Hey! So sorry - I actually haven't had that issue before. You can check how much storage you have left right on the SPD - it is in the utilities menu. Not sure if that helps haha
I had a confirmation by Roland that the problem of erratic random playback behavior when you play on top of a wav file running in the SPD is due to the SPD board that is malfunctionning. They have no solution as yet.
That sounds about like Roland...Love their products but their costumer support has not been the best over the years. Hopefully they figure out something soon.

Hey @Tim Buell. Thanks for the video. I have one more question. I have saved the complete folder „Roland“ on the SPD-SX drive on my Mac as a backup. After deleting i wanted to put the folder back, but now it says, that there is not enough storage on the SPDSX even if there is not one single file on it. On information it says, that the internal storage is about 4GB but only 1,7GB free. Do you know how to really delete all files from the spdsx?
In the meantime I was able to solve the problem. You just have to load the factory settings onto the spdsx with a usb stick. The method I used before is not fully deleting the memory.
Hi , I was trying import two different wave files on my Roland spdsx but when I tried to play the pad the sound come out the same even when it’s showing different name on it
I just got the SPD SX-Pro today and it seems like everything is working fine except for Layer B on the ninth pad, both layers work fine and you can chane them on every other pad except for the bottom right pad, if you turn off Layer A then it just doesnt play whatever you have selected on layer b
@@TimBuell there was no issue it was that the ninth pad was set to hi-hat control requiring a pedal in order to be able to hear the other layer, but I really didn't want to have hi-hat on right side because I'm left-handed so I switched the hi-hat to the left side (seventh pad) and tried to switch the 9th pad to the bass drum, which works completely fine if you just switch hi hat control to the seventh pad and then turn off hi hat control for the 9th pad, thanks so much for your response my friend!🙏🥁💙
Hi I see You are very competent, so maybe You have an answear for my problem: My spdsx is not always playing my sample. It's a backing track about 1:50min long. No matter which pad I put it in, sometimes it triggers sometimes not. I tried to reload the sample, nothing works. Do You think lenght is the problem? For sure it;s not the pad, on other presets everything works well :/ Please help!
If you're taking "waw format is not supported" error despite you already apply 44.1 khz and 16 bit settings, You have to convert your waw file to ALAC format. After that, you have to convert back this ALAC file to Waw file again. You will see, your problem will be solved.
Also one fix i sorted out myself I had this problem where I was playing samples on and when i’d jump from pad to pad they would shut off and stop playing the samples, couldn’t hit 2 pads at the same time without them cancelling each other out. Turns out that the pads were in a “Mute Group” so when you’d play one it’d turn the other off. lucky the song i was using the samples for didnt have a backing track but I could imagine how frustrated mute groups would be if there was backing tracks.
I play my spd as a full drumkit and I noticed the pads are being worn down. Last week I noticed that one pad is double triggering out of no where and I tried every setting and I think it's because the pad is worn away :( Please tell me if you know how to fix this

I have a question about SPD-SX , I want to play with the metronome on while Im recording on a ZOOM H5 but when I import my files into my daw the metronome sound is recorded. Is there a way to play with the metronome on but when I record onto the ZOOM H5 that the metronome doesnt print into my wave file?

I'm using SPD-SX But if the file name exceeds 5 characters, it doesn't seem to recognize after that. For example, if you import files 'timpaniC.wav', 'timpaniD.wav', it recognizes only 'timpa' and recognizes all files as the same file. Is there any way to fix this error?
Hi! I have exported several files to my thumb drive using iTunes. However, it doesn’t remove metadata. So I used Audacity for that. I can see the file is on my flash drive, but the Roland won’t recognize it. What do I do?
Hm. Honestly I'm a bit stumped. I don't believe metadata matters to the SPD-SX, only the sample rate and bit depth. (I could be wrong though). Are you sure that iTunes is exporting .wav files and not .mp3 or something else? Sorry if that sounds too basic but I always have to remember to switch those settings before I export.
I was hoping that you could help me out. I bought an SPD-SX, and I have 3 triggers associated with it. I have the RT-30HR going into Trig 1/2. (This trigger works perfectly)The BT-1 and the RT-30K are both going into Trig 3/4 with a splitter. I believe that I might have the wrong splitter because I need to go to setup and program my BT-1 as a KT-10 and my RT-30K as an RT-30K for it to work. (The splitter that I have is a Roland Male 1/4” stereo going to 2x Female 1/4” mono) It works, but I need to set the threshold to 20 on both the RT-30K and the BT-1 in order for there to be no mistriggering which I don’t want to do. Should I be buying the Roland PCS-31L instead of the splitter that I currently have? Will the PCS-31L fix this issue?

