Highway Star, to me, doesn't get as much love as it should. It is one of the best car songs. Of course, the best part is Ritchie and Jon competing with each other, racing down the highway and changing gears on every turn. Damn, I love this song.
I have pre-ordered my copy. I've been a Purplehead since I received "Fireball" in 1970 for my 16th birthday. Nothing they do goes unnoticed by me, even though I'm almost 70. Great Review !!
I saw a video of Roger Glover talking about this 50th edition. In the booklet, there is picture of Roger and Ian Gillan and he said that is where they are writing the lyrics for Smoke on the Water. It almost brought tears to my eyes. When I played guitar and sang in a band in the 1970's, the crowd always loved this song and they would bug us to play it (which we did!)
I have a picture disc of Machine Head . Came with a poster of Blackmore unfortunately I no longer have the poster, bought it at the record store I worked at in the 80's. This set looks awesome!

So awesome! Appropriate you’re wearing AC/DC for Deep Purple. One of the greatest albums of all time. As Ian says at the end of smoke, break a leg Frank. It doesn’t get any better for a remix. Hearing new sounds in songs you know by heart. And I thank you.
The Dweezil remix sounds so clear and focused. I’ve listened to Machine Head countless times over the years and this release will add to that. Brilliant.
There's a modicum of poetic justice to the idea that Dweezil would be the one who remastered this record. His father's misadventures in Montrose were a part of what inspired the writing of "Smoke on the Water".
I wish they'd done a super extra mega deluxe version of "Perfect strangers" instead since it should be it's 40th anniversary in 2024. "Machine Head" has had several treatments like this over the years and I personally think it's time to lift the eyes to other Deep Purple albums especially the 80s and 90s stuff that seem almost forgotten these days...
Thanks for showing us each pages from the booklet. I'm a Tidal listener and they offer this edition in their playlist, but it is mentioned that "the record company does not authorize the playback of these titles." I hope, in some time, the house will authorize it. Let's think this way! Machine Head is for me one of the best rock records of all time with Led Zep: 2, 4, PG; ACDC: Back a black; Van Halen: 1; Pink Floyd: DSOTM, WYWH, Animals; and a few other records. Please do detailed SOUND reviews where the recording of each instrument/voice is analyzed carefully.
Great review as always, love this album and the band were on fire during this time, nearly quite literally, the live 72 stuff I've had for a while now on double album, its very meaty and raw, I love to hear what the've done with the 5.1 and Atmos mixes, love the use of the words bollocks and organ in the same sentence really gets the point across, think I must part with my money for this piece of rock history.
I’ve only heard the new mix of Smoke On The Water, and have to say, I really like it. I hope Dweezle Zappa can work on some more Purple albums. In Rock, Burn, Fireball, and Strombringer could all do with a little face lift. Really excited to hear the rest of this mix.
Nice one. After watching your review. I dug out my Deep Purple Machine Head [1997 Remix] CD. Loaded it onto my iPod and and turned up the volume on the headphones. Great Stuff.
I love that album! The best one they ever did. Still, I do not want new re-mixes of classic rockmusic. I want to hear the music as it sounded historically.
It'll be interesting to see what Dweez does with the mix. I think the last one I bought was the one you mentioned with the extra disc with the b-sides and "Glover Mixes", that specifically said in the liner notes, that THIS will be the last time they do another remix/remaster. 😅
I wonder which solos they used for 'Highway Star' and 'Lazy'. Many years ago I was surprised when I heard the different versions between the SQ mix and the later releases.

Hi Barry. This was a really brilliant album looking back and this definitely looks like a quality product and of a very high quality. Enjoyed this one. All the best. Dave✅✅
You just wonder how much great music has been lost in past mixes. They really knew how to record back then - the oil crisis of the 70s caused really poor mixes because of very thin vinyl. Your enthusiastic review with your very calm voice speaks volumes! (Hey, that's a nice line😂)
oil crisis had no bearing at all. It was sheer record company cheepnis ( as Frank Zappa put it ) Remember RCA's "dynaflex" records ? Super thin and guaranteed to warp. They ruined the last few Guess Who records with that crap.
Agreed! It's mastered a bit loudly but it's not overcompressed and it kicks major ass. This new 2024 Dweezil remix, IMHO, is not very good nor is the new remaster. Too loud and overly compressed (in the remix you can hear the different instruments pumping and breathing...vying for supremacy in a mix where there is no room to breathe). If you want to hear the original mix in all it's modern digital glory, listen to the HDTracks files in 24 bit 96K resolution. Sorry to step on anyone's toes but, lately, there are too many people throwing their hats into the 'remixing classic albums' arena who aren't necessarily qualified for the job and they don't all do a particularly good job or do the material justice. But, again, that's my personal opinion. Your mileage may vary.

