Your total explained was : $949(laptop with $150 discount) + $150(emailed later)+ $62.87(tax)= $1161.87. It seemed you were still being charged the $150 but you would’ve gotten it back as an email gift card within 24 hrs.
The $150 charge is to make sure if people do end up return the laptop, they can only get the $949 back instead of full price because that would’ve included a gift card. They also want you to use that gift card at a separate transaction and buy more apple products. But I agree with you, I would want the discount at the moment of buying it, not later. Either way you got a god deal at Best Buy.

congratulation on u new Mac , have MacBook Pro m1 16 inch and is amazing , only thing check the computer really well sometimes best b sold products use and is listing like new , happens to me twice with AirPods and tv .. check the products for little scratches and the screws on the Botton