Right but... setting to MONO means that the sound will cut off the previous one... not exactly a fix? It can do 16 'voices' polyphony... I wonder if that's actually only 8 sounds at the same time if the files are stereo? Therefore, if you do a lot of fills, you can easily hit that?
I would go to the Roland website and make sure that you don't need a particular "driver" for the SPD-SX with your operating system. Just find the SPD-SX SE on their site and their should be some sort of tab labeled "downloads".

When I bounce out my samples/audio from the DAW (Ableton), I just render them at the right sample rate/ bit depth. You should be able to do that in all DAW´s i guess.
True. In my experience, even when I have the right settings, sometimes the SPD still doesn't like it. So my "fool proof" way is to run it through iTunes or something that is pretty much dummy proof.
hey mate, i'm diggin your videos. I was wondering if you are able to do a video on how to attach add-on triggers? I have the kick, but I see videos and the snare always looks like its attached to the SPD, and its the same with another pad to the left of the snare, that one looks like its attached somehow too. Then there is the stand thing at the back corcer and that goes up a bit and you can use any trigger on it. But I can't find any vidoes explaining how this is done, do I need a new stand? Two new stands?...
Hey! I do plan on doing a video on triggers and external pads at some point. All of the triggers and extra stuff will connect to the SPD via the "Trig In" section on the back of the unit. Whatever external pads you need plug in there and you'll just need to find a stand or mount to put the external pad on. Hope that helps!
can i sample what i play on the pads and put it in loop? i know you can loop from an external source but no one is talking about the possibility of loop a drum section while playing it.
Hi. Thanks for your videos. I’m having an issue with my unit since some of the pads are much less sensitives than the others which doesn’t let me do snare rolls for instance. I have been checking all the settings like pad sens, dynamic, one shots but can’t fix the problem. Could it be due to the years of service?

I’ve been trying to get to the bottom of random glitches that happen where the beat will all of a sudden sound scrambled. Are you recommending using iTunes to convert wavs even if they’ve been exported from ProTools at 44.1/16? Thanks again for your time.
Hey Man, I actually tried to switch the mono/poly settings of all the waves in each kit but occasionally my roland keep crashing randomly in different tracks, forcing me to cut the backing track while I'm playing live....I tried this with two different SPDSX and I've got the same problem with both! All the backing tracks and samples in my spdsx are in the right format 44-100khz 16 bits. This is getting me crazy .
Yeah there is def a limit to what the Roland can "multi task" no matter what you do unfortunately. The mono/poly will help but if the backing tracks are long enough and the samples are complicated enough I think it'll freak the SPD out no matter what.
@@TimBuell Thanks for the video, Tim. The SPD-SX can play eight simultaneous stereo samples (16 voices) at once. I had researched this issue a while back and found that even when switching my samples to mono (the backing track included) if you play samples too quickly your backing track will get shut off. As you said, you'll need to be careful about the length of the samples you're using, and how long they are.
How about stopping it from LOOPING?!? My gawd...I go into the menu and set it to Loop = OFF. But I see no place to SAVE or anything. As soon as I go out, it's still looping. I go back in and, sure enough, it's still set to LOOP. How can they make it this user UNFRIENDLY? I mean, way to go! 👀

Hey, sometime when using this pad to run backing tracks we notice that the volume is sometimes inconsistent for example one track is normal and then the next time we play it’s quieter. But then if we turn the pad off and on it usually fixed the problem. Obviously this isn’t ideal in a live setting. Any ideas on what’s happening?