I remember a Free, Deep Purple tour of Australia in the early seventies. Deep Purple were the headliners, and it was post Fireball, from memory. I was down the front at Festival Hall here in Melbourne; Free were absolutely sensational. Then Deep Purple came on; a couple of songs in Gillan walked off stage after some altercation with Blackmore, who then spun his guitar around his head and (as I recall) that was the end of the show. In other words, they were bloody awful! 😂 I stopped listening to them soon after: too much “rock”, not enough “roll”for me, and my Rolling Stones obsession continued. However, I love your reviews and all power to Deep Purple fans everywhere!! (Jon Lord…still love him!!)
Oh yeah, man they had such a groove. Also, I very much never seen a bass player move like Andy Fraser…I think there was so much space and air in their music that you just HAD to move to it. Paul Rogers really moved on stage as well. Yes, Free: why is it that we don’t talk about them more?? I also much preferred them to Deep Purple (and the heavier ROCK bands), and I think in my case it was because I was 11 in ‘63, and that music with it’s rock and ROLL really dictated what my true love in music would always be. Totally agree with you about Simon Kirke…god he could play, not adding fills to every space that didn’t need filling!
@@liammccaul6587 Fraser and Roger’s had decided to end the band before the Tour of Australia and Japan in May ‘71 but had to commit to do the gigs. They just weren’t getting on anymore musically. They were on the verge of becoming massive but could not see it because Highway and The Stealer had not sold like Fire And Water and Alright Now had. A great shame. They tried to put it all back together in early ‘72 for Koss’ sake but it was too late as he was lost to addiction. Such a great shame as Free At Last and Heartbreaker do have great moments but Koss could not perform as he did on stage anymore as he was always tempted by the hangers on giving him something to intoxicate and incapacitate him rendering him unable to play well.
I prefer the Roger Glover remix (more clarity, more space), the Dweezil Zappa version feels a bit dense and overproduced to my taste... They (Roger Glover) should do a remix of Fireball and In Rock.🤘😎
Great review as always! Only thing I was waiting to hear was how the drums sound in the new mix? Quite often in new mixes the impact of the drums can get buried when other instruments are enhanced! Just curious 😊
Hi, Nice unboxing video, I not sure that I will jump of this. I do love this classic Album, since purchasing the original LP back in 72, over the decades I really have invested in the Album. I must have at least 6 different CD versions including all the past remasters and super deluxe editions, and the LP (Vinyl) again I have at I think 7 versions including Japanese releases, anniversary editions and remasters. So I am a little unsure if I really need this unless it appears in the bargin bin.
I have many versions too but I can tell from the remix of Smoke .. already out, that I will enjoy Dweezil’s work on this. However I liked the dry sound of the original .. quite modern sounding now as a lot of bands cut out overuse of reverb. Zeppelin’s albums can sound over produced to me now but I suppose that is part of what Pave brought to them.
@@seabud6408 Hi, yes I took the plunge and I have ordered the Box set, should have it next week sometime. I too am a massive Zeppelin fan. The remasters Jimmy put out a few years ago are good, But I must admit do go back the the original Pressing (Vinyl) and I think I prefer those ?
Thanks for the review. It’s been a “long haul” for long time DP fans over the 50 plus years since Mk.2 made their first studio album. I say “long haul” because some of the “rock cognoscenti” - at certain points during those decades - tended to “look down their noses” at DP. Aficionados never paid much heed to those snooty critics - nevertheless, it is gratifying now that the “golden period” of DP is more widely recognised as being “truly golden” - Tweezil Zappa is a son of Frank Zappa, as most of us know, and Frank Zappa’s reputation as a musical innovator was “right up there” so to have Tweezil do the re-mix of “Machine Head” does, I think, lay to rest, once and for all, the idea that DP were just “upstarts” not worthy of mention in the same breathe as Led Zeppelin or Cream !
I love the 2024 remix of smoke particularly the end section and everyone should definitely check out the new smoke video as well! Having said that, not sure I will be shelling out £89 for more versions of these songs however much I love them.
@@richardgrant418 Type in Deep Purple Smoke On The Water 2024 remix, and it should come up. They have done a rather cool animation video to go with it.
I have the 2018 limited edition purple vinyl edition which apparently fetches nearly 100 usd. And sounds phenomenal, especially when comparing to an OG press. I wonder if This 50th anniversary press sounds any better than mine. I just can’t imagine it sounding any better tbh
Big deep purple fan first saw them perform at Long Beach arena 1971 which is also available on remastered vinyl saw purple again 1972 at Anaheim convention center Santana was the opening act pre-order this 50th anniversary last week when I saw Ian paice on UA-cam promoting it by the way you didn't mention about the quality of the vinyl you mentioned in a earlier video that you don't have tt the record companies that give you the promotion vinyl should also give you a TT so you can inform your audience the quality of the vinyl before we purchase it
I hope this is available without the vinyl, because I haven't bought an LP since Michael Jackson's BAD back in the 80s, and I'm not about to start buying them again.
