Before going into the lore behind the Vassago from demonological lore, a fun fact about his design: His design first appeared way back in the Hazbin Hotel pilot among the Overlords when Vaggie was saying the line "Many have speculated what unimaginable forces enabled him to rival our world's most ancient and destructive evils". Speaking of design: The most common depiction of him I've seen is a humanoid riding a crocodile. But since he isn't depicted in the Ars Goetia and the Goetia demons are mostly birds, I think his design in the show makes sense. Speaking of "Ars Goetia": He is listed in both the Liber Officiorum Spirituum and, of course, the Ars Goetia itself: In the Liber, he is named "Usagoo". Here, he appears as an angel who can make women fall in love with you and reveal hidden treasure. He commands only 20 legions in this version. In the Ars Goetia, meanwhile, he is the third spirit and the first of the seven Princes of Hell (Stolas is listed as the 5th btw) said to be of a good nature and the same nature as Agares, the second spirit who is depicted as an old man riding a crocodile. Vassago is said to rule 26 legions of demons and is able to find lost objects as well as tell wizards the past and future. He is said to be the opposing force to the angel Sitael.
@@demonic_myst4503 I'm sorry but I fail to see in which way this is crucial information. Since I already included the part of him being of a good nature, I did not feel the need to include it. After all, if he wasn't a fair businessman, he wouldn't be described as having a good nature, would he?

Not only did this episode give us the official designs of Satan, Leviathan, and Belphegor. It also gave us unique designs for at least 20 of the Ars Goetia, including best bird boy Vassago and Prince Sitri (The leopard with griffin wings behind Vassago).
The fact that lucifer didn’t bother to show up to the trial is so in character for him and it makes me wonder if they will reference this trial in someway in hazbin hotel season 2. Especially since the trial was broadcast to all the rings. Because considering that they said that the pilot episode for helluva boss isn’t canon. We actually have no reference for when helluva boss takes place in comparison to hazbin hotel. So it would be nice to connect the 2 in someway timeline wise.
(Long comment warning) It’s not necessarily corrupt but more just bias. Because the higher up on the power scale you are the more leniency you get when you do something bad. For example if lucifer did something bad he would probably not even face a punishment because he’s at the same level of importance as Satan. So basically if you are a lower class demon you basically don’t get a voice because most of the higher ups look down on you. Corruption would be more along the lines of being able to bribe your way out of punishment or something like that

And so, after being name-dropped since the Pilot, Satan, sometimes called "The Satan", finally makes his on-screen debut. And it did not disappoint in the slightest. Now, there's obviously a LOT one can say about him but I wanna keep this relatively short so I'll focus on the important stuff as well as a few things people may not know about him: 1. Since he's the most common name for the devil, there are countless different depictions and descriptions of him. And while not all depictions are big and red, most I've seen do include claws and horns, like in this show. He is also described as a great red dragon in the Book of Revelation. So alongside Asmodeus, his design in the show is the closest to real life depictions out of all the Sins. 2. His name comes from the Hebrew language and literally means "accuser" or "adversary" (which makes his role as judge in this episode a nice reference). It is also often, though not always, used interchangeably with "Lucifer", "Beelzebub" and "Bael", among many other names. 3. In Judaism, he is originally a servant of god. Though I've heard that in modern times, his relationship to God can differ depending on who you ask. Only in Christianity and Islam, he is considered God's enemy. However, Muslims don't necessarily see him as the cause of all evil like the Christians do (of course, some do, but to my understanding, it's not the widely accepted version). Rather, he is seen as someone who uses what is already there. 4. His arabic name is "Shaitan". It means "devil" or "demon" and comes from the triliteral root š-ț-n which means "astray" or "distant". However, in the Quran, he is called "Iblis". Though I've been told the figure is more of a Satan/Lucifer mix. And finally: 5. In the Middle Ages, Satan was treated more as a joke, a minor nuisance who was constantly outsmarted by Saints and sometimes even just ordinary people. It wasn't until the early modern period where Satan became more powerful and thus more feared by people.
Also, Viv did say that the part where Satan said that he's ruled Hell since before Lucifer fell, he was just making that up. Or at the least, overexaggerating.
Here's a bit of background on the two Sins with no lines: In demonology, Levy, aka Leviathan, is mostly described as a giant sea serpent or another sea monster such as a whale or a giant crocodile. He/She/It (I've literally seen all pronouns being used for Leviathan about the same amount) is sometimes paired up with Behemoth, a giant land monster, and Ziz, a giant air monster. In those depictions, like in this show, Leviathan is usually female (or at least she appears female; we'll have to wait and see for the exact pronouns). Originally considered the embodiment of chaos, she has been the go-to Sin of Envy since the 13th Century (at least for Christians). In the Dictionnaire Infernal, she is also a member of the Order of the Fly, a group of high ranking demons hand-picked by Beelzebub to help him run Hell. Here, she is a he and the Minister of the Office with the positions of Grand Admiral of Hell and Knight of the Fly. Lastly, she is often compared with giant serpents and monsters from other mythologies like Jörmungandr from Norse Mythology, Tiamat from Mesopotamien Mythology or Vrtra from Hinduism. Like with Bee-lzebub, Belphegor, the Sin sleeping next to Bee, is most often portrayed as a male. Belphegor is also known as "Baal-Peor" which comes from the Hebrew "Ba'al-Pe'gor" and means "Lord of the Gap" (which, as a side note, is quite the nice parallel to Beelzebub whose title is „Lord of [the] Fly“). He is usually portrayed as an old man with horns, a beard, long nails and a devil's tail. But honestly, I do like the show's design, too. Originally seducing people by helping them make discoveries and inventions that would make them rich, he is considered the Deadly Sin of Sloth nowadays due to the Binsfeld's Classification of Demons by real life witch hunter Peter Binsfeld (though it goes without saying that the "witches" he hunted weren't actually magical). Also, according to the Dictionnaire Infernal, he is also a member of the Order of the Fly, serving as the ambassador to France. Lastly, he has a book about him by Machiavelli (the guy who wrote the political satire "The Prince") which was adopted into an opera in 1923. Also, in-universe fun fact, as seen in S1E5 of Hazbin Hotel, Belphegor is listed in Charlie’s contact list. So despite the Sins seeming to not have a high opinion of their king (granted, he is an absent king, so it's not exactly a surprise), at least a few seem to be on speaking terms with his hellborn daughter.
@@SilverScribe85in the lesser key of Solomon he is a demon that is known to be of a more benevolent nature and helps people find things about the past and future if summoned. So pretty fitting that he's the only one to actually want a fair trial to figure out what is actually going on.

I wonder if now that he’s lost his power and no longer has access to the stars, if the mastermind theme will be his theme going forward. Since he’s no longer a powerful prince at least.
