    The reality is for most professional users. 90+% of the time the computer is basically idle. Most billing hours are spent thinking, reviewing and planning. The time is spent mostly on tasks that do not saturate the cores in any meaningful way for M1 pro/max/ultra That’s why spending so much money on the highest top of the line makes little sense for most people. The m1 ultra may be on paper twice fast as the max., but that doesn’t mean that your productivity is going to double. I find it funny to see people spending $6K+ on machine like thus just to edit basic very simple UA-cam videos and then say they’re so productive because they saved 10 seconds exporting a file.

      For most professional users. As a DIT I need as much processing power in as small a form factor as possible. I'll be transcoding multiple 4K 6.5K camera files, grading apply looks as well as sending multiple feeds to different pieces of kit for playback. On set people want to see the finished results as soon as the cards are pulled from camera. I need to back up cards to three destinations as fast as the cards can go then start the whole, grading and transcoding process. DIT's don't have time to sit back and think - we are constantly doing. I want this Mac Studio.

    I find 120Hz is "nice" but doesn't matter for studio work.
    Some time ago, I upgraded my monitor from 60Hz to 165Hz. It looks really nice how smoothly the windows move and things scroll. But I didn't notice any difference in my work flow (video editing, photo editing). Also, I mostly forget about the refresh differences when I switch back and forth to my 60Hz display at work.
    A high refresh rate is beneficial for gaming or on a tablet for drawing and writing. But for most work on a desktop, it's more a nice feature than a useful one.

      Only case where 120hz on apple products could really help with professional work is on iPads for digital art. Still though, 16-20k for a 5k display with no curved design, mini-led, 120hz, and an average sized screen? I don’t know about that /;

    I like that you tested the M1 Max 32 core GPU version because that’s the one I’m interested in. You also confirmed my suspicion that it’s similar to MBP, but maybe a little faster due to better cooling. One good thing about desktops like Mac mini and Mac Studio is that you can use it with your existing monitors, keyboards, and mouse. I got 2 LG 4K HDR monitors that together cost less than 1 Studio display and even with all the bells and whistles, I don’t see reason to get it. I feel many people will be in similar position as me with existing peripherals and won’t need to add on any cost other than upgrades for base Mac Studio model itself. Even the lowest base model is pretty good OOTB IMO.

      I also put aside the purchasing of the monitor because I do have a Cinema Display 27" 2.5K, I didn't buy the 4K solution because the scaling is not right for a 27" monitor. Either you have the fonts too small and full 4K or you scale 50% but then you have a real estate comparable to 1920x1080. I can't stand the fractional scaling. Too bad.

      yep, the m1 max doesn't have enough buses but the m1 ultra being 2 chips would of course have enough. You could even have more ports honestly lol and it would still handle it, but they decided on this many. Honestly it would've been interesting for there to be 2 headphone jacks on this computer, one in the back for speaker systems, and one in the front for headphones but I guess a lot of speaker systems come with a headphone jack solution anyway

      @HearMeLearn 2 роки тому

      not true, lots of intel and amd APUs can just have a graphics card added in for even more power instead of just driving the display and a few light gpu tasks. RAM might be enough for NOW. You don't know what the needs will be of the future that take more advantage of the hardware, and external storage won't be as fast as PCIe lanes because thunderbolt can only do a few gigabytes a second, whereas PCIe can do like 64GB/s on a 16x gen 4 slot.

    Apple always put too little flash memory in their base model iPhones and Macs. I would recommend buying the base model of the Mac Studio but with 1 or 2 Tb instead of the default none upgradable 0.5 Tb of Flash memory. One additional advantage of buying a larger SSD that I discovered is that the larger Apple SSDs are faster.

    This is the same expansion limitations as a laptop. Both Mac and PC laptops have this limitation. I worked years several at small custom coding/computer retailer in Tennessee. We offered both stock and custom build PCs. As I recall once a customer purchased their PC, they almost never upgraded. They would get external hard drives, maybe a new monitor. Generally four to five years later, they would get a whole new system. Getting a system that you can upgrade yourself isn’t as big a draw as you might think. Of course, that is just my experience, your experience could well be different.

      I’ve found that when upgrading, often the motherboard won’t accept all that more powerful of a CPU. The newer CPUs often needed a different socket. Also, memory types change, hard drive connectors change, expansion card connectors change, external connectors change. So often I’d need to change the motherboard too + CPU + memory + storage + GPU. By then, I’m not saving much vs. buying new.

    Frankly, Apply should have either released the M1 Ultra Studios at far lower price point, given their lack of user-upgradability post purchase, or alternatively it would have been great if Apple took the M1 Ultras and put them in slightly thicker larger than 16" laptop - sure it might have ended at Windows/Linux workstation/gaming laptop sizes, maybe even DTR-like one, but the extra cubature/dimensions would allow the better cooling to be implemented, sides would have enough space to technically get all the ports we've got on the M1 Studio... It could have been named Macbook Ultra or Macbook Studio... It would have made even more sense, given the fact that the compute power on offer or RAM availability would have then rivalled or beat the Windows/Linux side of the market devices, the energy efficiency would be better and power draws would equal or be better than those other market notebooks, all while offering more and more useful orts noone else offers on the notebooks - 10GbE ona laptop would have been a first, 20 core CPU block could only be surpassed by the DTR's desktop CPUs such as Ryzen 3900, 6x USB-C/TB + 2x USB-A would have made it a unique laptop with more general purpose all-encompassing USB standards than any other on the market, the HDMI out would have made it an easy to suggest for external display users, and integrated SD card reader would have made it a far useful tool for anyone processing camera's data. It it all were to be encompassed in a high quality shell, got a good battery life on lighter loads thanks to the efficiency, with good screen, cam, enough space in the device for even better speaker configuration, it would have been an even better option than M1 Max powered Macbook Pros 16"... cause than it would have been a really pro, even ultra, still mobile device. And possibly less people would be put off by the lack of upgradability/replacability of the product as laptops, whether thin 13" chromebooks or thick 17" DTRs, are quite limited in this aspect on average...

I think and design in 3D, so I need a computer capable of running the best BIM software (Vectorworks and/or ArchiCAD rather than the popular Revit). The graphics power ‘on chip’ is plenty and Vectorworks can use the multi-core computing, which many CAD and BIM softwares do not. @@johnkellett7797 many thanks! Yeah I know ArchiCAD is better, but I haven’t learned it yet hahaha, but I will… What’s the difference between ArchiCAD and Vectorworks? I’m planning to learn ArchiCAD, but what does Vectorworks offer that ArchiCAD doesn’t? (I’m not familiar with Vectorworks). Sadly, in Latin America, Revit is more widely used, but I don’t like it (speaking from my only experience with it on a short course I took). I know ArchiCAD was like the pioneer on CAD & BIM software since back in the 80s I think and I’m more confident that this software will continue offering updates and new versions for Mac, unlike AutoCAD that abandoned Mac for several decades. Though actually I’m mostly a Windows user, I prefer the Mac environment and am returning to it with this new Silicon Macs.🙌

      @@arq.adrianasanchez3794 , Vectorworks and ArchiCAD are quite similar and getting more so as both are owned by the same company. The difference being that Vectorworks is far more inclusive with a number of modelling and rendering options etc built in as well as lighting design, landscape design etc. That fact that Revit is more ‘popular’ doesn’t mean it’s better :-)
      Unlike Revit and AutoCAD both ArchiCAD and Vectorworks were written for architects by architects and are derived from software written in Hungary by a group of architects.
