- A lot of people ask me, "Dr. Cellini, aren't vets smarter than human doctors?". Well, this video seeks to answer that question. I have been trying to make this video with the great @DrCellini for quite some time and over the holiday I finally had some time to sit down, use his equipment and studio for my own gain, and see how his level of medical knowledge helps out with the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam. The results will......surprise you (they surprised me).

I'm always so impressed with vets and think it would be a much harder job. Physicians need to learn one species' anatomy. Vets need to learn countless. Humans can tell their doctor what's bothering them. Vets have to deduce what the issue is. Physicians also don't have to worry about being bit--most of the time, anyway.
Exactly 😅 plus there are so few vet schools compared to med schools
100%! I just said the same thing before I saw this. Human doctors have to learn the anatomy of one species. Vets, multiple species with pretty substantial variation between subspecies. Most vets are surgeons, oral surgeons/dentists, radiologists, orthopedist/orthopedic surgeons, pediatricians, geriatrician, infectious disease specialist, pathologists, endocrinologists, reproductive endocrinologist, OBGYNs, proctologists, urologists, cardiologists, gastroenterologists, palliative care/euthanasia... That's your average small practice vet at any decent animal hospital.
Don't get me started on Veterinary technicians vs nurses. It's not even a contest depending on your state, they're also nurses, anesthesia techs, surgical techs, dentists, dental hygienists, radiology techs, phlebotomists, lab techs, pharmacists, medical assistant, etc.. i mean have you ever tried to place a catheter on a severely dehydrated 17 year old cat? Tried to collect a blood sample from the jugular of a 105lb German Shepherd that doesn't consent to treatment? How about from the jugular of a pissed off cat that hasn't had a nail trim in years?
Speaking from personal experience, those are the easy parts of the job. The much much harder things are the things you can't forget no matter how hard you try. Or the things you have to do.. Add to that the scars from all the bites/scratches, the constant pee/poop/anal glanding on everything. Then, to top it all off you make minimum wage, or slightly more ($0.50 more)... The clients... Noncompliance... The reality that unless you apply for a CareCredit card, there is no "send me the bill'. It's pay now or fluffy dies.
Many animal hospitals, in my experience, are extremely manipulative towards their staff because they know that they're all here because they love animals and will use that to get you to go above and beyond. Sign this paper agreeing to no breaks, no lunches "due to the nature of our job". 12 hour days are standard.
It's not just vets who have an extremely high suicide and burn-out rate by the way. We hear about vets a lot now and I'm glad but at the same time.... Anyway...
lmaoooo "I dont remember what my score was, but I've been allowed to practice veterinary medicine, so I'm assuming I passed it." - Dr. Cellini
Lol
I took my dog to the vet, I was unwell he asked what’s up. He told me to check my b12 levels as I had abnormal gait and was breathless and looked anaemic. He was correct ! Pernicious anaemia. Why isn’t my GP this good!
wow
My boss knew somebody that was a DVM and a human GP, and saw patients of all species out of the same practice!
Pernicious 😨 dude..you ok?
@@alliem8700
That seems unlikely.
@@RealGalaxyGamers Which is why it's so cool! I can't remember if it was in India or the US, but my boss has been a vet for 30 years, and practiced in both countries and multiple states, so he knows a ton of vets.
I seem to have missed my calling. I went 6/6 and I'm a meteorologist. I do binge vet shows like crazy, though. Thank you Dr. Oakley, Dr. Pol, Bondi Vet, the Critter Fixers, many more I can't remember at this moment, and all the fine vets on all the SPCA shows from around the world for ensuring I could answer 6 questions correctly on a random YT video.
As a veterinary undergrad, this made me feel at ease with applying and taking the NAVLE. thank you
4th year vet student here--this video was so much fun to watch! We need more of these DVM/MD crossovers! Thanks for a great video! :)
I think Dr. Cellini is a DO
The main difference in human med exam vs vet med exam: humans need to know one species. Vets need to know feline, canine, horse, rodents, birds, farm, wild- even if they are never going to specialize in some.
Vet tech listening to him say “oh well there’s a bunch of crap in it” “oh she pregnant” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This was fun to watch. One of my professors in tech school had a mug saying “real doctors treat more than one species” haha
To be fair though so many vets just do dogs and cats and refuse smaller animals and larger animals. Like I get it's the bread and butter (And large animal is a LOT more work on call days ect) but 2 species doesn't really feel like that much better
@@NoThankUBeQuiet im large animal vet, im lacking experience in small animals. Vets gotta be specialist in at least some species(even systems) in order to show good results
Your dry humor is cracking me up. Enjoyed the video, and would definitely love more crossover content!
Deal!
5/6! We learned a lot in vet tech school.