Lately I was facing the issue that I wanted my clicktrack on pad 2 and the band playback on pad1 - both tempo synced so I could play it faster or slower if it is needed. Now I also got a "voice over" which I put on the sub of pad2. Now I am facing the issue that they are not synced. So may voice over ist lunching randomly and totally out of time with the click... Does anyone else face that problem or know if the timesync is also transferred to the sub of a pad? Thanks allot for your help and your videos!!!
Is there a way to adjust the pad Volume of all the pads on every kit at the same time? I'm asking because it is very annoying when I have a sample that is not quite loud enough, I have to turn all the other 8 pads down to make up for it. If i could change the pad volume default to lets say 80, I could just turn up this one pad that is too quiet.... Or is there a better way to do this?
Not to my knowledge. That would be where the computer software might come in handy. SPD-SX editor is a program that I know let's you do that. You still have to do it for every kit, but it is probably quicker in that interface than on the Roland itself.
SpiffaJ possibly, but it also depends on how powerful your laptop’s RAM/CPU is. I’ve started just running my backing tracks from abelton at this point because my spdsx kept on messing up on stage, where as I can just press play and go with the laptop. I’ve started just playing one shot samples only with the spdsx because I was experiencing a lot of problems with retriggering and audio cutting out. I’ll run audio separately out of the laptop and the spdsx to front of house and let them equalize the audio, rather than using an audio interface live. While it’s annoying having to bring the laptop back on stage to run things, it just simply works and I’ve only had an issue with it crashing once in a rehearsal. As long as you charge it to 100% before a show or better yet have it plugged in and haven’t been using it non stop all day before your set, the laptop will do just fine

One question: I've just tried putting all my samples in one file on my usb drive (cause there's a lot of them.. and i don't want my usb drive to be clattered) but my spd-sx will only receive samples if I load them on my usb drive individually one by one, as their own file. Am I doing something wrong? or will the spd-sx just not register the samples on my usb drive unless they're singular and not all grouped together in one file? Thank you for your time!
You can load multiple samples onto the SPD from a flash drive - you just have to be sure you have saved them to the correct file on your USB. You have to nest the files on the USB where the SPD looks for them, if you don't it might not work properly. If that makes sense.
09-23-16, 08:49 PM Hi, I've been usng my SPD-SX for about 9 months and it's been flawless until yesterday. Yesterday, I plugged it in to begin practice and the overall output volume diminished to about half of what it had always been, even the day before, so much that it couldn't even be heard over the rest of the band. The click volume is still loud, in headphones the volume is fine, but the main output is the issue. I've tried multiple different cables, speakers, etc., I've increased the gain in system preferences, all to no avail to bring the volume back where it had always been. It seems something is up with the machine itself. Any ideas what could be going on? Hoping to figure it out before the next gig next week. Any help or ideas is wildly appreciated! Thanks!
If you have bumped up the volume every way possible (the knob on the unit and individual gains) then you might have a bad main output. I would put in a support request with Roland. If your unit is that new, sounds like a manufacturing issue. I had a similar thing. I would have the unit on for a 90 minute show and it would randomly turn off 2 or 3 times throughout the show. Sent it in and they sent me a new one. But, fair warning, Roland's support is not the best (unfortunately) so best of luck.
Additionally, I would send it in to Roland BEFORE taking it apart and trying to fix it yourself. That will void any warranty you might have still. Probably obvious, but figured I'd state the obvious!
Been using The Special Edition for a few years now and only just realised there's now way of velocity triggering between two samples! I was going to set up some percussion patches (2 round robins of a conga say) assign one to the main pad and other to the sub, then instead of the combined sound, velocity switch between to two for a more realistic sound. BUT you cant it seems....or can you?? Correct me if Im wrong but you could even do this on the old one couldnt you? Wave A and B on a pad then velocity switching option.. did I make that up?!
I'll give this a try! Been having issues with my new pad. I use it as a drumkit, and a few times a night when I'm playing a basic beat, the sounds will start playing a second later. I've used 2 other spd-sx pads in the past and neither ever did this. I'm wondering if it's something with the firmware 1.08? My prior 2 pads were 1.05, and I doubt there's a way for me to backdate the new one back to 1.05?

Not so simple a fix really as some types of samples aren't practical for mono setting like drum sounds that are meant to sustain beyond the next hit. Hi hats in mono don't sound great
Hey Tim - thanks for this video :) Have you ever had the issue where you get a formatting issue on startup? When you try to format it, it says there is an error formatting and this error continues when you turn off and on again.... I have tried plugging in my computer and also a USB however this formatting error still shows. I can't reset the pad meaning it's 100% useless at the moment. the pad :(
Hey Matthew. That sounds like a really frustrating situation. I've never experienced it, but at first glance, it sounds like the internal memory on your unit might be defective or have become corrupted. I would reach out to Roland's service department and start a ticket to try and get it fixed. I've sent a few things back before to have them repair them.
Probably should learn about what you’re actually trying to teach first. Just sayin’. Despite the lack of terminology and knowledge, this is still a good high-quality educational video that will be helpful for some.

I make these videos for people who (like me) actually don’t want to know the names of things, specific terms, etc. They just want a solution for the actual things they will need to know for their upcoming gig. I’ve used these units live for 10+ years on stages all around the world and I absolutely don’t know every term/setting in the unit. I’m just trying to pass info to someone who might get some help from what I’ve learned. If that isn’t your thing and you want a bit more “science” - 100% get it, I might not be your person.
@@tylerbaker1292 Yeah. That's one of the biggest reasons I love iTunes is because you can export everything you need to load on and then just run them all through iTunes at once.
If you are going to give a good fix for something in life you don’t need to put an ogle face in your video display. Always a happy face is better to invite to see your video.
I would check to be sure your pads aren't "panned" to left or right. As well, try using a different cable/set of headphones. Sometimes the headphone cable gives out and leaves you with only one side.

Should I be buying the Roland PCS-31L instead of the splitter that I currently have? Will the PCS-31L fix this issue?

Right but... setting to MONO means that the sound will cut off the previous one... not exactly a fix? It can do 16 'voices' polyphony... I wonder if that's actually only 8 sounds at the same time if the files are stereo? Therefore, if you do a lot of fills, you can easily hit that?

I would go to the Roland website and make sure that you don't need a particular "driver" for the SPD-SX with your operating system. Just find the SPD-SX SE on their site and their should be some sort of tab labeled "downloads".
Hi! here is my problem, if i rent a spd sx for a gig out of town and i download my own wavs from my usb key and after the show i want to quickly delete or reset all the wavs or kits, without the delete one by one, do you know how to do it.. thank you very much because I can't find the answer in the user manual, have a nice day
I'm doing all the steps, but after putting the audios into the wav manager, and even changing the drum kit name, it is not showing on the spdsx.
Try loading your sounds from a USB flashdrive and see if you can get them to show up there.
When I bounce out my samples/audio from the DAW (Ableton), I just render them at the right sample rate/ bit depth. You should be able to do that in all DAW´s i guess.
True. In my experience, even when I have the right settings, sometimes the SPD still doesn't like it. So my "fool proof" way is to run it through iTunes or something that is pretty much dummy proof.

hey mate, i'm diggin your videos. I was wondering if you are able to do a video on how to attach add-on triggers?
I have the kick, but I see videos and the snare always looks like its attached to the SPD, and its the same with another pad to the left of the snare, that one looks like its attached somehow too. Then there is the stand thing at the back corcer and that goes up a bit and you can use any trigger on it. But I can't find any vidoes explaining how this is done, do I need a new stand? Two new stands?...
Hey! I do plan on doing a video on triggers and external pads at some point. All of the triggers and extra stuff will connect to the SPD via the "Trig In" section on the back of the unit. Whatever external pads you need plug in there and you'll just need to find a stand or mount to put the external pad on.

can i sample what i play on the pads and put it in loop? i know you can loop from an external source but no one is talking about the possibility of loop a drum section while playing it.
I believe you can but I never really use the "live sample" feature on the SPD-SX. Sorry!
Hi. Thanks for your videos. I’m having an issue with my unit since some of the pads are much less sensitives than the others which doesn’t let me do snare rolls for instance. I have been checking all the settings like pad sens, dynamic, one shots but can’t fix the problem. Could it be due to the years of service?

I have 1 question... I use the SPD to trigger looped beats. I’ve been trying to get to the bottom of random glitches that happen where the beat will all of a sudden sound scrambled. Are you recommending using iTunes to convert wavs even if they’ve been exported from ProTools at 44.1/16?

I still recommend running it through iTunes. For some reason it seems to play the best (for me) with the SPD.
Hey Man, I actually tried to switch the mono/poly settings of all the waves in each kit but occasionally my roland keep crashing randomly in different tracks, forcing me to cut the backing track while I'm playing live....I tried this with two different SPDSX and I've got the same problem with both!
All the backing tracks and samples in my spdsx are in the right format 44-100khz 16 bits.
This is getting me crazy .
Yeah there is def a limit to what the Roland can "multi task" no matter what you do unfortunately. The mono/poly will help but if the backing tracks are long enough and the samples are complicated enough I think it'll freak the SPD out no matter what.
@@TimBuell Thanks for the video, Tim. The SPD-SX can play eight simultaneous stereo samples (16 voices) at once. I had researched this issue a while back and found that even when switching my samples to mono (the backing track included) if you play samples too quickly your backing track will get shut off. As you said, you'll need to be careful about the length of the samples you're using, and how long they are.
If you have 2 spdsx's then use one for samples and one for backing/click tracks. Walah no more going crazy. You're welcome
How about stopping it from LOOPING?!? My gawd...I go into the menu and set it to Loop = OFF. But I see no place to SAVE or anything. As soon as I go out, it's still looping. I go back in and, sure enough, it's still set to LOOP. How can they make it this user UNFRIENDLY? I mean, way to go! 👀
Hey Tim, I’m having a strange issue where I load/assign my backing track and click track files to separate pads say 1 and 2, then when I go to play the pad, both pads 1 and 2 will trigger the same file even though they’re completely different. This ever happened to you? Thanks!

Hey, sometime when using this pad to run backing tracks we notice that the volume is sometimes inconsistent for example one track is normal and then the next time we play it’s quieter. But then if we turn the pad off and on it usually fixed the problem. Obviously this isn’t ideal in a live setting. Any ideas on what’s happening?
Try turning “dynamics” off on whatever pads the tracks are assigned to.

Lately I was facing the issue that I wanted my clicktrack on pad 2 and the band playback on pad1 - both tempo synced so I could play it faster or slower if it is needed. Now I also got a "voice over" which I put on the sub of pad2. Now I am facing the issue that they are not synced. So may voice over ist lunching randomly and totally out of time with the click... Does anyone else face that problem or know if the timesync is also transferred to the sub of a pad?

I believe you’ll need an interface so you can run 1/4” cable out of the “main output” from the SPD-SX into the interface so Reaper can record it.
Is there a way to adjust the pad Volume of all the pads on every kit at the same time? I'm asking because it is very annoying when I have a sample that is not quite loud enough, I have to turn all the other 8 pads down to make up for it.
If i could change the pad volume default to lets say 80, I could just turn up this one pad that is too quiet....
Or is there a better way to do this?
Not to my knowledge. That would be where the computer software might come in handy. SPD-SX editor is a program that I know let's you do that. You still have to do it for every kit, but it is probably quicker in that interface than on the Roland itself.

