditional m43. Without the need of any Speedbooster.🚫 Where, the Panasonic 10-25mm f1.7 lens would become a Panasonic 17-42mm f2.8 lens fullframe equivalent, and the 25-50mm f1.7 lens would go equivalently to a 42-85mm f2.8 lens. OMG!!🫶😍 The Panasonic 45,5mm f1.2 lens , would be a 72mm f2.0 lens fullframe equivalent. Even the Panasonic 25mm f1.4 lens, would go to a 42mm f2.3 lens fullframe equivalent. That would be insane, revolutionary!! 😍🙌🏾

Awesome mate! Perth's a beautiful place. It's a lot nicer than here in Melbourne. I always look forward to going over there. Not a problem it was a shock to hear the sensor cleaning mode haha.@@throughtanlens
@@GeekyNerdyTechy yes, aspecially after i always hear very subtle movement or noise on og g9 and om1/5
when i use g9ii sensor cleaning is so rough hahhaa.. but is all good apparently thats due to "new mechanism" but thx again for the test
Now I want to add a g9ii every time I get out of m43 I always end up jumping back in lol. Just shooting the s5ii now and almost added a fx30.
bought it next to the OM1 - which is still my to go body for stills (wildlife with the Pro Olympus lenses) - for video the G9II is way better...
I LOVE my G9II; I sold my GH6 ot get it. It is MUCH BETTER FOCUSING than the GH6 or GH5II.
SHANE..X2 Questions PLEASE
#1 Is the G9II The Same Exact Body as The S5II ?
#2 Does The G9II Have a Built-in Cooling Fan & is it in The Same Exact PLACE as Noted on The S5II ?
THANK You SHANE 🙂
It’s the same body design but not 100% the same as there’s no fan. They used that section of the camera for the improved Gyro sensor.
Great review as always: Can you please do a comparison between G9ii and Sony FX30? a comprehensive one. because The only way you can get Non-heating Video camera in a Sony is the FX range.
Its in the works :)
Thanks
Love it! Thanks!
Great video but I missed something about low light performance.
This is just a follow up after I purchased one. Check out this video - ua-cam.com/video/sUmJKiYcBe0/v-deo.html
Can you say is there any visible improvement in video quality ovet gh6?
Congratulations ‘ nice choice ‘ at this moment the best micro 4/3 camera. Think to get one later if gh7 will not come out at this moment.
Great video
Thanks!
Thought you might’ve hung out for the GH7.
Waiting for something that might be a few years off is no fun.
I gotcha. I'm a big fan of Pana MFT and have quite the investment in lenses.
Rumor is GH7 will have inbuilt ND filter.
That's going to be worth the wait for me.@@GeekyNerdyTechy
Why Sigma don't make new len's for 4/3?
Because 4/3 is dead.
Just give the same features in a full frame body panny❤
thank you :)
That windshield looks MASSIVE.
It gets windy there in the afternoons and it's all I had as I forgot to bring a Lav mic haha.
Love my s5ii, but the micro 4 thirds sure does look tempting. Lapel mics are cheap! Gotta lose that massive dead cat hanging off your shirt, it ruins an otherwise pro looking video. Nice to see Perth represented so nicely too.
Also, The Rock Inn has never looked so good!!
If one is not a bokeh fetishist this is as close to a perfect camera as you can get in 2024.
Now with G9II I am not :-(
If someone can enlighten me, give advice...
It will be my main camera.
Didnt this guy just post a video less than 5 days ago about barely getting the camera and now he's already making a "definitive" review on it?? That's waaaaaaay too soon to know if it's gonna be a proper long term investment X.x
It's not a long term review. It's a user experience review on my testing with it for the job I wanted it for.
He already made a review during the launch of the camera. So this definitely isn't his first Rodeo with this camera
If Panasonic did a street style GXX I would buy it straight off..
Mate, if you are still in Perth, can I buy you a beer, and compare notes. Thanks heaps.
If only they were both the same mount it would have been a good 1-2 combo
Interesting idea but mft lenses would be useless on fullframe, a 40mp sensor with m43 crop gets only 10mp resolution
😍 I imagine a New Version of the Revolutionary Lumix GHS Line. A Lumix GH6-S, a camera with A new M43 Sensor with a x1.7 crop factor, instead the x1.8 crop of the GH5S, or the x2 crop traditional m43.
Without the need of any Speedbooster.🚫
Where, the Panasonic 10-25mm f1.7 lens would become a Panasonic 17-42mm f2.8 lens fullframe equivalent, and the 25-50mm f1.7 lens would go equivalently to a 42-85mm f2.8 lens. OMG!!🫶😍
The Panasonic 45,5mm f1.2 lens , would be a 72mm f2.0 lens fullframe equivalent.
Even the Panasonic 25mm f1.4 lens, would go to a 42mm f2.3 lens fullframe equivalent.
That would be insane, revolutionary!! 😍🙌🏾
That would be amazing for sure! Nice!
2:33 holy PULSE Batman
on the slow-motion clip? I think it was using DFD for that clip sadly. haha.
Well, interesting video, but the title was "Did My LUMIX G9II Live Up To Expectations?" So what were your expectations and did it live up to them? That question was never answered....
The overall gist is, did it work for my purpose - yes.
