Keeps it interesting, dude. Good scenario to work through in X-plane later.

Lost GPS like this over White Sands a few months ago (it was NOTAMed, so expected). Came in handy that my portable ADS-B receives from not just the USA constellation of GPS but multiple others. It stayed perfectly happy while the Garmin went to dead reckoning.

And that's exactly why you don't just want to rely on TSO-compliant GPS receivers. They only receive GPS on one frequency, and have sub-par jamming resistance.

More likely than a failure would be the military jamming nearby for a training exercise. But I guess you would have checked the NOTAMs before the flight, where that would have been mentioned?

I know this is probably a joke, but in case it's not, there are GPS outage NOTAM's almost constantly. If you figure out a way to understand when they're actually going to affect you then please let me know.

@@sleepyhorses6100 It wasn't a joke. There isn't any way to decode if the NOTAMs will actually effect your flight; all you can do is assume that it will and plan accordingly.

@@joebloggs8785 ok well I guess you should assume your GPS is going to fail every single flight. I fly near 1000nm legs every week and there are always GPS NOTAMs listed along my route. Maybe 2% of the time I actually have an issue, yet ATC seems to know exactly when they’ll happen. It is NOT obvious via the NOTAM and attempting to decipher each and every one of them, of which there are probably a dozen, is a waste of time given how sporadic they are.
Here is just one of many along one of the routes I fly. Keep in mind that this is about 75% of the way down on a list of several thousand words worth of NOTAMs, most of which are irrelevant to my flight:
