- Pokemon Live! was a multi-million dollar musical stage show featuring the adventures of Ash, Brock, Misty, Pikachu, Giovanni, Team Rocket and the mechanical Pokemon, MechaMew2. It premiered on Broadway at Radio City Music Hall in September of 2000 and then toured the United States and Canada. I was the Production Stage Manager on the show. The show was directed by Luis Perez of Broadway renown.

my favorite thing about this is that andrew said he once sat on a speaker and cried while doing pokémon live because he was so miserable and i think that's just. wonderful

so if thats the case why is ashs mom so involved and why is there a connection between her and giovanni?..smdh ...like thats just fan fic...also so is his mom not wanting him to do this..thats opposite of her character...she welcomes it even if she is reserved about it she knows it cant be helped so she supports him and doesnt show the sadness she feels and she thus compensates for it by pretending she doesnt care as much about worrying for...that subtext I guess was lost

Hi, the Pokémon were chosen based on popularity. That is what we were told. It was not difficult for the dancers to work with two Pokémon each because we worked with that idea since day one in rehearsal. The flying Pokémon were VERY light. I wore several of them to see how they were going to be for the dancers and they were very easy because they were so light. The puppeteer that made them had worked on the Broadway production of THE LION KING and really knew how to make things light.
Oh man bummer that those puppets were just thrown away. I honestly just want to watch the show to see the puppets, the show may not have ended on a high note, but damn those stage props were banging.

I just want the MewTwo. I would legit attempt to overcome my fear of being unable to breathe to try to wear that as a suit to a convention. I’m a furry who can’t wear suits, I love Pokémon and my favorite is MewTwo… lol 😂 Alternatively, I could have had my furry BFF wear it for me while I cosplayed as Amber/Green, my favorite would-be trainer and MewTwo’s rightful first best friend forever.
I saw Dee Roscioli (Delia) as Elphaba in 'Wicked' last year and she was amazing. In 2008, I also saw Andrew Rannels as Bon Guadio in 'Jersey Boys' and his performance was the one that I remembered the most from that night.

I love how 4kids made a Behind the Scenes of POKEMON Live, but they didn't even bother to publish the POKEMON Live performance on VHS/DVD. You'd think it'd be easier for them just to put POKEMON Live on VHS and sell it.
They didn’t want to obviously as they were embarrassed by this apparently but they did it because of the success the show had

Hi Chris, Thank you for uploading this video, i am Yvette Helin the one who was puppet and costume designer on this show. I was reviewing my old photos and realized Andrew Rennels was Jesse - I subconsciously knew he was familiar to me but could not place it until I saw a fitting pic of team rocket. He is doing so well! I just made some things for Book of Mormon and saw that he opened the show on Broadway for that as well. A lot of that video was shot in my studio. My copy is surely dust by now
Were any of the costumes or puppets saved?

I went to see this as a kid and I loved it!
I really wish there was a better quality version of the show to watch online instead of the version where the camera is so far zoomed out. At least the audio was really good.
Pokemon Live seriously needs to come back, hopefully to DVD. I would buy it in an instant and watch it over and over again.

Awww man! I was only 3 back then! Why did everything great and awestacular happen before I could remember it. I wish I was the age I am now back then and woulda been there. (Watched it online my fav part was Giovanni's 1st song and "Delia? imaging you and I together again!" Giovanni's the greatest!)
So, watch this entire video. It's pretty cool -- Andrew is part of a Two-some called Jessie and James and it's pretty clear that they steal the show. Plus, he has the most hilarious/ridiculous purple wig. His comedic brilliance is obvious here.

That's true. I agree with you 100%. I do, however, have to say that in actuality, as far as mega-children's musicals go, POKEMON LIVE! was one of the very best. The director was a veteran Broadway choreographer and the set, lighting, sound and costume designers were all Broadway talent. The script writer was a very accomplished children's musical writer and all of the producers had years of experience under their belts. This show was produced and directed by the best Broadway had to offer.
Oh sorry! I just was laughing at how Andrew Rannells was James in this production!

Andrew Rannels, Darren Dunstan, and Dee Roscioli sure went on to great things after this.
But all things considered, this is a fun start for them (if this was the start for some of them).
Even if the show wasn't a profit-driver big enough to give birth to another show, there's still another option. Maybe you could talk to some of the production staff to set up a Pokemon Live Reunion. It would be a cool idea, and now that many of the cast members have flourishing Broadway careers, it can be a fun thing for the cast to look back on. Maybe for part of time they could reprise their roles for the sake of the people who did and didn't grow up with the show. Have somebody tape this thing, and you've got something for old Pokemon fans to look forward to. After all, August 2015 will be the show's 15th anniversary since its premiere. What do you think?

@@ghostjutsu I would think so, because imagine the money they could make by releasing this in HQ on DVD/Blueray nowadays, instead of the 360p vers we've been miraculously given. Not complaining but I didn't know until this that Mewtwo's fingertips glowed.
Because critics shat on it unlike the series and games which are hugely popular among fans and critics. This was still pretty successful though I think
I wanted to see this show so badly. 12 years later, I STILL wanna see it. I just wish it had lasted so much longer.

European tour we were all new cast from London, except Susan Wogish who was a dancer in the US version, she was our dance captain on Europe tour, in US we had a few of the UK cast not able to do the show so we had basically new dancers from US and were joined by Dee Roscioli from the original US Cast reprising her role as Mrs. Ketchum. Playing Brock for me was an amazing experience and I had so much fun.

Well not exactly, look at how many old movie props survive today, like the original Yoda puppet from Star Wars for example, they most probably didn't think it was worth keeping them, but these do look great for their time

Ash They would definitely need to be restored, and not everything can withstand time. Many of the Disney walk-arounds were rotting away so they just got destroyed.

I'm fairly sure saying Pokemon has the #1 video game, cartoon, and movie ever made is a bit of a stretch, but this show was really fun to see as a kid, and I'm so glad I found it again. Thank you for uploading this as well as the show.
