The big question is: Can we save our progress during multi hour endurance races, maybe like Gran Turismo 5 when we could save the race when entering the pits. I ask this because I found it too tedious to drive for more than 6 hours.

That is stupid though, you can't do that in real life so why would you try to emulate it. Just do a 6 hour race alone like IRL, or do a 24h race and have a buddy take over the wheel, also like in real life.
You can't save races IRL.

Nicks._. nicks you could always ask but I agree with you on this one before GT 5 had update of suspend during long race's it felt like an never-ending drive. Lets hope they bring this into the game play.

Is getting 1st place in a championship the only way to move up in Tiers?
