Just seeing this video now, 6 years after it was posted. I’ve watched a lot of blades made from various UA-camr’s and to say this blade is the most beautiful blade I’ve ever seen is a wild understatement. Very well done!!!

WOW!!!!!!!!!! Mike you make REALLY BEAUTIFUL BLADES SIR. Beauty and function, that's what a proper tool should be....in my opinion. Very well done sir.
Absolutely beautiful pattern, Dmitry. Those not "in the know" may not recognise the "play button" triangles in the pattern, but those of us who do know can't help but see all of them. Great job.
anybody that watched the video in its entirety saw the process of him shrinking the play button with each forge. There's no need to be "in the know" here as it's pretty obvious what the pattern is.
@@ThePrufessa true, but anyone seeing the blade that didn't see the video woukd not be "in the know". Also, those who start a video and skip to the end to see the final product may not be "in the know". Just saying.

The designs on the blade on this one was beautiful and if nothing more than a product of the process, not etching post completion, I would say it's the best looking blade I have seen.

This is my favorite blade that you have made. Honestly, they are all masterpieces. One thing is for sure. You make sure your metal is hot enough to set your forge welds. Exceptional processes to make sure they are set without a doubt.
What liquid are you soaking the billet in before you start the first heat? And why? I'm not questioning your method, I want to learn and you seem to always get perfect welds, thanks.
The billet is soaked in kerosene. This is necessary for good welding (forging) steel. When burning inside the workpiece remains soot (carbon), which, with further heating, scales and rust inside the workpiece restores to the iron, improving the quality of forging welding.
I think it's kerosene. It is to prevent rust and when kerosene is evaporated away, some sort of residue helps it out with the forge weld. I have heard of other people using something similar, like WD-40 to do "no-flux" welds.
Dmitry, What is it you use for flux. I am sure you get this question a lot but I hope you will tell us one more time. If you will include the mix ratios. Thanks Nastrovia, Martin M&S Blades
I sprinkle flux (90% borax + 5% quartz sand + 5% charcoal powder) this is necessary for forging (forge) welding. The flux is alloyed with scale - the formed substance is sufficiently fluid and is easily displaced by deformation. In addition, the flux protects against oxygen and charcoal, carburizes the surface layer of metal - which lowers the welding temperature (if in brief).