I have many versions of MH but I can tell from the remix of Smoke .. already out, that I will enjoy Dweezil’s work on this. (especially the surround mix) However I always liked the dry sound of the original .. quite modern sounding now as a lot of bands from the 80’s/90’s cut out overuse of reverb (Rick Rubin’s production on “Electric”.. by The Cult). Zeppelin’s albums can sound over produced to me now but I suppose that is part of what Page brought to them. Will be nice to see Purple and this monumental album getting some love again. The best live rock band .. ever IMO
Oooh, didn't see this one coming. And released on my birthday, to boot. I know what I'm gonna gift myself this year. Thanks for the announcement and review my man.
Whose bright idea was it to give Dweezil Zapper the keys to the kingdom? He’s made a complete bollocks of this, obviously faced with the paradox of choice which buttons to press on the mixing desk. Lots of detail lost in an orgy of echo and overdubbed noise. Yes we know it was recorded just an empty hotel, we just don’t need to hear it echoing down every corridor. This should have gone back to Martin Birch and Roger Glover to remix on modern equipment
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the DZ mix is disappointing. Everything drowned in reverb, weird panning and overdubs throughout. Totally spoiled it for me.
On the fence here. This is my favorite album by them and of course already have it and never said to myself " the mixing could have been better". I'm also not a fan of CDs. Maybe if this set had also included a live LP and a hard cover photo album would I buy. I just don't see a reason to purchase an lp I already have.
Pity there weren't tape recorders in the 18th Century then we could have all these money-spinning remasters, remixes, surround sounds and blurays of Bach and Beethoven, who Ritchie Blackmore was famously so influenced by.
Nothing will match buying the very first original release back in 1972 when I was in high school. Oh the thrill of it all.. when we first heard the opening lines to Smoke on the water for the first time. . I would not want to buy this and spoil my memory of the original. However, this looks very nice and expensive and what is the purpose of this then to only re-hash something that was done eons ago and will never be the same in my humble opinion. BUT, it's good to support the old masters.
A great set for the money, and sound quality is very important, but … Smoke on the Water on Made in Japan is far and away there KILLER for the performance. How good is the performance here?
Can you discuss the late Karl Wallinger please? Rest in peace, Karl. Karl Wallinger, surely one of Britain’s greatest musicians and songwriters, certainly up there with the best, but criminally underrated. Okay, that’s not everyone’s fault. Just five albums in 35 years (and of course, several stunning B-sides) hard to keep your name going, but he certainly could write a tune. I mean, number one with "She’s the One". Still, nobody seems to realise it was written by him. It would’ve been nice of Robbie to have mentioned him at the BRITs when he won best song. Back in the 90s, me and my girl Jane saw World Party play live on several occasions. They were “our band” and our favourite song together was Love Street from the Goodbye Jumbo masterpiece. That’s one of many moments since we spoke about when I first met Karl in February 2021. He was on holiday in Suffolk. I was doing a bit of work at a holiday village there and I looked up, and there was Karl with his family. His wife, Suzie and children, Louis and Nancy. I’d only just seen World Party a few months before at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. It was certainly one of the best gigs I had seen him play. When Karl and the kids were out playing golf, Suzie and I chatted about Karl’s work and the Shepherd’s Bush concert and many other things. She also told me that Carl had recorded his version of the complete White album, using exactly the same microphones as the Beatles did. It was funny when Karl found out I was a World Party fan he said we should have you taken out and stuffed! Later that weekend on that very same holiday Karl famously suffered a massive brain aneurysm. I only found out several weeks later. We know that he disappeared, into more even obscurity, and spent a few years recovering. Still making music, but none of us were able to listen to it. Fast forward a few years to 2012, and on November 2, my friend Nick and I walked round the back of the Royal Albert Hall, where World Party were playing their reunion spectacle in front of the packed house and cameras. Who is the first person we bumped into smoking a quick fag by the back door? Yes, it was Mr. Wallinger. We had a good chat with him. He offered me a fag. I presume he was trying to calm his nerves before going on stage to such a large audience. Then bizarrely, the comedian and talk-show host Clive Anderson turned up, and we were all standing around having a chat. Wished him luck and said our goodbyes. The last time I saw Karl perform was in Cambridge at the Junction, I think it was the following year. Possibly April 2013. His son Louis was selling merchandise. Another stellar performance by his dad and the rest of the band, of course. And that was it. And I fell back alone. What a beautiful soul. Taken away from us too soon, but when you’ve written a great song, it’s been written forever, it cannot be unwritten. Just like a film star, you are now immortal. You’ve left your legacy imprinted and recorded. Thoughts go out to his friends and family. You’ll be greatly missed. You are a legend. Stephen Dawson
I know what you mean, but technically it isn't paid promotion to send someone a 'review copy'.' This has always gone on, I'm sure writers at NME and Melody Maker got sent heaps of stuff to dedicate some of their time and print in their newspapers. By sending someone a 'review' copy you're asking them to do just that, rather than promote it. But of course a postive review does 'promote' an item - it is still considered different from 'product placement' .

