    When I was a kid, my father used to tell me how proud his father (my grandfather) was when he joined the Tata group. When I was in college, my father (who had switched to a career in the Indian Air Force by then, after a successful career at Tata) urged me strongly to join Tata. By that time, economic development had begun in full force in India and I was fortunate to have got a job in another company. Still, 20 years later, and seeing the continued rise of Tata and its expansion well beyond the shores of India, it gives me immense pride that at least a part of me was associated with this iconic company that defined my India. :)

      Wrong. If that was so they would have stopped Tata from building a chain of buisnesses in the first place. Tata saw more growth in the British Raj than Post independent India's Socialist era between 1952 to 1991. Apart from Tata a lot of Indian companies came into existence and saw growth like the Godrej Group, Bajaj group, Dabur India, TVS group, Kirloskar group, Banking sector and a lot of Textile Mills owned and operated by Indian buisnesses came up. But Nehruvian Socialism inspired from USSR slowed these companies growth because of Anti Buisness Policies of the Socialist Govt of India. Demonizing the British everytime was just a pretext and justification to let Indian Leaders takeover India to Rule.
      Hong Kong was given independence on 1997. See what Hong Kong changed into.

    1:18 "The raj didn't exploit the Indian population quite as harshly" millions who died in Bengal and other parts would disagree.I'm sorry i dont know where you got that info but its absolutely wrong .There were plenty of man-made famines which were direct result of British policies not to mention massacres like Jalianwalla bagh and the treatment of ordinary Indians.They were no better than East Indian Company ofcourse there were good people in the Raj but they were miniscule and often outweighed by bad ones.
    British didnt invest shit, Indian taxpayers paid for the entire construction for the Indian railways, but the profits were entirely made by the English .It was private profit at public risk.Not to mention that Indian railway was built at a cost 4x of other railways. They built it to exploit the resources that india had and for greater access of market for British goods.

    • @MostlyPonies1

    • @himanshusingh5214
      @himanshusingh5214 5 років тому +39

      @@MostlyPonies1 Britishers didn't change the society much. Most of India was still backward when they left plus they caused poverty by forcing farmers to grow crops like cotton, Indigo, opium to support their Industrial revolution and sell opium to China. They supported the Zamindari system in UP, Bihar, WB and central India which caused huge inequalities and further caste and class division. These crops also caused famines due to a decline in soil quality and they stored the wheat and rice grown in India for their war as reserves while millions here died.
      No country helps another country to develop risking its people's lives when it itself is developing.
      They were here to exploit our vast fertile lands and labor. Do you really think Britain took so much pain of ruling India to develop it? They have to kill many uprising with the help of local traitors yet they were so keen on ruling India. Can you answer why didn't they just left India when their own country needed their resources?
      Also, why were the Indian markets open to British goods only and not any other country? The biggest reason USA supported Indian independence was to exploit Indian markets which were closed by Britishers to any other country. They discouraged farmers to make clothes in UP, Bihar, and WB and dumped their own products here while we couldn't do anything as the policies were made by them. If similar things happen and a local ruler is present, he slaps tariffs to support local Industries but Britishers did the opposite. Were they really here to develop India? And they never admit they did wrong either they say that they are proud of their ancestors or they say that everybody did that, so case solved.

Ratan tatas net worth was supposed to be 140 Billion USD if he didn't donate. But his net worth is just over a billion USD. No wonder he is one of the most respected person in India people salute him.

    As an ex Tata employee, it's heartwarming to see them getting the recognition they deserve.
    I only want to present some counter points to the historical narrative as presented, hopefully to show a complete picture. The British Raj did as much damage to the Indian society as the Company, further deepening communal divisions in the society, the effects of which are still felt today. All the so called development projects were more by the British for the British than the Indians, but at the cost of Indian taxpayers. There's a great talk by Dr. Shashi Tharoor in an Oxford Union debate highlighting the damages of the colonial period.
    The socialist era is another interesting point. It's true that while there was friction between the Tatas and the government, within this framework the Tatas could nevertheless set up major infrastructure projects in the country. The socialist system, while on one hand kept the free market benefits from germinating in India, also helped to protect Indian economy from dominant global wealthy nations which could easily dominate and further suppress the already fragile local industries. While things didn't turn out as well as they planned, nevertheless India could at least become a successful sovereign state at the end of the socialist era, ready to bear the pressures from international competition opened up by liberalization in the 90s.
    But, for sure, Tatas have survived all the changing tides and are continuing to contribute in nation building. Surely one the jewels of modern India.