Man I wish my NAVLE had those questions 😂 I took it in December, it was infinitely harder and more ambiguous than any of those sample questions...
As someone who is not certified to practice any sort of medicine, I'm proud to say that I correctly diagnosed the X-ray of the dog with the distended abdomen.
Dr. James is so funny and Mike just lets all the jokes go flat 😭☠️
Not sure he gets it....:)
@@DVMCellini 😂😂
I’m not a vet-head, but I once operated a ranch, so I’m glad to learn about BVD and germ layers of CB.
And I’m always up for a video with test questions.
Currently a 3rd year vet student in France, I just found your channel and I litteraly just love its content! We need more of those videos :)
Awesome! Thank you! and welcome!
I loved this! Spent my entire childhood and adolescence wanting to go into vet med but am now on track for physicians assisting. Still big into dogs so this was a fun mix of interests to watch.
Quite reassuring to know that I got all of these right. Steve, MRCVS!
You threw Michael a couple of soft bones with the Giardia and X-Ray questions. Secretly you didn’t want him to fail 😅
perhaps. although i would love an episode where he gets 0 lol
I love this video! It provides such a unique professional perspective (plus the sibling rivalry aspect haha)- would love to see more videos like this in the future!
Thank you for watching! Yeah definitely gonna try more to make content together going forward.
Loving this and your channel! 30+ years in human medicine and wishing I had gone the veterinary path instead.
There......are downsides.
@@DVMCellini I am with Grey, I regret doing human healthcare, and if vet tech jobs paid more I would leave human medicine in a heartbeat!
that's a big "if" betty!
@@DVMCellini word up
The pay is why I didn't go to vet school. Graduate with the student loans of an MD, have to treat hundreds of species, and yet no one pays their vet bills. I made more in specialty pet retail management than vet techs in our attached clinic did.
MORE BROTHER VIDEOS... YOU ARE BOTH GREAT... LOVE YOUR VIDEOS... KEEP THEM COMMING... LOVE BOTH YOUR SENCE OF HUMOUR... GREAT JOB
Thank you! Will do!
Sitting for my veterinary board exam next week all the way here in Namibia and I feel so much better knowing I could answer all of these😅
That’s awesome. Good luck!
I have a feeling that this video will go viral and be a huge hit 😻
I m eager for the other version of you taking usmle
I hope you’re correct 😂
I'm a vet and a human doctor... would love to see you do USMLE questions (you'll be fine, btw, basic monogastric physiology and pathology is the pretty much the same between humans and non-humans - how well you do will depend on whether you can dredge the Krebs cycle back out of your subconscious from vet school, but I managed after 10 years so you probably can too).
You are both? That’s amazing! How does that even happen? So you went to school for 8 years and became one professional and then went back to school for 4 years to switch professions?
How a vet and human doctor?
I went to school for one, qualified, worked for a while, then went back to school for the other one, qualified and kept working.
Loved the video! Kind of cool how some questions in veterinary medicine can be answered if you know human medicine. It’s like a cross over episode lol
Absolutely. I've gotten some USMLE questions right too back when he showed me.
Literally stumbled on your page today and it was fun to watch the friendly duel! I am currently preparing for my BSCE exam which is a pre- NAVLE exam that international vet doctors have to take before sitting for the NAVLE. I am definitely subscribing to your channel!
Awww thank you! I’ll be making a video about the BSCE and international vets coming to the US soon. Welcome in!
The Veterinarian lived across the hall from me at one of my duty stations. When I wouldn't get help at the Army clinic, I would knock on his door. As long as I swore on my mother's grave that he had absolute confidentiality, he saved my life more than once.
Discovered your channel through your brother. I absolutely LOVE the vids with the two of you. Love the camaraderie and sibling rivalry, haha! More videos with the two of you, please!
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching and yeah we're gonna try for more family content in the future as much as possible.
I took this exam 20 years ago and passed it the first time. I'm not so sure I could pass it at this moment though, without prior studying...too many non dog/cat questions!
I´m from mexico, and passed the equivalent there without studying, but I already failed my first NAVLE, after studying for months.
As a practicing doctor of veterinary medicine for 40 years mostly in rural mixed animal practice, i cringed on some of these questions then realized....i know this! Havent taken an examination since the KY State Boards back in the days when each state had its own basic sciences/veterinary medicine tests...usually a 2 day ordeal. I took TN a couple of weeks after graduating and then KY a year later. Just a few years ago i was going to be in WVA covering for a maternity leave for 2 months. The state board was an on line short exam on particular laws pertaining to veterinary medicine in the state....soooo much better!
I still think we need universal licensure where 1 license allows you to practice in any state, with states providing a .pdf or booklet of laws pecuilar to that state. Of course, we've asked for that for 60 years.