Would triggering your clicks and samples via midi connected to a laptop DAW solve the problem?
SpiffaJ possibly, but it also depends on how powerful your laptop’s RAM/CPU is. I’ve started just running my backing tracks from abelton at this point because my spdsx kept on messing up on stage, where as I can just press play and go with the laptop. I’ve started just playing one shot samples only with the spdsx because I was experiencing a lot of problems with retriggering and audio cutting out.
I’ll run audio separately out of the laptop and the spdsx to front of house and let them equalize the audio, rather than using an audio interface live.
While it’s annoying having to bring the laptop back on stage to run things, it just simply works and I’ve only had an issue with it crashing once in a rehearsal. As long as you charge it to 100% before a show or better yet have it plugged in and haven’t been using it non stop all day before your set, the laptop will do just fine

One question:
I've just tried putting all my samples in one file on my usb drive (cause there's a lot of them.. and i don't want my usb drive to be clattered) but my spd-sx will only receive samples if I load them on my usb drive individually one by one, as their own file. Am I doing something wrong? or will the spd-sx just not register the samples on my usb drive unless they're singular and not all grouped together in one file?

You can load multiple samples onto the SPD from a flash drive - you just have to be sure you have saved them to the correct file on your USB. You have to nest the files on the USB where the SPD looks for them, if you don't it might not work properly. If that makes sense.

I've been usng my SPD-SX for about 9 months and it's been flawless until yesterday.
Yesterday, I plugged it in to begin practice and the overall output volume diminished to about half of what it had always been, even the day before, so much that it couldn't even be heard over the rest of the band. The click volume is still loud, in headphones the volume is fine, but the main output is the issue. I've tried multiple different cables, speakers, etc., I've increased the gain in system preferences, all to no avail to bring the volume back where it had always been. It seems something is up with the machine itself.
Any ideas what could be going on? Hoping to figure it out before the next gig next week. Any help or ideas is wildly appreciated!

If you have bumped up the volume every way possible (the knob on the unit and individual gains) then you might have a bad main output. I would put in a support request with Roland. If your unit is that new, sounds like a manufacturing issue.
I had a similar thing. I would have the unit on for a 90 minute show and it would randomly turn off 2 or 3 times throughout the show. Sent it in and they sent me a new one. But, fair warning, Roland's support is not the best (unfortunately) so best of luck.
Additionally, I would send it in to Roland BEFORE taking it apart and trying to fix it yourself. That will void any warranty you might have still. Probably obvious, but figured I'd state the obvious!

Been using The Special Edition for a few years now and only just realised there's now way of velocity triggering between two samples! I was going to set up some percussion patches (2 round robins of a conga say) assign one to the main pad and other to the sub, then instead of the combined sound, velocity switch between to two for a more realistic sound. BUT you cant it seems....or can you?? Correct me if Im wrong but you could even do this on the old one couldnt you? Wave A and B on a pad then velocity switching option.. did I make that up?!
I'll give this a try! Been having issues with my new pad. I use it as a drumkit, and a few times a night when I'm playing a basic beat, the sounds will start playing a second later. I've used 2 other spd-sx pads in the past and neither ever did this. I'm wondering if it's something with the firmware 1.08? My prior 2 pads were 1.05, and I doubt there's a way for me to backdate the new one back to 1.05?

Not so simple a fix really as some types of samples aren't practical for mono setting like drum sounds that are meant to sustain beyond the next hit. Hi hats in mono don't sound great
Hey Tim - thanks for this video :) Have you ever had the issue where you get a formatting issue on startup? When you try to format it, it says there is an error formatting and this error continues when you turn off and on again.... I have tried plugging in my computer and also a USB however this formatting error still shows. I can't reset the pad meaning it's 100% useless at the moment. the pad :(
Hey Matthew. That sounds like a really frustrating situation. I've never experienced it, but at first glance, it sounds like the internal memory on your unit might be defective or have become corrupted. I would reach out to Roland's service department and start a ticket to try and get it fixed. I've sent a few things back before to have them repair them.

For people that don't want to fool with iTunes, Audacity is a free program that can also do this conversion.

@@TimBuell Not easily, no. You can write a python script to batch process samples, but that's beyond my knowledge level.

I would check to be sure your pads aren't "panned" to left or right. As well, try using a different cable/set of headphones. Sometimes the headphone cable gives out and leaves you with only one side.
