  • The fort of Mamucium sits in the heart of Manchester at Castlefields and is free to view although a daylight visit is recommended. The fort was founded around AD79 and had 3 rebuilds during its operation with the fort being abandoned towards the end of Roman Britain in the 5th Century. Trains stop at Oxford Street or Deansgate otherwise it’s a 15 minute walk from the central shopping area. #archaeology #history

Awsome . Have you made a vid about Doncaster Roman fort (Danum)? There's part walls at the rear of the old Arndale center. The fort was on the river Don which in turn the old north and south Roman road runs. Just south of here there was a battle between Romans and Saxon at a fort nr Bawtry on the river Idle. I've found so much history around Bawtry from my hobby , metal detecting .

There was no evidence of any granneries on the western defences! I should know, I was the field officer that ran the excavations there in the 1980s....