Maybe things like this video might convince a lot of the self smug M.D.'s ive come across over the decades who said and acted like veterinarians were vastly inferior to human medical practitioners. Always irritated me that MD's are basically one species specialists, leaving the DVM to cover the other 50K species.
Very nice challenge for the opposite specialty.... Man vs Beast :)
i mean the kid did pretty good
Vet pathologist (anatomic) with a human doc SO, here - this vid was right up our alley. Can't wait to see how you (and those of us playing along at home ;) ) do on the USMLE. =)
Please turn the tables, wanna see u vet take a physician board exam, too! Haha! Currently a DVM student from PH. Love your vids!
I found this fascinating. Looking forward to more.
I've been a Licensed Vet Nurse/Tech for 22 years. Got a 5/6- missed the BVD question.. which would hurt the feelings of my two mentors(boarded AABP members). I know I get almost as many questions from family and friends as to what could be wrong with them in addition to what might be wrong with their pets!
Just found your channel. Loved this. I took the NAVLE over 20 years ago (was actually the first class to take it after they got rid of the old tests). Small animal GP, but I still managed to get the large animal questions correct ,which was a bit surprising. (although I had to extrapolate the BVD one from cats). I think you should have made him do a puppy count on the last one. And I'm seriously tempted to start telling my clients their pets have Beaver Fever (we see a ton of Giardia). 🙃
Welcome! I think my first merch item is gonna be a “beaver fever” tshirt
Yeah I took boards long ago and can’t even remember what our test was called!
Third year vet student and I can’t wait to tell my classmates about this golden nugget of new new knowledge 😂
@@DVMCellini ummm as a female if I didn't know the context and saw that in public I'd be super creeped out....
I'm a medical student, and I chose all the same answers. Except for number 5, I picked syringomyelia since that can be caused by post-traumatic or infectious adhesions. Still, got the same score though.
Wow. I'm a 5th year vet student and I'm surprised at how easy (or should I change that word for BASIC) the questions are. Not that I want to sound smart or anything but since I read online a lot of people having to study on their own and also people failing it I was expecting it to be a lot tougher and with more clinical questions, for example the video on the USMLE on MD cellini's channel gave me the impression that their exam was actually harder IMO.
BTW great video!
Honestly I get the impression the USMLE is orders of magnitude more difficult.
@@DVMCellini I agree.
I showed my dog the video she said, “woof.” I think she likes it.
Rewatching some Dr. Cellini videos and love to see ones where they interact since they are great together. Realized I can’t find the video of DVM Cellini taking interventional or diagnostic radiology board questions though. I can’t remember if I saw it before or if they never uploaded it but it would be fun to watch.
I never did it! I would love to though
AQ! The good thing that you studied vet school, and then take the exam. Great news, if you passed!)
These are fun (and educational) videos!
we had fun making it and i think it shows
@@DVMCellini It definitely shows! Not bad for a “grasshopper “, right? 😉.
I diagnosed that puppy w giardiasis too :) good to know I'm learning something in med school 😄
Me after getting more questions right than Dr.Cellini:
Maybe I am a Doctor/Vet 🤔
Love this!!! Can't wait to see the flip side!!!
I don't think DVMs are necessarily smarter than MDs, but they do have to learn about several species while MDs only need to learn about one. My dad was a veterinarian btw
DVM here, would be hard pressed after over two decades to respond to any of the large animal questions!!
Lol at “didn’t get the joke”
Guy's as dense as lead (rad joke).
Damn just loved it! Vet from India who passed her NAVLE! You guys be awesome!
Haha! Found this video in our Swedish veterinary group on FB.
Very funny idea and my favourite comment about the "who's best" topic :
Human doctors are veterinary specialists for great apes
haha thanks and welcome in! what's the facebook group?
This got on my home page likely because I am also a DVM (clinical pathology specialty) and this was both entertaining and validating! I also got a 4 out of 5 and my NAVLE was in 1997! :D The more you specialise, the more difficult the general questions become.
Oh absolutely. The non dog/cat stuff especially for me.
@@DVMCellini Yep! My math did not get better with time though... I meant to say 5 out of six! Now back to my MCT staging LN sample ;)
11:28 "...oh wait, there's something crap in it..."🤣

You two guys are fabulous! You should be on here regularly!
Love my vet and my Dr. You two. Could not deny your related 😁♥️👍
I have been working as a general practitioner and I FORGOT a lot of stuff about large animals, but I at least got the answer right. The minute I saw the questions, I answered them right away but with a lot of doubts!! haha :) liked, subscribed, and commented. haha :)
Thanks doc!
loved it , great job Micheal!! thinking like a scientist always works. Good work. I cant wait to try and answer the MD questions. Chrisfish DVM

This was fun to watch
thanks for watching it!