While DP’s drumming wasn’t a feature like LZ’s it’s still a foundation of good hard rock

Nice box set. Wish they offered a all vinyl box set as I no longer listen or own cds anymore.
I agree, £89 is a stretch. I personally could do without the vinyl. Hopefully they’ll do separate sets at some point.
Puzzled - if you don’t have the box set how/ where were you able to hear any of the remix?
I’d want to hear a few myself before shelling out for this
@@richardgrant418 Type in Deep Purple Smoke On The Water 2024 remix, and it should come up. They have done a rather cool animation video to go with it.
The 2024 remix of smoke is on Spotify and the new video is on UA-cam.
@@richardgrant418 Type in Deep Purple Smoke On The Water 2024 remix, and you can have a listen. It has a rather cool animated video with it as well.
I have the 2018 limited edition purple vinyl edition which apparently fetches nearly 100 usd. And sounds phenomenal, especially when comparing to an OG press. I wonder if This 50th anniversary press sounds any better than mine. I just can’t imagine it sounding any better tbh
Big deep purple fan first saw them perform at Long Beach arena 1971 which is also available on remastered vinyl saw purple again 1972 at Anaheim convention center Santana was the opening act pre-order this 50th anniversary last week when I saw Ian paice on UA-cam promoting it by the way you didn't mention about the quality of the vinyl you mentioned in a earlier video that you don't have tt the record companies that give you the promotion vinyl should also give you a TT so you can inform your audience the quality of the vinyl before we purchase it
Their best album.
Second best after IN ROCK.

@GaryBook Please try THE BOOK OF TALIESYN
Hmmm. I think I already have this album.
I hope this is available without the vinyl, because I haven't bought an LP since Michael Jackson's BAD back in the 80s, and I'm not about
to start buying them again.
Excelente Video. Como consiguió una copia antes del lanzamiento el 29 de marzo???
Looks good, but £90!
It is dear
@@classicalbumDon't call me dear
I’d pay £190
Call me crazy, but shouldn’t the 50th anniversary of Machine Head have been released 2 years ago…..in its actual 50th anniversary year.
The music industry, well known for its precision in every respect.😅
I have many versions of MH but I can tell from the remix of Smoke .. already out, that I will enjoy Dweezil’s work on this. (especially the surround mix) However I always liked the dry sound of the original .. quite modern sounding now as a lot of bands from the 80’s/90’s cut out overuse of reverb (Rick Rubin’s production on “Electric”.. by The Cult). Zeppelin’s albums can sound over produced to me now but I suppose that is part of what Page brought to them. Will be nice to see Purple and this monumental album getting some love again. The best live rock band .. ever IMO
I do love the thin slipcase style box, however I have no use for cds or dvds anymore. I wish they'd offer a deluxe vinyl version of this.
It is 52 years old right? Two years late. Brings back memories because I saw them in 1972 Montreal Forum ,excellent concert with ELF (DIO).
Yeah I was puzzled about the 50th coming out after 52 years. Maybe the purple powers that be work on a different calendar 🤣🤣
Esperando que el contenido del box set llegue a Spotify
Can't wait to hear the new mix and peruse the package, but wasn't Machine Head released 52 years ago?
ESTOY LOCO PARA COMPRARLO DEEP PURPLE ES MI ALMA!!🎸🎸🎸🤟🏻🤟🏻
March 29th for the states
The strange thing is the 5.1 mix comprises just three tracks and one is a b side. Very odd.
This remix will go down as one of the best ever. Dweezil Zappa nailed it!
Damn U purple!
Great review.
Great review
The vocal in this mix is so different, i think their add little bit autotuned in that?
OOooooooohhhh....you're one of those guys...Smoke on the water worshippers I always obnoxiously ran into in school...yeeesh....
A great set for the money,
and sound quality is very important, but …
Smoke on the Water on Made in Japan is far and away there KILLER for the performance.
How good is the performance here?
$79 on Amazon
Deep Purple i love u.
I don't have a Blu-ray just a regular DVD would be fine
If it was £49, I would consider.
I want to have a copy
50th anniversary released a few years too late? Brilliant!
Have we gone back in time?
Must be great if you get it free. Isn't this paid promotion? Dweezil Zappa? Definitely not buying it then!
But of course a postive review does 'promote' an item - it is still considered different from 'product placement' .
the remaster is fine, the DZ remix has a few nice moments but unfortunately is drenched in reverb )-: hoping the live cd' s will be better....
