Great lakes of acid and clouds that reeked worse than the blackest puddles in the bottom of a hive city. It had been in the hands of the Tau for 223 years. We were assigned with the Bannockburn 13th, as well as the Cuberhust 117th, on deployment the Tau attacked us in an ambush, destroying much of our armored support. Thus, these two other regiments left, filthy cowards, leaving us to take the city. It took us 35 hours. The Lord general said 20 years at the minimum, if everything went well. Even under the emotionless helm of the Tau helmets, one can most certainly tell that a Kreigsman, missing one of his arms crawling through a ventilation pipe like a tyrannid, most certainly upset him.

I can highly recommend anyone who’s interested in the Kriegers to read “Dead Men Walking” by Steve Lyons. It’s not an easy read, but it’s a really good book and in my opinion it is *the* Death Korps of Krieg book because it makes an deep dive into their lives and their mentality. Just don’t read it if you’re already in a dark place mentally because, like I said, it is not an easy read and it will not help.
Imho the book has it's issues (the numbers are even worse than you'd expect from a bl book) but it really captures the atmosphere of the "new" Krieg. They're way more robotic and soulless than they were back during the siege of Vraks (when they were more humanised). So if you're a fan of the new Krieg it's defenetly a good read.

To be honest, the DKoK are one of the best Imperial Guard Regiments I have ever come across. I mean - executing their own Commissar for cowardice, charging head first into battle with their shovels, the 'oh-you-killed-2-doesn't-matter-here's-20-more' sorta attitude. Honestly I don’t see the issue with a majestic theme for an imperial regiment, let alone the kriegsmen. Sure, the universe is bleak, but the Imperium is majestic, and his armies are grand and strong. Amongst them, the krieg are also designed around this Great War aesthetic that’d make it very fitting. Hey, look at our history of military musics, make it a hundred times more epic, and that’d be about what would fit the krieg or the two soviet rip offs, and others. In the krieg’s case, making it more solemn and heavy, a bit like a mourning chant, would be very appropriate, but you can have that with majesty.

So now, to correct the Verdun misinformation. 1 million shells were dropped on Verdun on the *first* day. The battle lasted just over 200 days and was the longest battle of the first world war. 800 000 men would die in total from both sides combined, and the french would come out victorious after the Germans failed to take anything more than three forts out of the 40 or so the French defended. Of those three forts, all three of them were merely rubble when the Germans finally took them. It was a resounding moral boost for the French army and a decisive turning point in the war.