The only reason I remembered the cerebellar hypoplasia one was because the cause of it in cats is viral as well haha
I liked this fun game time segment. Great video, keep going!
Vet brother had to explain the questions so that’s kind of cheating 🤣🤣
This was a fun video!
next one i'm giving him 0 help whatsoever.
I have been in animal husbandry and care for over a decade so I knew 4 of these as well. Looks like I'm headed to Jersey to be a vet 😎
I didn’t guess hydrocephalus for number 5, because I have it. For the cow question I would have said dairy cow. Moo cow 🐄 made me LOL! 😂
i should have made fun of him in real time. missed opportunity.
very interesting. The USMLEs are brutal because the question style is not testing first degree knowledge. Often a question will expect you to know the first degree knowledge (like the giardia one), the treatment (i.e. metronidazole) but ask what is the most common side effect of that treatment (third degree knowledge).
Yeah my suspicion is that its way way harder but we'll see when I take some questions.
I just started Vet Tech school to go onto Vet school So I wanted to test myself and got the same score as him😂 glad to know I am knowledgeable enough for this career path
11:30 “there’s a whole bunch of crap in it” ahahaha the technical description
Great Video, Doc!
A fellow vet! Thanks for saying that.
Definitely feel the low-key competitive sibling energy 😂
I did 4/6 here even so I don't have a Biology Associates yet due to failing Organic Chemistry I/II... Ugh, if I can pass those, I'm probably going to be able to head up... But awesome to watch, definitely a dream despite the money challenges...
best of luck with everything. just keep grinding.
Thank you 👍
you're welcome!
Liked it !! Please present more like this!!
Thankfully I haven’t seen a rawr cow yet
Pffffff 😂
This was great. I missed the cerebellar hypoplasia answer and I’m a vet. 😬. Thanks for the great explanation.
All good! Let me know if you need help with any neuro cases (small animal).
The calf’s signs actually depend upon the pregnancy stage at which the cow was infected. BVD can cause normal looking carrier calves as well. An insidious disease as it’s easily missed in herds, thus easily perpetuates causing economic hardship.
Great video!👍
Thank you!
I loved this! You two are awesome 🙂
That last one? Really? Probably most bums off the street would have gotten that! Looking forward to you taking the human med test!
I showed it to a homeless person a few blocks from me and they were not able to produce a radiographic diagnosis.
Large animal vets are the best. So much work and danger and yet they show up all the time and help us out with these massive bratty creatures.
Also maybe I should have went to vet school. I did pretty good aside from second guessing myself. But there was a lot of good reasons I didn't. So much love for my current vets. Have had a couple bad experiences with other vet but found my teams and I love them.
This is great content!
thanks billygoat!
it's been a hot minute since i've done non dog/cat vet medicine and im so happy i still remember the random cow things. granted its easier when there's multiple choice versus pull it out of your brain.
I'm happy because I was able to pass the exam at first sitting thou it wasn't easy 😂😂
I got 4 out of 6 right from a Bachelor of Biology degree that I barely graduated from (and subsequently would not be admitted to Vet school for) and watching Dr. Pol. I don't know whether to feel good or extremely sad about that...
Got a 3/6, LOL! Never formally studied medicine (though I wanted to become a medical doctor) or gone to vet school. The last one got me because I forgot that dogs usually carry more than one baby. Hahahaha! Remembering that certainly would've helped. Love tests! Fun.
Lol. I was like underweight and malnourished. Sounds pregnant.
He got half.
I’ve definitely limited use of metronidazole in my Gia puppies. I’ve also never used metro alone in 5 years of practice, if I use it it’s always in conjunction with panacur.
that's interesting. also the BVD question was wrong they definitely can get hydranencephaly. go navle.
@@DVMCellini oh! Thats the one I had picked.
I did pretty well, and I'm a nurse, but would rather work with animals. I got Giardia (I used to be a lab tech), but didn't know the med. Will follow up with some reading tonight.
I’m an LVT in NY. I got 6/6. Admittedly I guessed the BVD one. I knew it messed up the calves I just didn’t know how.
CVT in pa also got 6/6!
Bust out the actual nalve questions. Those made me cry.
send 'em to me
Great content! ...Though now I desperately need to see the vet brother ace the human medicine board exam 😄 You know... not that vets were smarter or anything 😁
As a brother, Jim reminds me of the quintessential example of a know-it-all brother.
I mean yeah. I do know it all (compared to him).
@DVMCellini I’m currently in my first year vet school and loved trying to answer the questions along with other Dr.Cellini! I was curious is what resource you used to get the NAVLE practice questions??
Love both of your channels and videos like this since I have a lot of friends in medical school too it’s fun to see the differences and similarities in human and vetmed!
